Xikers Full Storyline Explained - Part 1

Name Explanation

  • Xikers is a name made up of "X" which represents coordinates and "hikers" which refers to travelers (as an added bonus, the "X" could also be seen as a roman numeral as the group is made up of 10 members)
  • To quote the article here in which this was announced, it is meant to stand for 'boys who travel through time and space in search of coordinates'

Tricky House

  • Korean name: Goblin's House
  • Goblins are depicted in various ways, depending on the folklore's country of origin, but in regards to this MV, we seem to be looking at mischievous spirits with magical abilities, including possession and shapeshifting
  • We can also shift gears to Korean mythology in which Dokkaebi (the Korean version of goblins) are depicted as either nature deities or spirits who are known to use their supernatural powers to interact with humans - either by playing tricks or them or helping them, depending on the nature of the story
  • we're kicking off in a very US-style subway covered in graffiti and the only two passengers are a bored/annoyed looking business man in a suit and our current main boy Jinsik who gets up to place his headphones over the business man's ears - let the possession begin!
  • from here on out, the business man and us will be the only one capable of seeing the Xikers members/goblins, a possession that this song will guide us through
  • we're getting to see the first sign of Xikers' powers when Jinsik disappears into the pitch black void behind the subway door, only for Junmin to jump out a second after - an impossibly fast switch to pull off if they were bound by the laws of physics
  • next, we get to see Junmin summon some of his fellow members in a sweeping motion
  • their spirit forms glow white and blue and they move quickly, giving them almost teleportation-like abilities
  • the accompanying lyrics are "Open your eyes and look around / Pick what’s real" which reaffirms that this is all happening in the business man's head as a result of the possession
  • the remaining members pop up, performing for him as the subway interior moves around him (a really cool practical effect, might I add - this MV is stunning)
  • after Yechan's dope rap, the possessed man looks increasingly ill and literally purges the spirits out of his body, which leads to a sequence of some of the sickest shots I've ever seen in an MV
  • the lighting dims as it switches from a cold white to what's either blue or black light
  • the subway car warps and expands to the width of a small stage, allowing all ten members to perform in formation surrounded by spirit wisps and with the inner workings of a machine overhead
  • from here, we move into a world reminiscent of Tron - neon grid floor in a black void, the spirits orbs still flying around while Hunter seems to be having the time of his life performing as a goblin (he did a fantastic job, 20/10 charisma)
  • as we move on to the next verse, the business man is allowed to exit the subway at the next stop, visibly disoriented and not in control of his own actions
  • he quickly ends up in an empty subway station hallway, his butt parked in an empty shopping card, limp like a ragdoll, eyes vacant
  • we once again get to see the harsh contrast between what him an us are seeing vs what is actually happening: 10 teens bouncing and playing around vs him rolling down an empty corridor
  • with the evident goal of having some fun, they make their way to an arcade where all of them get to play around by spending this guy's money
  • throughout, Minjae's rap, as well as the camera work and editing continue to reinforce what's going on - it's magic, it's both real and supernatural and what we're seeing is not what everyone else is seeing but that makes it no less real
  • as Minjae's voice echoes and fades, we find our business man in an empty parking garage, covered and surrounded by the spoils of the excursion to the Arcade
  • he's facing four human sized plushies who are quick to join him in a dance performance as the light begins to flicker - this hints at the shapeshifting abilities I previously mentioned, especially as we're cutting back and forth between these five and five of Xikers' members
  • huge shout out to the actor playing this business man - he's literally moving like a puppet having his strings pulled and his face is fully expressionless and vacant during his entire performance
  • with the arcade now checked off the list, we're now moving on to an amusement park that had clearly been shut down for the night
  • Xikers are performing in the foreground while the business man is slumped over on a carousel horse in the back
  • the lyrics under this and the following scene have now begun to hint at a motive: they're trying to help this man
  • they likely sensed how he was feeling earlier in the subway: bored, annoyed, fed up - he wasn't enjoying his life and they believe that him letting lose by spending his money on having fun is the way to go
  • him smashing the ATM also marks the point in the MV where the man's expression shifts from vacant to aggressive - he's now riding the wave of possession, his emotions are running wild and he's going along with it instead of fighting it
  • might I suggest he's even liking it
  • quick pause to acknowledge the camera work hightlighting this sick-ass move in the choreo (the first time I saw this choreo was 6 months ago during this show they did in collaboration with Mobidic and I'm still in awe every time I see it)
  • time for a psychedelic descent into madness as they sing about a strange and beautiful Tricky House
  • a vacant parking lot at night, only a bright red Ferrari parked in the center; the business man gets in as the lyrics say...
  • the scene explodes - the members are performing in the center while the Ferrari does doughnuts around them; blue and green smoke fills up the air around them and like a tornado, it carries debris with it
  • the debris is largely made up of the money from the ATM machine but there are also some small pieces of cloth and, unlike the money bills, they seem to move independently of the wind, almost like little ghosts
  • while not covered in the subtitles of the MV, we all know there's a section in the lyrics after this where the word "shanty" is repeated as Yechan takes center stage
  • the word "shanty" can refer to both a "a small crudely built dwelling or shelter usually of wood" (the Tricky House) or "a song that sailors sang in the past while they were working on a ship" (the chanting nature of this section of the song)
  • we end on the business man lying in the vacant parking lot, no car in sight but a circle of brooms around him (1 for each of the 10 members) and his briefcase by his side
  • to explain this shot, we can once again turn to Korean folklore in which Dokkaebi are created by the spiritual possession of an inanimate object like, for example, brooms
