Imagine my shock as a neurodivergent teen when I first realized that using large vocabulary and eloquent speech doesn't make you less likely to be misinterpreted, rather it adds an entirely new layer of misinterpretation I had never even realized existed in the form of people thinking you're being snobbish or condescending when you're just trying to be specific

words of power do exist…. i can walk out of my apartment wearing the most fuck shit, e.g. swim trunks as shorts w a zipped up hoodie and no shirt underneath, and just say the words “laundry day” and suddenly it’s way less weird

“laundry day” spell: decreases target’s judgment of outfit by 80%

I picked up a banana print shirt in Vietnam - were talkin LOUD - and the first time someone commented on it I said “It’s banana shirt friday” which stunlocked them and blocked any followup questions.

Turns out that saying “it’s banana shirt friday” enough actually created a holiday at my office where everyone would wear fruit print clothes on fridays! So yes, words of power exist. :)

Preliminary Poll

King Sombra

Image

Submission reason:

King Sombra was introduced as kind of an underwhelming villain. his motivations were unclear, his magic wasn't elaborated upon, and he got beaten by a combination of a baby dragon and a guy throwing his wife. then the comics happened, and hot DAMN did they happen to Sombra. the Reflections arc introduced an alternate universe in which he was the ruler of Equestria (and was totally fucking the main universe's Princess Celestia but that's irrelevant), FIENDship is Magic gave him a backstory with motivations that made actual sense (the Crystal Heart shows the future; when Sombra looked into it, he saw himself as a monster, thus setting off the self-fulfilling prophecy of him killing the ruler of the Crystal Empire and taking it over as a tyrant), and Siege of the Crystal Empire elaborated on his backstory even further, turning him into an incredible tragic villain and even setting him on the path to redemption. and it's not like the comics are completely separate from the show (Oubliettes & Ogres crossed over from the comics, and "To Where And Back Again" was strikingly similar to the comics' first arc), so maybe they could just let Sombra have his happy end? NOPE, Season 9 rendered one of the best arcs of the comic noncanon by having him show up again as a pure evil villain who immediately tries to take over the Crystal Empire again. because Celestia forbid we let sleeping dogs lie.

Shoutout to people with "weird" special interests. Shoutout to people who can't make a job out of their special interests. Shoutout to people who are seen as "unproductive" because of them. Shoutout to people that are "too old/young/anything" for their special interests.

You and your sp/ins matter, and you deserve to spend as much time as you please with them, despite them not being "useful". Time spent with a special interest isn't waisted time.

I don't get this thing about people on tumblr saying they feel bad guilty for using disability services or stuff like that cause they don't really need it like ??? so what

I don't need disability services I would be totally fine without it but if they're happy to help me and make life easier and cheaper for my parents why would I feel bad about use it it's literally there to help people the people that work as support workers choose to do that job cause they WANT to help people why would you feel bad about letting a person do a thing they want to do enough that they made a job from it

This comes from internalised ableism and also society at large.

The same society that will yell at someone for standing up from a wheelchair, or for using a disability parking space for a hidden disability.

Every disability is fake claimed if it's not visual and extreme.

That leads to the internalised ableism that we don't deserve to take care of ourselves unless we meet that standard.

This is the same social trappings that put shame on those who need food stamps for example. They want everyone to do everything themselves and if you can't it's seen often as a moral failing. At least in my experience.

It's used against anything deemed "a drain on society". I've experienced it with disability, food stamps and even when I severely injured myself as a nurse and needed WorkCover.

People who desperately need help are made to feel shame for accessing that help and that seeps back into the culture.

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit

ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like

with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing

is it too much to ask

gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that

This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

thanks this is super helpful! /gen
