Audiobooks

So I have been a strictly physical book type of gal since forever. I don’t like ebooks and I’ve always just thought my mind would wander with audiobooks. However, since I started driving over a year ago the amount that I read has gone down A LOT. I think this is because I mainly used to read on my bus journeys and they were like 1 hr + each way. I spend so much time driving I thought why not just give audiobooks a try.

The first ever audiobook I have chosen to listen too is Ice Massacre by Tiana Warner. I have heard so many great things about this book from lots of people on here so this is my chance to read (listen ?) to it and see what all the fuss is about!

Have you read or listened to it? Let me know what you think. I can’t wait to start it the next time I drive to work!

So many people don’t understand us, Don’t know how you have my trust. I don’t care what they think Because I know you’d never let me sink. We keep growing ever stronger, So let’s hold on a little longer. I think we could do big things together. Hell, I believe we’ll last forever. We just have to keep fighting; I trust that we’ll do the right thing. As long as we’ve got each other, I know we won’t need another. You’ve helped me find my strength, And now I know I won’t break. Everything always leads me back to you. I’ll never again let you vanish into the blue Because I have fallen in love with you.

AVALON ARCHIVE SERIES REVIEW: Mermaids of Eriana Kwai

Mermaids of Eriana Kwai trilogy by Tiana Warner [Ice Massacre, Ice Crypt, Ice Kingdom]

Reminds Me Of: Deadliest Catch meets Lord of the Flies, with killer mermaids added to the mix

Quick and Dirty Summary: The people of a Pacific Northwest island send a party of teenage girls out on an annual mermaid hunt. One girl’s childhood friendship with a mermaid complicates matters.

Come for: the killer mermaids

Stay for: the inter-species lesbian romance! And kaiju!

Bonus Points: For solving the inter-species romance problem!

Diverse Characters: The protagonist and most of the characters are from a fictional Pacific Northwest native tribe. Protagonist and her Love Interest are lesbians.

Great White North: The author is Canadian, so expect some Canadian spellings and slang.

Foreign Language Fun: Have fun with the fantasy conlang, which shares visual similarities to Haida, but not much else. There’s also some Spanish, but you won’t need to bust out Google Translate to understand it.

Ooh, Navy SEALS! Um, there’s Navy SEALS in this series. They fight Killer Mermaids. Things don’t turn out well for them.

Did I Like It: I was pleasantly surprised by the first book – it was basically “almost everything goes wrong when teenagers are tasked with a life-or-death mission.” Even the teenage drama was put to good effect! And the slow build with the Protagonist’s relationship with her Love Interest was handled well. The second book was a step down, mostly because of the ridiculous resolution of a Fetch Quest (check the tags for my rant). Unfortunately, the third book is rather dull until the last quarter, where all the action takes place. The lack of appearances by supporting characters from the previous installments doesn’t help.

Recommended: Definitely read the first book. Only track down the rest of the series if you’re invested in the inter-species romance.

Content Warnings: For infanticide, graphic violence, and abuse. Also, don’t get attached to any named characters! There’s a good chance they’ll probably die.

books read in 2018: ice massacre by tiana warner
“Mee, we’re on opposite sides of a war. You’re asking me to surrender.”
“It’s not about the war. I’m asking you to save your own life!”
But I knew I was wrong as I said it. It was about the war. Everything was about the war. Her life and mine, her culture and mine, were dedicated to it. She reached out and locked my hand in her icy fingers. “Let’s not talk about this.”
I held her gaze, breathing hard to push down the bubble of panic. Lysi pressed her palm against mine and stretched her fingers skyward. I did the same, feeling our hands align perfectly - brown skin against white.

Anonymous asked:

I really like your writing in Mermaids, it's just so easy to read and get into it. I read everything really fast because that's how captivating the story is. I was wondering: what was one of the first scenes you had in your head? What about the names and the characters appearances? Did you change anything major in the fina version compared to the og draft? I miss them. Excited to see your next works.

Thank you! The first scene that came to mind, and which I wrote in a frenzy, was the first battle between the warriors and mermaids. I imagined the beautiful mermaid scaling the ship, her transition into a demon, and the ensuing bloodbath as these battle-trained warriors and mermaids fought to the death. To this day, it was one of the most fun writing sessions I’ve ever had. I was listening to Pound the Alarm by Nicki Minaj. When I revised the scene and wrote the other battles, I kept playing that song again to recapture the energy I had. (Now that song has been played over 400 times in my iTunes library sooo… thanks, Nicki Minaj, for the inspiration?)

I also had the last line in my head since the start. :)

Many things changed between the final version and the original! While I was brainstorming, I had Lysi’s name in my head as some form of “Sirena”, until I eye-rolled at myself for choosing literally the most basic of all basic mermaid names. I also wrote her father a lot meaner, until my sister read the first draft and told me to tone him back because he obviously loves his daughter and wants what’s best for her. First drafts always suck, so I know there are lots of changes I’m failing to remember, but those two stand out in my memory.
