Caper in the Castro is a legendary video game, not because legions of die-hard fans continue to play it, but because it was thought to be lost forever. Now, what is largely considered to be the first LGBTQ-focused video game (it was released in 1989) is on the Internet Archive for anybody to play.

The game is a noir point-and-click that puts the player in the (gum)shoes of a private detective named Tracker McDyke who is, in case you couldn’t guess by the name, a lesbian. McDyke must unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of Tessy LaFemme, a transgender woman, in San Francisco’s Castro district, an historically gay neighbourhood.

OOOOOHhh!

The game was released as charityware – freely, with a strong request to give a donation an AIDS Charity of their choice. I’d like to push towards still following that and donating, if you’re able.

(And you might also want to donate to the Internet Archive, who is hosting it now, while you’re at it – they’re in the middle of a donation drive, and could use your support.)

Y’all. Saw these at Target today. The toys for She-Ra: and the Princesses of Power look fantastic (relative to price point and target age group). I would have loved these as a kid. My niece gonna get spoilt!

We bought the Catra and the She-Ra/Swiftwind combo set. Taking all my self-restraint not to buy all of these for myself.

people need to stop leaving intersex people out of conversations about reproductive justice.

intersex people are routinely sterilized at birth, and the choice of whether or not we want to have children is taken from us before we even can reach an age where we would be ready to make that choice.

intersex people and their families are lied to about surgeries that have no medical benefit, because doctors are so worried about making sure that they uphold the binary system and create people who look “normal” instead of preserving our right to consent to what happens to our bodies.

intersex people are often denied access to fertility treatment, or have many barriers to accessing infertility treatment because it is believed that we will not want to have children, or that we should not want to have children.

yet, intersex issues are rarely, if ever, brought up in the context of reproductive rights, despite the fact that bodily autonomy and reproductive justice is a huge issue for the intersex community.

if you’re fighting for reproductive justice, please consider fighting for our rights to choose as well.

This includes putting a stop to people spouting bullshit that intersex people are all or mostly inherently sterile.

Our variants aren’t what make us sterile in most cases, it’s the fucking doctors.

Little fact about French because I just learned that

The accent circonflexe (^) exists in French words to replace the “s” that no longer exists but used to be there in older French.

For example: fenêtre used to be fenestre

It is still possible to see the “s” at times in family words like “défenestrer”.

Avatar
culmaer

knowing this, « être » becomes much more regular :

  • être  → estre (es, est, sommes, ê[s]tes, sont ; ser-)

some French derivations become clearer :

  • fenêtre   → défenestrer → L. fenestra
  • fête   → festival
  • hôpital → hospitaliser (E. hospital, ise)
  • intérêt  → intéressant (E. interest, -ing)
  • ancêtre  → ancestral (E. ancestor, -ral)
  • arrêt    → arrestation
  • épître  → épistolaire (E. epistle)

some English cognates become more obvious :

  • hôtel  → hostel (E. ‘hotel’ borrowed from French)
  • forêt  → forest (tipp to remember ^ goes on the ‹e›)
  • bête  → beast
  • côte  → coast
  • honnête → honest
  • pâte, pâté → pasta, paste
  • quête   → quest
  • enquête  → inquest
  • tempête  → tempest
  • vêtements → vestments (ie. clothes)
  • baptême → baptism

sometimes, the acute replaces the circumfex for phonetic reasons :

  • ḗcole   → escole → L. schola (E. school)
  • ḗtranger   → estrangier (E. stranger)
  • ḗtudier   → estudier (E. study)
  • dḗgoûtant → desgoustant (E. disgusting)
  • dḗbarquer → desembarquer (E. disembark)
  • rḗpondre  → respondre (E. respond)
  • rḗpublique → L. res publica

Also, where « c → ch » (eg. cantare→ chanter) :

  • château → castel (E. castle)
  • pêcher → L. piscare

and « w → gu » (eg. war→ guerre ; warden→ guardian) :

  • guêpe → E. wasp ! (this is my n° 1 favourite cognate)

bonus etymologies :

  • tête   → L. testa
  • fantôme  → L. phantasma (E. ‘phantom’ borrowed from French)
  • Pâques  → Gk. pásxa → Am. pésaḫ (E. Paschal)

Also just be aware that the circumflex has some other uses too, like distinguishing « sur — sûr » or « dû » and the vowel quality in « âge »

Where was this post when I was doing A-Level French! This is actually a really interesting language change called “syncope” (the loss of a medial segment within a word) and what makes it even more interesting to me is that not only was the -s- dropped post vocalically and largely before voiceless stops, but that the circumflex was (unnecessarily but coolly) adopted as an orthographic marker of the lost -s-. Even more interesting is that syncope usually occurs in vowels. I love this.

Which would you rather lose? - United States

This is a really profound question in the context of American politics, so I wish there was a better data source on it than OKCupid

Avatar

So this is really interesting, because the people who would rather lose the right to vote could be coming from polar opposite ends of the political spectrum.

They could be hard core, 2A, THEY’RE TAKING OUR GUNS conservatives

OR

They could be hard core anarchists of the “voting doesn’t do shit in our current system, we need a Revolution™” type, esp. because many of them are okay with guns in that they feel the Revolution will require violence.

And then there’s Florida and Kansas. ;)

Of course, we can probably make educated guesses per state, but it’s still interesting.

WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE NO POSTS ON THE WHOLE COPPA AND YOUTUBE SITUATION

Watch this video to understand what’s whappening, but as a general TLDR, if The Children’s online privacy protection act is inforced on Youtube, youtube content as we know it will change forever.

If you don’t have time to watch the video let me summarize it (and other videos on the topic) for you

One of the things COPPA prohibits is the use of personalized ads (Ads based on your location, age, sex, gender, interests, basically all the data that is collected through use of the internet) for children under the age of 13. For this, Youtube was fined and now they’re making changes to the way the platform works.

One of these changes is making creators mark their content as “Meant for kids” or not. However there are a wide range of items that, on youtube’s eyes, classifies as children media.

So basically if your video contains something that falls under any of these categories, even if its just one, and a minor thing, youtube can flag it as kids video and apply the new restrictions to this video or even your channel as a whole. And if youtube’s automated system finds any of these things in a video NOT catered for children, it can penalize you both by applying these restrictions anyways, striking you, or fining you for breaking the law

This is a snippet of a complaint made to be submitted to COPPAS’ feedback page, since they saw how problematic this act and laws can be. The whole complaint was written by a mexican youtube channel called Alfrely, and it reads:

YouTube viewers and creators petition the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to clarify and reconsider the new Children’s Online Privacy Protection (COPPA Rule) regulations on YouTube creators. Shutting off personalized ads on creators’ content will cause more harm than good, especially for children. Quality family-friendly content will shrink, while more mature content will grow — yet kids will still be watching.   The FTC should not expand COPPA regulations for content creators. Broadening the definition of “child-directed” to include “child-attractive” would force many more creators to turn off personalized ads. As a result, even more quality content will dry up, and more mature and extreme content will fill the platform. The free YouTube Kids app is a better solution than regulation targeting family-friendly creators. YouTube Kids removes privacy concerns around personalized ads. Parents buy devices and allow their children to watch YouTube Main. Many parents prefer to use YouTube Main because it has more features and less barriers. Creators should not be punished when parents choose not to use YouTube Kids. COPPA is about putting parents in control of protecting their children’s personal information online. The FTC should not use COPPA to remove parents from the process in regulating content and online advertising. While large corporations will survive these changes, small business creators face terminating employees, changing their business model, or shutting down production altogether. These regulations will particularly hurt young underserved audiences who participate in YouTube communities on topics like special needs, faith, and minority groups. Limiting quality free content for kids expands the digital divide. Turning off personalized ads on kids’ content also encourages increased product placement and brand deals within kids’ content. Creators face COPPA fines up to $42,530 per video, yet the regulation and definition of “child-directed” is vague. The FTC needs to provide creators with enforcement clarity.  We ask the FTC to: 1. Provide an enforcement statement for creators 2. Clarify the definition of “child-directed,” and not expand it to cover “child-attractive” content  3. Delay enforcement against creators until the FTC concludes its review of COPPA 4. Allow parents to use YouTube Kids or YouTube Main, without forcing creators to turn off personalized ads when parents choose to use YouTube Main

Now onto another point:

The woman from the video replies

“We will start limiting the data we collect from ‘Made for kids content’ to comply with the law.”

The changes that will be applied to these videos are:

  • Comments
  • Personalized ads
  • Info cards
  • End screens
  • Stories
  • Community tab
  • Notification bell
  • Ability to “Save to watch later” or add to playlists, just to name the ones listed.

You basically get stripped of everything that makes youtube, youtube.

This change basically encourages content creators that live off the platform to create content that DOESN’T cater to children, creating more mature content that is already frowned upon on youtube and by advertisers, and will inevitaly make kids continue to consume media that is not for them

Not to mention that things like cartoons and videogames will be among the things that people won’t talk about.

Big corporations will always find a way to make this work, and the people who depend on youtube for a living may also find a way to make this work, but at the end of the day, it will ruin the careers and possibly the lives of many many creators, maybe even creators that you enjoy.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS. THE MORE PEOPLE SUBMITTING FEEDBACK TO THE FTC, THE MORE CHANCES TO SAVE THIS WE HAVE. DON’T SLEEP ON THIS.

I’m not good at making any posts like these so I may be forgetting things or saying something wrong so please reblog and correct me or add to what I’m saying. Spread the word.

And if their algorithm decides your video is Made For Kids there will be zero appeal. None.

Their algorithm can decide to take away your comments section permanently with no recourse to a human. Because machine learning is now perfect and makes zero mistakes, ever. </sarc>

And their recommendation if unsure is to consult a lawyer, because everyone can afford one of those.

And you have to go through every video you have ever posted to determine if it meets these vague guidelines. If the FTC decides you to fine you, the minimum is $42,000 per video.

So, what can you do?

Go here. Go here right now and tell the FTC that this will only result in less kid-friendly programming available on YouTube. Spam the heck out of them with comments. I’ll do it myself later because I have a book to edit.

oh my god i’m absolutely terrified right now, i’ve used youtube to post memes i’ve made, small videos where i’ve talked before, my animation portfolio, there’s things i’ve put up on my channel and now i have to consider deleting all of it to not get fined on the slightest off chance my stuff gets marked as for children anyhow just holy shit oh my god this is NOT what i wanted to deal with at all, i can’t deal with a 42k fine, i can barely hold my mental health together as is. I’ve unlisted all my videos and deleted all my meme videos just in case, there’s still some content left but i might just delete that content too, i can’t deal with this.

this shit could absolutely ruin the lives of people who just use youtube to shitpost, for video archiving or even use it for animation reels on the offchance their stuff gets flagged as kid content by a bot (if i was even a halfway decent cartoonist i’d be shitting myself because IMAGINE the similarities to kids cartoons that bots might decide resemble kids stuff).

Okay. Breathe.

First of all, you will not be fined if your content is flagged by the bot. That content will, though, be kinda nerfed.

The algorithm is supposed to protect people from being fined. It’s a lousy way to do it because no AI is ready to run without human supervision. But no, a bot won’t fine you.

I agree this is bad, but you are not in imminent danger of being fined into bankruptcy. So don’t delete your stuff, especially not your portfolio. If you have anything that would obviously appeal to a five year old, flag it yourself. That’s your best protection and unlike the bot flagging you can be undone later.

Also, this probably won’t actually stand up in the long run. The standard of “child attracting” is vague enough to get First Amendment challenges (Yes, the FA doesn’t apply to YouTube per se, but it does apply to the FTC, and they’re the ones setting stupidly vague standards).

Relax. Post a comment on the FTC’s site, a calm one. If you can work it in, explain that having to work out which of your videos this applies to is an “undue burden.” That’s lawyer-speak for “Something you can’t be reasonably expected to do.”

The more bitching, the more chance there is that they’ll realize the effect this is having and think things through a bit more. They have to pay attention to public comments.

Doll Youtube is in chaos and uproar right now. There are artists who make their whole living off of selling custom dolls and youtube ad revenue who are gonna suffer because of this. I signed a couple petitions today. You should prolly do the same.

not to start a hierarchy of "bullying victims who are valid" especially since its horrible to have your interests made fun of, but some of us were bullied for things completely beyond our control like race, religion, class, etc...like im sorry you got called a weirdo for listening to slipknot but i got called slurs

holy shit look at the notes and gather the vibes before supporting this shit

you absolutely ARE promoting a hierarchy. everyone in the notes claiming nobody gets bullied for their interests should be ashamed of themselves. ill take being called slurs again over being shamed out of my interests, anyday.

OP made this post after reblogging THIS:

LOOK AT THIS SHIT!!!! this sites attitude towards bullying is VILE.

not really your exact thing but i feel a compulsion to tag you to skim this and the notes. this is the hellsite we live in huh

also

HAH

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

Where is the next toilet so I can throw up?

(Also, as an autistic woman, let me just laugh forever.)

I got bullied once because I was tiying my shoelaces. This is not a shitpost. I literally got bullied and was made fun of by my personal bully bc i was tiying my shoelaces. This site can fuck right off lmao.

Why are all these people desperate to be bullies?

I was bullied for not being a rich kid who could afford fancy clothes and new shoes each weekend. I was bullied for being fat. I was bullied because I wore glasses. I was bullied for my fucking surname. I was bullied because I was shy.

None of these things could have been changed. I could not help being bullied. And I still literally want to choke with my own hands anyone trying to even imply that bullying someone over their interests is “not as bad”. Fuck you. Fuck you and fuck your mother and fuck your siblings and everything you hold dear. I don’t care that you think the reasons you were bullied are somehow worse than someone else’s. ALL ABUSE IS BAD. AND BULLYING IS LITERALLY ABUSE. HENCE, ALL BULLYING IS BAD.

Oh, and one more thing: fuck you. Even if I had been bullied for something I could change and was willing to change and I actually changed it, they would’ve bullied me anyway. Because bullying is not about reasons, there never is an actual motive behind bullying. It’s just a matter of the powerful being against the powerless. That’s literally all it is. Whether you’re being bullied because you’re gay or black or a nerd or a furry or a fujoshi or whatever, all bullying is bullying and it’s all bad EXACTLY THE SAME. You don’t get a fucking medal for being gay and a victim of bullying. You don’t deserve more sympathy than literally anyone else. All victims of abuse are victims, all abuse hurts victims, and you fucks need to grow up and learn that solidarity is the actual answer here, not creating more division. You fucking cunts.

It's odd to be outside fandom dynamics and witness all this stuff on my dash. It is an undisputable fact that Adam Driver is a better actor than Daisy and John; just like McGregor was better than Christensen and Portman (at the time, she did grow as an actress which might come to happen to Daisy). But mostly it's really puzzling to see people lose it like this, it's so divorced from reality.

Nah, deep down they know Adam Driver is a different league and are pressed about it.

I don’t agree with your opinions about the quality of the ST actors’ acting, but I still find it unacceptable how antis go from zero to harassment the second something upsets them. “A stranger dissed my fave, better send death threats!”

It’s not even harassment lol they’re just kids playing with the anon mode
