Something that I think Steven Universe did that was really funny and underappreciated was titling their lighter filler episodes like "Mega-Diamonds: Shit Gets Real" and then their plot heavy episodes like "Lion Goes to the Beach :)"

Oh people had countdowns to the dramatically titled episodes specifically and it was wrong every time. "Oh maybe this time it'll be heavy and plot relevant for real" they'd say, and they'd be treated to a cute no-stakes episode about getting pizza. Meanwhile some episode titled some shit like "Barnyard Hijinks" that people wrote off as skippable would have a major plot twist reveal.

The people who are still mad about this add humor value to this bit the showrunners pulled.

disney channel did not debut its first sapphic couple between two main characters in a children’s cartoon.

dana terrace did.

cartoon network did not give us the first wlw wedding in a children’s animated tv show.

rebecca sugar did.

cartoon network didn’t make bubbline canon.

adam muto did.

nickelodeon isn’t responsible for korrasami, it’s first ever wlw couple.

bryan konietzko and michael dante dimartino are.

do not let these corporations take credit for something that LGBTQ+ creators fought and took risks to get where they got. especially when said corporations made these people fight tooth and nail and take the risk of their shows being canceled altogether.

dana terrace, rebecca sugar, adam muto, bryan konietzko, michael dante dimartino, and every other creator that fought for then representation we deserve. thank you. your efforts are not unappreciated.

Steven Universe: Eh, I don't really feel like saying "girlfriend" or "wife". Maybe they're together. They have a special connection...

(gets violently shoved aside)

The Loud House/Craig of the Creek/The Owl House: Pfft, amateur. "My GIRLFRIEND Sam and I..." "I'm texting my GIRLFRIEND, mind your business." "Luz's new GF showed her..."

Can we not do this thing? Do you realize that Rebecca had to fight for what we got with Rupphire and literally risked her job? and Pearl and Rose. Like, there is no need to knock other shows down because of Lumity.

These kids today, I tell you what. In my day you had to bury your girlfriends under subtext and then end the series when the truth was revealed.

Risked her job, hell, it's an open secret now that the Rupphire wedding (which, may I remind folks, was the first queer wedding in a kids' cartoon, which is a BIG DEAL) is why everything about the rest of the series felt rushed. They had to scramble to tell the rest of the story because they took a gamble and the network retaliated by shortening their production time.

Rebecca Sugar and the crewniverse risked the entire show getting flat-out cancelled in order to show that wedding, only for people to say it "wasn't progressive enough" and was "giving in to stereotypes" to put Ruby in a wedding dress. Never mind that Ruby kept getting dubbed over as a guy in localization, Sapphire was unmistakably feminine in every version, and putting Ruby in the dress was a flagrant way to say, "fuck you, you can't pretend this is a straight couple; this is a queer couple and a queer wedding."

Dana Terrace has said that The Owl House only exists with its intended queerness because of what Rebecca Sugar and her team accomplished with Steven Universe. Hell, there are multiple members of the Steven Universe team who went on to work on the other shows mentioned in the OP--Steven Sugar, for example, who is Rebecca Sugar's brother and inspiration for SU in the first place (as well a background artist on the show), is currently an artist on The Owl House. There are people who got their start on Steven Universe who now only have the opportunity to tell more queer stories because of Steven Universe's success.

I'm not even 30 years old yet and I'm still old enough to remember when being gay was fully illegal in the United States. Not gay marriage, but literally just BEING GAY. It wasn't that long ago, and the fact that today in 2021 I can turn on the TV and watch gay cartoons intended for children? I never thought I'd see it. Fucking ever.

So let's stop pitting queer creators and media against each other, shall we?

last year it was like "catradora is the best cartoon wlw representation ever, rupphire is now obsolete" and today it's all "lumity is the best cartoon wlw representation ever, catradora is now obsolete" like have you guys considered that representation doesn't work like this, at all

it's insane that this is even a common discussion point now, when back in 2014 the korra/asami handholding scene made the fandom go nuclear. and i have to keep reminding myself that 2014 was seven whole years ago (nearly a decade!)

idk maybe instead of treating gay representation like an arms race, consider being normal instead! love and light

My love letter to the queer silver lining of 2020

A lot of revolutionary, unprecedented things happened in 2020 — that... goes without saying

But among all the chaos, one thing I can be grateful for was the surge of queer representation in western animation

I feel lucky to be alive in this time of change, and I’m also excited for the younger generation who gets to grow up with these explicitly queer shows

It gives me hope that this kind of representation will make it easier for them to figure things out :’)

Here’s to a safe, happy, and loving 2021, and here’s to being seen!! ❤️🌟

Sorry for the long ass wait, yall. Sorry that this ended kinda rushed as well. I guess it's obvious that I lost motivation to write this… Frankly, I honestly believe this'll be the last fanfic I'll write for lis! Trust me, I still love the game, I love Max and Chloe and Kate and Rachel! I started writing when I was 15 and I'm 21 now, yall. This is probably the last fanfic I'll write in a long while. Anyway, I hope yall still enjoy, if yall are still reading, that is. Thank you.
