one of the ways i know this culture has a massive issue with consent

is the sheer amount of people I’ve known that just lie & tell people they’re deathly allergic to foods they dislike

because otherwise people will hound them, mock them, coax them, harass them, try to force them to eat it, or even trick them into eating it, and they will never hear the end of it

your coworkers will bake it into a fucking pie, call it something else, and wait til your birthday, gather everyone and their first cousins to sit around in a circle waiting for you to put a forkful into your mouth and then point rhythmically at you in a chanting, glaring, sweating, unholy circle like SWISS CHARD SWISS CHARD YOU JUST ATE SWISS CHARD HA HA HA SWISS CHARD NOW YOU LIKE SWISS CHARD

Because forcing someone into a situation where they don’t feel safe declining putting something into their body they’d rather not be there is totes 100% wholesome American fun

And this is something so known that it’s infinitely easier to just lie and tell people that you’ll die if you eat that food…which actually doesn’t always stop it from happening

I literally told one of my coworkers that alcohol interfered with my meds and I wasn’t drinking because it might kill me. (It wasn’t true, but that kind of underscores the point here, because I didn’t feel safe refusing him). He still tried to pressure me into drinking, demanding that I just “try it once and see what happens”. This was only the beginning of the bullshit he pulled.

I work at a camp with a zipline, rock climbing, and other activities. We have to repeatedly get in between people who don’t want to do a challenge and their peers/bosses/parents pressuring them into it. Seeing my coworker, a four-foot-eleven woman, get in an angry drill sergeant’s face and tell him very politely that he’s not allowed to force his soldiers to go on the zip if they don’t want to gave me three extra vertebrae. Some people feel incredibly entitled to other’s choices, and when you remind them that they aren’t, they get aggressive. Most times passively. Some times not.

For some people, no doesn’t mean no. No means force. The fact that they can’t legally use it outright doesn’t tell them it’s wrong, just that they have to resort to trickery to get their way, because they know best. They choose professions like police officer, nurse, or parent to assert that control, that need for dominance over those they consider unworthy. And we let them, because we as a society believe that certain people should be controlled for their own good, and teach that from the cradle.

Consent isn’t limited to sexual experiences. You’re not being a “baby” or “stubborn” for not engaging in experiences you don’t want to.

I think it’s worth looking at why bad endings ruin stories. This will be a big rambling thread I’m gonna chip away at so feel free to mute if it’s not your cup of tea #storytalk

I was inspired to write this after @MagnoliaPearl posted something about the ending of Parks & Rec. Which was abysmal. To the point where when I rewatched the series, I stopped before the last season. It’s an ending that felt like a betrayal even though it was a “happy” one

You can’t just toss in good things happening to characters that they haven’t earned. Everyone can’t win the lottery in the last episode. That’s not a happy ending, it’s Deus ex machina that betrays all the things the characters actually struggled for

If you were to draw a story curve, in general a happy ending is one where the characters end up better than where they started but really not too much better. It really depends heavily on how wildly the rest of your graph swings during the rest of your book

Here’s an entertaining clip of Kurt Vonnegut explaining a little tongue in cheek bit about graphing stories that’s actually pretty helpful for explaining what I’m getting at

If you look at P&R that way, it’d probably look a little something like this. It’s easy enough to see where reality breaks

It’s a bit of an exaggeration but not much. The point is, you probably shouldn’t swing too far up from whatever was your highest point during the story. If your previous high was “couple gets married,” then “couple has baby” is a realistic ending. “Couple win lottery” maybe not

Actually, never have anyone win the lottery after the first act. Unless it’s an inciting incident that forms the foundation of the entire story…no lottery. That’s a good rule

But the thing that really got me thinking was why does it matter? The show is over, right? It’s not like I’m then forced to then watch a show about Leslie Knope being President. I think it matters for a few reasons and bear with me here cuz I’m making this up as I go…

One is what I’ll call the Evergreen Ending principle. Which is that even though the story has ended, you need to be able to imagine the characters are continuing to have similar adventures forever. That’s part of what makes an ending feel good, especially for serialized media

Obviously, things will be different because the Real Story already happened. But it needs to be easy to imagine how these characters go on doing essentially the same stuff forever. The only thing worse than the ending P&R gave us would be one where Leslie retires, for example

This is also why I hate epilogues. Like the ending of Harry Potter where they all old and have kids. Let the audience imagine what happens next. That part isn’t for the creator to say. Back off and let your audience take over

If you change too much, even for the better, you’ve also ruined any possibility of the Evergreen Ending. You’ve essentially created a whole new series where everything is different, which only works if you’re then planning to tell that new story

Bad endings can never be fixed. Every other story problem can potentially be resolved. Which I think is why those moments tend to pull back the curtain on a writer’s failings. It’s why writing endings is so stressful

But here’s what I think works. And this is obviously just my opinion and who the hell am I? But I think that when you reach the real end of your story, your plot should be on autopilot. If you’ve done your job, the story will just fly home itself

Don’t try to solve any more problems with plot. Unless you have a twist ending, accept that it’ll be a somewhat predictable finish and that’s okay. The only thing you need to tend to is the audience’s emotional needs. And have those needs reflect themselves in the characters

A real happy ending is knowing the characters are going to be okay. That they’ve finally found a little bit of balance and ended up better than they started. That who they are is good enough and always has been. And that they can handle whatever comes next.

Not me spiraling because I just realised the soundtrack that’s used in Arthur’s second proposal is The Bond of Sacrifice, aka The Music of Angst and Drama, aka The Serenade Which Arthur Dies To. I know this track is generally played in emotional scenes, but they can’t just use it for both events, and throw in these parallels–

–and expect me to be okay.

I call upon the fan fic writing gods to bless you with the perseverance to finish one of your unfinished drafts.

May your fingers dance along the letters upon your device with ease, may the devil of distraction stay far from you, and may your work not need much editing.

I pass this blessing upon every fan fic writer out there.

we make fun of thorin getting lost in the shire but you know the nazgul also had to keep asking for directions to find bag end so maybe hobbits’ city planning is just wack

The Hobbits have spent generations making their roads complex af to keep Gandalf out

Theory accepted

Which is also why Gandalf is always late

but of course this is the absolute Least successful way to keep GANDALF of all people out, because-

  1. it’s a challenge
  2. that WON’T potentially kill him

which is really in short supply lately.

so while the hobbits think they are being hostile. what they are actually saying in Gandalf-speak is “please come back. we love you.”

thinking about how an anonymous group (WHO DOESN’T SEEM TO BE AFFILIATED W/ SESAME STREET!!!) found out where jon armond lived and made him swear he wouldn’t show anyone cracks before they gave it to him

Image

oh i am SO glad you asked. gimme a sec

  • Ok SO. This guy (Jon Armond) claimed to have seen a Sesame Street short as a kid where the cracks in a girl’s wall come to life. One of these cracks is referred to as the “Crack Monster”, which was apparently so unsettling that it “scarred him for life”.
  • After all was said and done, Jon would end up spending about THIRTY FUCKING YEARS looking for the short. THIRTY. He considered it his life’s work.
  • Listen. I can appreciate that level of dedication to recovering a lost piece of animation history, but uh. damn.
  • Anyway, he posted about it online, where many other people reported seeing it as well. The fact that there were multiple accounts of its existence, but little to no information on it anywhere, was what made it start garnering attention on the internet. Now a bunch of people are looking for it.
  • No one knew for sure what the title was yet, so most referred to it as the “Crack Monster Cartoon”, or something similar. The lack of a known title (or music, or voice actors, or writers, or literally anything) made it extremely difficult to research, but there were too many reports to write it off as a hoax.
  • So people kept looking.
  • I’m gonna leave out some details in the middle here, since I don’t wanna make this thread too long. But it’s super interesting, I’d recommend checking it out for yourself. Let’s just skip to the weird part.
  • After years of searching, Armond received a fax to his workplace with an untraceable number. It read:
  • “WE HAVE THE COPY”
  • Additionally, they said they would send him said copy of the short, on one condition: he was to never show it publicly, or post it online in any way
  • Whoever it was that contacted him, they did NOT want it to be viewed by the general public.
  • here it is, btw.
  • So six months pass. Armond gets a letter, which says
  • “WE TRUST THIS COMPLETES YOUR SEARCH”
  • Also enclosed in the envelope is a DVD.

To clarify, he received it on a SUNDAY. These people, whoever they are, found out where he WORKED, and then went to the effort of delivering it PERSONALLY on a day where there was NO MAIL, just to send the message THAT THEY KNEW WHERE HE LIVED AS WELL.

FOR THAT SESAME STREET CARTOON.

  • So now he has it. And he tells people he has it, but that no one else can see it. Which is, of course, INCREDIBLY unsatisfying to the people online who have also been searching for it, right?
  • Enter Dycaite, the founder of the Lost Media Wiki.
  • So Dycaite started looking into it as well. Like I said, I’m skipping a bunch of details in this thread, but long story short he eventually received an anonymous email.
  • The email contained CRACKS.
  • There were no instructions telling him not to share it. Dycaite didn’t hesitate, which is how we got the version of CRACKS that I linked.
  • With the newfound context provided by the video, it actually makes complete sense that it was only aired a few times. This short was made right before the word “Crack” became widely known as a euphemism for drugs, which is how you get characters like “The Crack Monkey”
  • Sesame Street doesn’t want to be associated with that, so they stop airing it right? Eventually it’s forgotten about, the only record of its existence being Sesame Street’s digital archives.
  • (It’s believed that the person who emailed Dycaite had access to these archives, due to the timestamp and title at the start of their version of the clip.)
  • So… that’s it right? It SEEMS like it should just be a classic story of formerly lost media, cartoon stops airing, gets lost, people online find it again. We even know WHY it was lost, not because it was “too scary” or whatever, just because it didn’t age well.
  • But there’s still SO MUCH mystery surrounding CRACKS.
  • The version of CRACKS that Jon Armond received was different from the version Dycaite received. Armond says his version appears to be an actual recording, as it starts with a brief appearance of Bert and Ernie, before transitioning to the short. As mentioned earlier, Dycaite’s version seems to come from some kind of archive.
  • So it can be reasonably assumed that the people who contacted Armond are not affiliated with the person who emailed Dycaite. The person who contacted Dycaite also didn’t seem to care if the short was released to the public. Armond still hasn’t released his version of the recording to the public, though has apparently shown it to a few people privately.
  • So why all the secrecy? And why was Jon Armond given a copy? Did they simply feel bad for him, or was there something they didn’t want him to discover in his search? Was the version Armond received (and therefore the version that was aired) somehow different from the version Dycaite got????
  • i don’t fucking know babey!!! and neither does anyone else apparently!!!!
  • oh AND the group who didn’t want CRACKS to ever be viewed doesn’t actually seem to be affiliated with Sesame Street, since they presumably don’t have access to the archives. (otherwise, why not remove the info from the beginning and send that version?)

so there’s an unofficial Sesame Street Forbidden Knowledge Guild out there i fuckin guess!!!!!!!!

  • anyways that’s cracks for you

(this isn’t comprehensive btw, and i may have gotten some stuff wrong. if you wanna know more here’s a good video on it)

How the fuck do you find this information?? I mean you DID NOT sesrch for this in the first instance …

Did you?

I love weird internet mysteries SO much

Top 5 Doctor/Clara Moments 😁

Avatar

*heavy breathing* this is so hard 😂. I've been asked this before and I think I answer something different every time too cause it depends on the day I guess

1. The "do you think I care so little" moment 😭 i just CANNOT. like helloooooo the doctor is just like yes you betrayed me in a moment of weakness but I love you and want whats best for you and I want you to be happy AND I DIE EVERY TIME I SEE THAT SCENE. its a Taylor Swift's Afterglow moment dammit.

2. The 4.5 billion years of torture and hell he went through for Clara. UGH

3. Any of there hugs. I'm not picky. Pick one. Okay but actually

This one. Or....

This one. Probs my top 2

4. Their banter. I mean, that's not an actual moment per se its just their entire relationship 😂

5. Just how adventurous and entirely reckless they were together. They'd go to the ends of the earth for each other and you can just sense how much they cared for each other. That's not a moment either but its the essence of their time together
