Some advice for dressmakers:

1. Pockets are a thing. 2. Breasts are a thing.

Leave room in your design for both.

Yep, this is a real problem. From a design stand point it saves fabric and time since you don’t have to add any darts or pockets, and they go with the premise that a flat square shape should fit everyone without having to make much changes to the pattern (except to make it bigger or smaller). This whole one-size-fits-all mentality in fashion is so flawed, and actually impractical, it really annoys me how teachers let it slide in college and how the apparel industry continues to spew it year after year.

As someone who has breasts (DDD-H depending on what manufacturer I’m talking to) and loves pockets, let me wholeheartedly recommend eshakti.com. I started buying dresses from them in November and I love them. They will customize necklines, hemlines, etc., for a $9.95 flat fee, they will customize to your measurements if you don’t fit a standard size, and I’ve really enjoyed all my dresses from them. Most of their dresses come in sizes from XS to 6XL Feel free to message or send me an ask if you have specific questions!

UHM EXCUSE ME I JUST CHECKED THEM OUT AND??????

THEIR

DRESSES

ARE

AMAZING??? AND THIS IS JUST THE DRESSES????

THEY HAVE MODEST OPTIONS!!

@ ladies of Catholic Tumblr, hijab-wearing gals, sensitive-skinned or heavily-scarred individuals, or anyone who feels more comfortable with more coverage – every dress I looked at had hemline options. Be no longer confined by the drudgery of unnecessary-leggings-under-cute-skirt-that’s-just-a-LITTLE-too-short! (Note: not all of them had options to cover all the way to ankles and wrists, but all the ones I saw had options that AT LEAST: went to the knee, covered the shoulders*, and covered cleavage.)

{Also bears mentioning that a lot of these look like they’d be cute layering pieces. So even if you have to do a little mix-and-match to get full collarbone-to-wrist-to-ankle coverage, you can make it look like a fashion choice instead of several pieces of awkward-fitting clothing duct taped together under a trench coat.}

A lot of them also had options for different neckline shapes – which is great if you’re like me and you find that certain necklines are really unflattering, or are majorly in love with a specific neckline that’s usually hard to find (ahem, Queen Anne & non-sleeveless-sweetheart)

I haven’t ordered from them yet, so I can’t speak for quality, but just scrolling through it looks amazing. Will definitely hit them up next time I need to stock up on work or dressy clothes.

[[*except one very angular dress that was structured in such a way that it wouldn’t look right with sleeves – basically anything that looks like it COULD plausibly be cut longer without compromising the dress’s most basic silhouette/look/shape, you can get cut longer]]

SIGNAL BOOST!!!!!!

Reblogging for that post, as well as to say that the quality is unfailingly excellent.

eshakti is life-giving, I have a few dresses from them and they are all favorites - they can be a bit pricey but are so, so, so, so worth it, they are well made and will last forever if well cared for.

Trans women, if you want to find a dress and you don’t fit in the sizes that are usually carried, you can put in your custom measurements!

how I sleep at night knowing my daughter is in a prison of my own design because I turned her into a murderer, my son is abandoned on a notorious garbage realm, and my other son is having an identity crisis because they are from a race I taught them from a young age to hate:

me when i’m in a food coma after eating one 2 many chicken fajitas from chili’s

Anthony Hopkins after eating too many chicken fajitas after Tom brings him to Chili’s

he looks like he was photoshopped into a bowl of boiling soup

idk if anyone will find this useful, but this is how i go about planning my stories. i mostly write fantasy, so that’s what this is most applicable to. but it could work with other genres too.

so there’s three major components to a story: the characters, the plot, and the world. creating them individually is the easy part, but they all connect and affect each other in different ways. (like you can’t have a character who loves peaches and eats them every day if they live a peasant in a region that doesn’t grow peaches, for example.)

so i created a cheat sheet to help connect all three components together.

1) the world creates the characters.

this is related to the peach example above. the characters should be a direct result of the environment they grew up in and the environment they currently live in.

2) the characters are limited by the world.

also related to the peaches. characters can’t do anything outside of what the rules of their surroundings and universe allow, such as eating peaches when they’re not available. this also applies for magic users. they can’t have unlimited magic, so keep in mind what you want out of both the characters and the world when creating magic systems.

3) the characters carry the plot.

we’ve all heard it before: “bad characters can’t carry a good plot. good characters can carry a bad plot.” but we all like a good plot anyway. try to make sure you’re not giving your characters too heavy or too light of a plot to carry.

4) the plot pushes the characters.

if nothing in the plot happens, your characters will remain static forever. if you struggle with plots, try starting with what character development you want to happen, then go from there.

5) the plot depends on the world.

you can’t overthrow the evil government if there isn’t one. think of what your world needs most and what your plot is centered around, and fit those two together.

6) the world is changed by the plot.

even if your plot is centered around something most of your world would call “insignificant”, the world will still experience some change from the plot. either the evil government will be gone, or maybe that one teacher is now way more careful about keeping an eye on the test key. either way, the world will be different from now on.

final note: usually people will be able to write one or two of the components with ease, but don’t know where to go from there. i personally can’t write plots, but thinking this way has really helped me actually make a story out of the world and characters because i looked at what i needed from what i had. i really hope this can help you too! happy writing!

tl;dr this is a cheat sheet to help anyone who struggles with writing one or two of what i consider the three major components to a story.

art tips post

for all the artist following me

  • Have two sketchbooks: One for finished and high-quality art (stuff made with Prismacolor or Copic if you use that or art for your portfolio) and the other sketchbook for more messy doodles. This way you have a place to try new things and mess up as much as you need. When I only had one sketchbook I was scared to draw in it because I didn't want to mess it up
  • Do studies. I cant tell you how much I've improved just by doing studies of shoes, hands, noses, and all that. This works for when you have art block too since you’re not really making stuff up and just learning how real things work.
  • Learn from others. I’ve never taken a real art class because 1. I can’t afford it and 2. there’s no good art classes/programs at my school. I’ve been following several artists and learning from them over the years and they’ve helped me tremendously. Just please do not steal art because that is never okay.
  • Break down concepts. If you notice there’s something wrong with your piece then figure out why. You can’t get better if you leave mistakes and don't try to understand whats going on. If the color is weird figure out if the values look right or maybe its the saturation of the color.
  • Watch youtube tutorials. Here are some youtubers I think are pretty good art teaching all things art: Draw with Jazza |  DrawingWiffWafflesProko |  Baylee Jae
  • Have an inspiration folder/blog. Sometimes you just need a collection of starry nights or a misty forest or even a French bakery. All of those things can help you get inspired to draw. It could even be completely unrelated to what you plan to draw.
  • There are no dumb ideas in the creative process. If you want to draw a lizard in a dress go for it! If you want to draw various pastries with faces do it! Don’t let the thought of it being too dumb stop you because if I’ve learned anything in my several years of drawing it’s that an idea can lead to another and another and another and you may get a really good idea just from doodling dumb things.
  • Here’s a few things that can get you started on drawing better:
  • Dynamic poses | Dynamic clothes | Dynamic figure drawing
  • COMPOSITION | PERSPECTIVE | CONSTRUCTION
  • Anatomy:
  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Heads
  • Body (Female) (Male
  • Color Theory
  • Improving your sketchbook
  • Most importantly, don’t give up! You may not immediately get notes or followers but it’s more important you get better than to have popularity. How do you think those popular artists got to where they are now? To be good you’ve got to work at it.
