genuinely fascinating
The answer feels defensive for nothing but the content is interesting.
the answer is a little defensive, but when you consider that this person has dealt with an entire lifetime of having to educate (often times rude people) about her deafness, I can understand why its like that.
This is one of the most common questions asked of deaf people- especially those of us who are born deaf. It’s an insidious form of anti-deaf ableism because y'all love to pry into the minds of deaf/ HOH people already, but then y'all consider one of the best and most calm responses to this defensive?
The answer isn’t defensive, but hearing people sure are.

I got blocked from liking comments for a few days on Facebook because I was liking so many on this post. Most were along he lines of, “Good. The only way to clean up this paint mess is to remove the whole statue. The blood makes it more accurate, needs more blood. Fit for a murdering rapist. NOBODY SNITCH/THEY’RE MY HERO.”
pls support trans girls and trans women who like traditionally masculine things
no seriously please reblog this ive seen so many posts saying to support trans boys and trans men who like traditionally feminine things and those posts are good!! i love them!!
but i have never in my life seen a post saying to support masculine trans girls and trans women or trans girls and trans women who like traditionally masculine things and its really important to understand that showing support for trans women in any form is just as important as showing support for trans men so please, please reblog this.
support trans women and trans girls. support trans women and trans girls who like traditionally masculine things. trans women and trans girls who like traditionally masculine things are not any less valid than trans women and trans girls who don’t!!
sammiwolfe important to our lives lol XD
Oh oh my god now Morse code actually makes SENSE when you lay it out like that
Awesome!!
This is also nice, if you want to decode morse code quickly.
that avl tree though
That’s not a coincidence! Naturally, it’s less work to transmit shorter sequences of dots and dashes, so we try to use up all the shorter sequences first. Basically, this means that we fill in all the branches at one level of this tree before moving onto the next. The result is a perfectly balanced decoding tree.
The placement of the letters is also far from arbitrary. Here are all the letters in English ordered from most common to least common:
ETAOINSRHLDCUMFPGWYBVKXJQZ
Notice something? The shortest morse code sequences were assigned to the most common letters. This makes the common letters easier to remember, and makes messages as short as possible in the average case.
Numbers are sort of an exception to this. All numerical symbols are encoded with 5 dots and dashes. But there’s a pretty clear pattern to these as well.
1 = .—-
2 = ..—
3 = …–
4 = ….-
5 = …..
6 = -….
7 = –…
8 = —..
9 = —-.
0 = —–
So if the listener hears a series of 5 dots and dashes, they immediately know it’s a number. To decode it, they count the number of dashes. If the dashes came before the dots, the number is 5 + the number of dashes. Otherwise, the number is 5 - the number of dashes.
Morse Code is neat.
New Inktober for 2017!
I was asked a lot if I could make a new list of art prompts for October this year! Since last year was so much fun, I’ve decided to give it another try at making a new list! Hope you enjoy!! (I’ll be adding the other days soon! Just wanted to get it started so you guys knew what to draw for tomorrow lol)
Day 1: (Since this seemed to be a great way to kick it off last year) Draw yourself on Sept. 30th vs. yourself on Oct. 1st!
Day 2: A Netflix original show doing a crossover special with another Netflix original show (Bonus points if it’s a holiday special!)
Day 3: A Disney princess (or any Disney female protagonist) reimagined as a traditional Halloween monster.
Day 4: A traditional Halloween monster in a lovely Disney princess-like gown that matches their aesthetic.
Day 5: Your favorite Fall/Halloween treat reimagined as a Pokemon (bonus points if you give the pokemon stats!)
Day 6: Your OTP in Halloween costumes that are designed to go together.
Day 7: The Marvel/DC Universe characters if they were optional playable characters in Mario Kart.
Day 8: A character from your favorite cartoon/television show/movie and summoning their Patronus.
Day 9: Take a song title that’s not meant to be scary, imagine it to be the title of a new horror movie. Draw the poster art for that new horror movie.
Day 10: Use an old picture of yourself in a previous Halloween costume as a reference, and recreate it as ornately and imaginative as you remember feeling while wearing it!
Day 11: A modern AAA video game (Uncharted, Gears of War, etc.) reimagined as an old 8- or 16-bit video game! [This was a suggestion from Joan!]
Day 12: Your favorite scary movie/television show/video game/anime/whatever… but they’re cats. [This was a suggestion from Talyn haha]
Day 13: A character or characters from one musical that has/have been cast in another musical that’s totally different.
Day 14: What exactly DOES the Monster Mash look like??
Day 15: What characters from different shows would be the BEST zombie-fighting team??
Day 16: There’s a certain ethereal feeling that comes from Fall. Using colors, imagery, and whatever else you may deem necessary, try to depict that emotion.
Day 17: Think of one really good/funny/happy memory from this year or sometime recently that you’d like to illustrate and accompany with explanation. I think we can always use more positive/light stories!
until 1979 homosexuality was classed as an illness in sweden so you could call in sick bc you had the hots for paper boy in the morning
Ellie, I’m disappointed in you, you left out the best part. The reason they took it out in 1979 was because, to protest it, a shitton of people actually did. They’d get calls upon calls upon calls with “I can’t come in today, I’m feeling pretty gay”
but what if a vampire drank the blood of someone who was anemic like would they be seriously grossed out

“maybe we should work on a dietary plan with foods rich in iron and other things for you”
“do you get this involved with all of your meals”
VAMPIREDUDE: did u get the cookbook i orderd 4 u
ME: Oh my god, first of all stop using text speak, you told me you were 278, second how did you know where I LIVED, third yes I got it.
VAMPIREDUDE: heard onions were good 4 blood, eat lots
ME: So you can have a tasty meal? I guess you’d rather I stay away from garlic, huh.
VAMPIREDUDE: UR being v rude I just got u a present!!!
ME: THE COOKBOOK IS CALLED “HOW TO TASTE DELICIOUS,” I AM CALLING THE COPS
The Sun will go down eventually!

As someone with anemia, this pleases me.

During a military campaign, Vlad the Impaler, the basis for Dracula, once pulled his troops out of a major engagement in a valley at dusk so that the sun was in their enemies’ eyes. Once they were over the hill, they set loose a bunch of rabid bats who flew away from the sun (towards the enemy) and attacked them, leading to significant infection in their ranks, and Vlad’s eventual victory. Because of how the bats appeared from where Vlad’s soldiers appeared to be at dusk, myth stated that the soldiers turned into bats at night, which is where the “Dracula can change into a bat” thing came from.
raphael, the renaissance painter, literally fucked himself to death
during the Ottoman Empire, the Sultan Ibrahim I had 280 of his concubines drowned in the ocean after ONE of them slept with another man.
The earths carbon levels fell by 700 million tons because Genghis Khan killed so many people
King James (the one known for revising the Bible) liked to watch women give birth. That’s where the “tradition” of women laying on their backs to give birth comes from.
Previous to that it was common for women to have chairs with holes in them and straw underneath, so they could sit on this special chair and let gravity help with the birthing process.
Spicy foods were thought to increase libido and cause children to masturbate. To prevent kids from touching themselves at night, a man named Kellogg invented the blandest combination of cereals, marketed it at kids, and called it Corn Flakes
At the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War, a small group of Union soldiers had run out of ammo against a large group of the Confederate Army. In a panic, the Union soldiers sprinted at them, screaming, with only bayonets drawn. The entire Confederate Army that was present turned and ran away in fear, not knowing that they had literally no ammunition.
When the Roman Emperor Caligula went to invade Britain he stood on the coast of Gaul with his army and suddenly declared war on Neptune, God of the Sea. He had his men collect sea shells from the shore as “spoils from the Ocean”.
Oh and he appointed his horse to the senate.
During the Austro-Prussian war of 1868, Liechtenstein sent over an army of 80 people, but ended up coming back with 81 people because they befriended a guy on the other side.
People refused to send art and sculptures to be displayed at the Chicago World’s Fair because of Chicago’s history with fire. They had to fireproof the Fine Arts building to get people to agree to loan them their art. A year after the fair closed most of the grounds were destroyed by fire but the Fine Arts building survived. It’s now the Museum of Science and Industry.
The carbon emissions thing from Ghenghis Khan is not the whole story. He also planted trees wherever he conquered land because he liked trees and thought they were important. He conquered enough to make an impact on the global climate.
Radu III, brother of Vlad III( Vlad the Impaler) nearly killed Mehmed II, the future Sultan of the Ottoman’s, after Mehmed invited him up to his chambers. Radu, seemingly unaware that the offer was sexual in nature, was startled when Mehmed embraced and then tried to kiss him. Radu stabbed the prince in the leg, then ran and hid in a tree. They later became lovers, and maintained a relationship for the rest of their lives
Just googled the last one because holy shit that’s magnificent and seemed to good to be true, but not only did it actually happen, but I also learned that radu was known as “radu the beautiful”
fun date idea: stab him in the leg
Albert Einstein was such s hard believer on civil rights during his time that the us government made the cia I watch everything he did. Because they believed he was communist spy from Russia for believing in civil rights.
Roman Emperor Nero fancied himself a gifted composer, and would crucify Christians and set them on fire so that their screams would inspire his musical compositions. When he killed himself, his final words were something along the lines of “the world is losing possibly its greatest musical genius of all time”
Oh Nero you crazy
If you’re a Non-Muslim and you see a Muslim praying in public, could you please not pass in front of them?
Go behind them, but not in front. 👍
Oh, signal boost! I didn’t know this.
Okay, but also: if you see a Muslim praying in public and they have something in front of them, like a purse or a bag or something like that, you can pass in front of them, but pass in front of that object.
it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.
Also, if you did this and didn’t know, please don’t beat yourself up over it. Now you know! Muslims aren’t supposed to pass in front of Muslims praying, either, because prayer is communication with God and you don’t want to break that connection.
Spread culture, respect customs, be good people. Simple as that.
Didn’t know this.

Similarly, if a Jew is saying the Shemonah Esrei prayer (whispered, moving only the mouth, standing facing east with legs together) don’t go in front unless there’s a barrier.
Considering he was written to represent Jewish values, he should probably be Middle Eastern.
I’m so here for black Jewish Superman

What are you doing with your life if you aren’t watching Lin-Manuel Miranda singlehandedly drag Trump to hell on twitter
If you try to jump off a bridge in breath of the wild while a NPC is nearby, he will plead you not to jump.
So, like…real talk. For a few years now I’ve been struggling with depression. Last year, I attempted suicide. Obviously, that failed. I’ve gotten better since then and have (for better or worse) kinda blocked the experience from my mind. So, imagine my reaction when I am playing breath of the wild, possibly my now favorite game in one of my favorite franchises that I have been with since I was a kid, and a random NPC tells me to not throw my life away…it hit pretty close to home.
//^ reblogging again for that comment
ALRIGHT. LISTEN UP.
So recently, I got calls from the phone number, (937) 353-8319. They claim to be a job service, and one of their “employees”, Carrigan, is friends with whoever the call recipient is, and that Carrigan has recommended you for this $15.00/h “job”. I also got a text message from (937) 607-1493, claiming to be Carrigan, and that they need stuff to “win a scholarship”. I do not know anyone by the name of Carrigan and I know very well that this is a very dangerous scam. If you receive a call from a number, and they ask you if you would like a job for $15.00/h, HANG UP IMMEDIATELY. If you accept the “job” offer, and you go in for an interview, they will give you a drugged bottle of water and you will wake up somewhere you don’t want to be. These phone calls & texts are from a human trafficking service, and if you oblige to them, you will be sold to people and you will be raped, no doubt about it. So PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER THESE CALLS OR TEXTS. I have listened to the voicemails, and allowed my dad to do the same, and he learned that anyone offering a $15.00/h “job” is a human trafficker. PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST THIS ALL OVER TUMBLR
Okay, I am reblogging this because it is relevant again. I got another call from a 353 number. Not the exact same number, but I know that it is a trafficker because it’s 353 just like the last one. I also want this to signal boost so PLEASE REBLOG THIS.
