imagine: you get your memories back after years of amnesia to find out your whole species is dead and earth doesn’t exist anymore. that the only thing left of your culture is your weird ex and his busted honda civic that barely even works that he stole from the government when he was 13. And he’s been taking members of an alien species for trips in his honda civic and they’re all like “woah it’s so cool” and you get upset because it’s NOT COOL it’s a honda civic, the turn signals don’t even work “wow it can go up hills” yeah OF COURSE IT CAN GO UP HILLS EVERY CAR COULD DO THAT. but they’ve never seen a car before so everything it does is the coolest thing ever. And your ex’s only tool is a fucking screwdriver which is somehow also cool to this dumbass alien species even though it’s a fucking screwdriver so you just look like an idiot screaming about how none of this is even cool it’s actually really shitty but your whole planet is gone so you can’t even prove it but also you’ve had a constant drumming sounding in your head since you were 10 slowly driving you insane. I would become evil too.

- In order to catch a mediocre serial killer, Will must pose as Hannibal’s date for a series of pretentious social events. @plotfool-blog (absolutely wonderful fic! stop making murder so fun to read please ahhhh)
- Hannibal and Will pretend to date in order to convince the BAU of Will’s stability, this is course, goes wonderfully @spicyreyes (Hannibal is such a manipulative bitch in this - it’s amazing Dark!Will content)
- Hannibal and Will have to pretend to be a couple for a case. Everything goes downhill from there @coloredink (The ending!! I was melting!! How dare you be such an amazing writer!)
- After being dismissed entirely by Dr Sutcliffe, Will seeks out a second opinion regarding his degrading health—without Hannibal present. He receives a diagnosis. Hannibal receives a reality check @embulalia (I cannot stress how much I love this fic!!)
- In order to catch a killer who is targeting “perfect” couples at a high-end planned community, Will and Hannibal go undercover as a married couple who just moved into the neighborhood @earthsickwithoutyou (another absolutely wonderful fic!!)
- When Franklyn’s advances of friendship become too much for even Hannibal to politely ignore, he enlists Will’s help. @gleamingandwholeanddeadly (I am obsessed with the trope of Franklyn being the catalyst for Will and Hannibal’s relationship)

- A serial killer is murdering gay couples in Baltimore. The main suspect cannot be arrested… unless Jack could figure something out. Are Hannibal and Will ready to be an undercover couple?
Then a favorite of mine: secret/fake marriage fics (so many of these are post-fall because we want to EXTEND the Slow Burn more than it already was)
- Will met Hannibal two years ago during the investigation of the Wound Man case. They fell in love quickly and married each other a year later. Now another year had passed, they still had not realized their partners were the serial killers they admired the most. (Season 1 already married AU)
- Everyone knows that Will and Hannibal are married. Not everyone knows that they are married to each other. @bonesandscales (this is the fic that sent me spiraling back into the Hannibal fandom in the year of 2020 so thank you and curse you this was so good)
- When Will Graham hears that Hannibal Lecter has been threatened with deportation, he’s far more dismayed than he ever thought he would be. But a flippant suggestion from Brian Zeller gives him an idea @fragile-teacup (this is the best and I laughed…a lot)
- After their plunge off of the cliff, Will has begrudgingly agreed to run away with Hannibal to France. They spend two years together in a delicate equilibrium: Will acts as Hannibal’s keeper, ensuring that he doesn’t murder and cannibalize anyone, while Hannibal plays a long game of romance and seduction @darling-on-ice
- Will and Hannibal have been living as a gay married couple for three years, but they haven’t slept in the same room let alone the same bed. Will Graham has a reckoning, one way or another
- After the fall, Will thought he and Hannibal had settled into a standstill of safe domesticity living together in Paris until Hannibal had asked him to come to the opera with him, posing as his husband, which was just a cover, another part for them to play @hanniscats

Okay you know Hannibal and Will post finale until they are old and dead have an Old Married Couple squabble where Hannibal asserts he's a DOCTOR so he KNOWS health stuff and Will is like "I'm pretty sure you lost your license to practice back in 2014" and Hannibal is like "I'm double board certified in--" and Will is like "--in cannibalism and murder? You're not board certified in ANYTHING would you like me to CALL and CONFIRM"

This very personally affected me. After leaving a physically/sexually/verbally/emotionally abusive relationship when I was almost 20 I got a full academic tuition scholarship to a great University. I tried so hard to make it work. The dorm housing was 15k a year (and I had no one to co-sign a loan so I could live on-campus) so I had to work full-time and live off campus. My grades suffered and eventually I dropped out and nearly committed suicide.
I spent the next 10 years feeling like I ruined my own life. How could I have done it better? How could my life be different if I just pulled myself up by my bootstraps harder?
Then very recently I had a therapist who said I couldn't have! It's a documented thing-- The Fallacy of the Free Ride. It didn't cover books. It didn't cover housing. It didn't cover food. I HAD to work full time where my more affluent and better supported peers didn't have to work at all, in many cases.
And after 10 years, I'm finally starting to forgive myself.
