today is my birthday! i’m 33 today and i have done an ungodly amount of stupid shit in my life that honestly probably should have gotten me killed. so here are 33 hard-won things i’ve learned that i wish someone had told me sooner.

  1. whenever you buy an object, you are going to own that object for your entire life unless you make the conscious decision to throw it away or give it a new home. maybe other people don’t struggle with this as much as i do, but i’ve grown to become a little exhausted by finding a thing and realizing i don’t want it anymore, but i don’t have the energy or motivation to do anything with it. signed, a woman with a packed 10x10 storage unit who is now extremely hesitant to buy new things.
  2. food, and by that i mean good food (and by that i don’t necessarily mean healthy food, but food of good quality that you love), is necessary to live, and buying it, preparing it, and eating it is not a chore. the sooner you accept this and make food a priority in your life, the healthier you’ll be.
  3. speaking of food, not everything you buy should be the cheapest version of it. personally i’ve found it’s always worth it to splurge on good olive oil, butter, and canned tomatoes. for years i thought i was an awful cook because i was cooking with cheap, disgusting olive oil that made my food taste like shit.
  4. speaking of food part 2, i can’t BELIEVE how long this took me to figure out, but mise en place is the real real. get your shit out and organized and prepped *before* you start cooking, even if it makes things take longer. and yes, it is always worth it to do the dishes as you go, which pisses me off.
  5. when i was teaching myself how to cook and feeling daunted about it, the best advice i ever got was to aim to learn 15 recipes and then put them in rotation.
  6. this is the most horrific and awful truth i have forced myself to accept: there may come a day you can no longer digest your favorite foods, and you will either have to stop eating them, or remain very close to a toilet. i’m sorry.
  7. other people are always going to misperceive you and misunderstand you, sometimes willfully. other people’s opinions of you don’t actually have anything to do with you. they’re not your business, and you don’t have to worry about it or change yourself.
  8. when innocuous or neutral things make you irrationally angry or upset, step back, realize you’re having a big reaction, and then when you’re ready, pay very close attention to the thing that upset you, because you’re about to learn something important about yourself.
  9. a pill sorter can save your life. i don’t know how i managed my meds without one.
  10. sometimes college is about learning stuff, and not about becoming something.
  11. no matter how many perfectionist tendencies you have, it’s worth it to remind yourself that no matter how much of a mess you actually are, you deserve to be loved.
  12. if you’re always forgetting to do important but tedious things, set an alarm and set aside one hour of each week, not to do the important tedious things, but to assess what needs to be done, and *schedule* the important tedious things for the following week. this literally changed my life.
  13. during that hour, make a meal plan too. the point of doing this is condense the time in which you’re making decisions (what to do, what to eat, etc) so you don’t have to burden yourself with them throughout the week. decision fatigue is real. any way you can alleviate that is a good thing.
  14. learn the difference between aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive, and assertive behavior. recognize when you’re being one of the first three, re-assess and aim for being assertive, even if it’s hard.
  15. you can tell you’ve processed trauma, not when the traumatic thing stops upsetting you to think about, but when the traumatic thing takes up the same size in your brain as all your other memories.
  16. if you’re one of those people who never seems to finish projects or follow through with things, there’s a chance you may just grow out of it naturally. until then, follow your interests and don’t feel bad about putting down a hobby to pick up another.
  17. if you love stickers but have sticker anxiety, buy vinyl stickers. you can re-stick them.
  18. there are only a few careers i can think of that you have to commit to early in life because getting the undergraduate credentials is a pain in the ass (teachers, doctors, and engineers, from my research). nearly everything else you can switch to later, which takes a LOT of pressure off having to figure out what you want to do with your life.
  19. people say there’s no money in becoming an artist, writer, musician, etc. actually there’s a ton of money in all of those things, it’s just in the stuff other people want you to make and never what you want to make. it’s still worth it to develop the creative skill and not force yourself into business school because it’s more “practical” or whatever.
  20. sleep when you’re tired. SLEEP WHEN YOU’RE TIRED. don’t beat yourself up about it, don’t tell yourself you shouldn’t be tired or that you’ve already slept too much, just take a fucking nap. you would never say “hm i’ve already had enough water today, therefore i should not be thirsty” so don’t treat sleep the same way.
  21. when you build a piece of furniture from target or ikea or whatever, the first thing you should do is count all the little screws and things to make sure everything’s there that should be. it sucks to get halfway into putting something together only to find there’s a piece missing and you have to go buy it.
  22. learn to travel by yourself, go out to eat by yourself, see a movie by yourself. in my early 20s i was scared to do these things, but i do them so often now i don’t even think about it. it’s the most fulfilling skill i’ve ever learned.
  23. adding to the above, if you’re a people-pleaser, being alone is especially important, because you’ve probably developed the habit of making the people you’re with more comfortable and happy than yourself, and you’re missing a lot of the beautiful and interesting things around you. when you’re by yourself, you can focus on what *you* want without guilt.
  24. sometimes you’ll want to break things off with a friend for reasons that are no one’s fault, and you don’t want it to be volatile or make a big thing of it, in which case the goal is to simply fade out of their life. it is okay to let people go.
  25. shame is useless. get rid of it.
  26. no matter how much of yourself you put into your art (or writing, or music, or whatever), when people criticize it, they are not criticizing you. they are having a reaction colored by their own tastes and perspectives. their opinion of your work has nothing to do with you. you don’t have to take everyone’s feedback. in fact you don’t have to take anyone’s feedback. the other side to this coin unfortunately is that compliments don’t have anything to do with you either. it’s good to accept this because it means you’ll stop seeking validation from other people and won’t let anyone else’s perspectives impact your work. anything nice anyone says about your work is merely a bonus to an already good thing.
  27. if you’re an artist of any kind, take one day a year to look up opportunities like grants, funding, residencies, workshops, whatever. put the due dates of all of them on a calendar for the year following and get into the habit of applying for stuff. getting rejected sucks, application fees suck, but in all the years i’ve been doing this, it has always, always been worth it. these things give you a chance not only to help fund and support what you’re passionate about, but they force you to take your own work seriously, and that is something that’s absolutely necessary in order to be successful.
  28. you must become your own greatest advocate. in all respects–in health, in love, in happiness, in freedom, you must. no one will ever fight as hard for you as you will. this in turn will give you the strength and motivation to help others fight for themselves too. the only way the world will ever get better is if every person on this planet learns to see themselves as equals to everyone around them.
  29. brag about yourself as often as you can. for one, people develop their perceptions of you based on how you treat yourself and speak about yourself. but for two, it’s the fastest way to figure out which people to keep in your life, because they’re the ones who are going “oh hell yeah, you’re awesome.”
  30. be the person other people want to brag to.
  31. at some point in your life, someone is going to hurt you, and it’s going to be willful and intentional. it is not worth it to waste brain space figuring out why they did it or why you think you deserved it. all you have to do is let yourself feel that pain, acknowledge it, and try to move on.
  32. no matter how bad off you think you are, recovery is possible. the first and hardest step is to learn you’re worth the time and effort it takes to recover from the awful things that have happened to you.
  33. developing an expertise does not mean you’re getting objectively better at something. becoming an expert is only the process of seeing your mistakes and having the patience to sit in the discomfort of not knowing how to fix them.

cold ass take. i’ve got enough adult shit to deal with irl, i don’t need it in my media. i have enough complex real life issues to think about in my professional life studying polsci. i watch cartoons for FUN, specifically to get away from all this shit.

I think if your reading comprehension is this shitty you shouldn’t be allowed to reblog posts

Enlighten me about the true meaning of this post. I think my reading comprehension is pretty darn good thank you very much

THEN WHAT’S THE POINT OF THE POST

Everything everywhere all at once is a film about a girl ripping the entire universe apart just to find a part of her mother that she feels understands her. And everything everywhere all at once is a film about a mother ripping the entire universe apart just to understand her daughter. And my chest feels like it’s caving in when I think about it too long

theres this specific brand of judaism thats """all-accepting""" (of women, lgbt ppl, mentaly ill/disabled ppl, etc) and 'fight with gd behind a dennys' and uwu cute and scrunkly and non-threatening that was bred in captivity by secular americans thats somehow treated as the "real", widespread version of judaism by people on social media and its so so funny and annoying at the same time. and often coexists in gentiles alongside antisemitic beliefs, talking points and ideas. anyways. it drives me insane.

im not saying judaism is bad or inherently violent or oppressive or anything like that. im referring to this portrayal of a very complex, diverse and rich religion practiced differently by millions of people around the world - portraying a watered-down, sterile version of judaism that’s easily palpable to culturally-christian leftists (this is done to islam too) thru aesthetics, blatantly mistranslated religious text, fictional characters and cropped poetry, while flat out erasing the nuance of a jewish life, of a religious life, of jewish histories, all the while treating antisemitism as a theoretical phenomenon (and often downplaying it) and not viewpoints and ideas woven into every fabric of society (not just american, not just western and not just christian societies, altho yall hate talking abt that), ignoring that a huge portion of traditions and history are based around and rooted thousands of years of prosecution. and limiting combating antisemitism to fiction, bc real living breathing jews are harder to defend (even “bad” jews dont deserve antisemitism). anyways idek what my point is at this point. it’s just very tiring and disrespectful.

this is ok for gentiles to rb btw

a few thoughts

this trend flattens Judaism into something that’s an individual stance w/ no complex obligations to a community, and something that can just be a part of you w/out you looking any different to the secular white goyim who think they’re awfully leftist; it doesn’t care about Jews who are inconvenient to treating Jews as a folk punk subculture prone to lactose intolerance.

and like, it downplays the genuine struggles of queer Jews and of Jewish women, in our interactions w/ the praxy and the communities and like … erases the work and struggle of many leftist Jews who see a link between our convictions, or queer Jews who remain connected in one way or another, or sever ties and later come back. it paints Judaism as w/out internal conflict or contradiction.

there’s also a kinda weird goyish projection of assuming that commie queer Jews must be interested in doing the No True Scotsman shpil that liberal and leftist Christians love doing. no like, i’m sorry to say, but the, idk, Orthodox poskim who call homosexuality demonic are still Jews.

i reconnected later in life, and navigating the contradictions of holding firm to that choice while being queer hasn’t necessarily been easy, or pleasant, and it’s not like i’ve never regretted returning. and like, i don’t have religious trauma from a Jewish context, but i know many who do, who’ve stayed or who left only to come back and flattening that to the easy, natural triumph of the “right” (palatable to American white goyim of liberal bent) way of being Jewish is an insult.

many of us come back or stay despite what other Jews are like, too. it’s not called the bloody yoke of Heaven for nothing.

i know we've already made a hundred jokes about it but oh my god. dean winchester escaping heaven with his car to save the multiverse is a real thing that happened. like that was airing on live tv in the year 2023. he drove. the car. and it took him to an alternate dimension where his parents were better people. you cant make this shit up

im sorry WHAT happened

are you in a position to receive information that might harm you

Wait I'm sorry WHAT???

okay so. tldr for anyone who didn't know anything about the supernatural prequel. november 19th 2020, the show ends with a mediocre at best ending. dean dies young and goes to heaven where he waits for sam to die for 30 years i guess idk. it was bad. no one is happy with it. one of the people who's maybe the least happy with it is jensen ackles, who's been playing dean winchester for the past 15 years

so half a year later he buys the rights to supernatural to make his own prequel show. kind of insane, i know. what's more insane is that the premise of the prequel contradicts canon. way back in season 5-ish it was established that mary and john winchester only got together through divine intervention because sam and dean's births were pivotal in the plan to start the apocalypse. it's long and complicated and i don't really want to explain the plot of the best two seasons of this show because it would take way too long but.

what you need to know is that the premise of the prequel does not make sense within the context of canon. jensen ackles and the writers are aware that this does not make sense. supernatural is also a show that has messed with the concept of alternate universes since the 5th season

the winchesters is a show revolving around mary and john winchester, who are sam and dean's parents. it covers their first meeting in the 70s and their hunting adventures. theyre also fighting against a previously unmentioned group of monsters called the akrida. central to defeating the akrida is this man who's apparently been fighting them and knows exactly what they are and what they're after. this man is dean

dean shows up in the last episode to explain everything. apparently this is in fact post-spn finale dean who escaped from heaven after his death. he caught wind of the akrida (who are monsters created as god's failsafe in case he was defeated. god was evil in the end, just roll with it) and left to help kill them. the world of the prequel show is an alternate dimension, presumably one where mary and john winchester get to leave the hunting life and be their own people free from the tragedy that eventually befalls them in the original show. no, destiel does not happen. yeah.

I unironically fucking love this. Absolutely losing my mind. Fucking hell Jenny.

I don't know what to do with this information, so I'm inflicting it on all of you.

“Americans believe in big portions! That’s so crazy.” Look at this European getting scammed into paying for 100 calories worth of food. Fool. Idiot. You wish you could have this 16 ounce Big Gulp and this serving of rice I will eat off for three days but you can’t. Cope and seethe.

I also love watching Italians get mad at Italian American food. You’re cranky because your hungry, aren’t you? Cranky because you don’t get that delicious olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip your bread in before meals? Cranky because your pizza kinda sucks?

Beef? You aren’t eating, I just said that.

who has that one post that’s like “americans will lightly rib british people for their accents and brits will be like ‘your children will die in a school shooting’“

I feel like starting the post with "haha Europeans can't afford a lot of food" when indeed that is actually the case for many people you don't then get to say you were doing some light ribbing. Maybe if Americans didn't want people making the bad taste jokes (which are in bad taste! I agree!) you should do less joking about things that aren't funny.

[Image description Tweet from FeoUltima "Kojima would never name a trans woman character Sirona Ryan, he'd name her something like Hard Mommy and trans women all over would go "changing my name to that" in response."]

"Hard Mommy is the leader of cougar cell. Her specialty is defense, but I guess you've realized that by now. By analyzing the battlefield she is able to quickly deduce perfect formations for infantry deployment and fortifications. She has lead her men against seemingly impossible onslaughts, including Chemical and Biological attacks. Fighting along side her men, she has taken more than a few bullets for them. They respect her like she was their own mother." "So thats why they call her Hard Mommy..." "No, Hard Mommy isn't for that. Its because she's a top."

being a dom is only cool if people like you. otherwise it's super embarrassing. if you're a sub you can be like "ahhh i wanna get fucked superrr hard >w<" and it's kind of endearing. if you're a dom and you say "i want to FUCK someone.. who will be mommys little KITTY today .." and no one actually wants to have sex with you, you may as well kill yourself. because there's no coming back from that

callback to the time I wrote literal pages of lore and worldbuilding, including a universe with a creation story, afterlife metaphysics, and a timeline featuring the rapture, a divine astral plane turf war, and the introduction of gods and magic to the modern mortal world

for a kink scene where I roleplayed as a sexy demon lady

I workshopped my character's name, voice and personality and wrote an entire universe to hold her. for a scene that lasted about an hour. if that's not DMing but for sex I don't know what is

in retrospect it is really funny how into the spiderverse was a good and popular movie and the mcu immediately SHIT themselves and threw multiverses into all of their shit as if that was what made the movie popular instead of like. being a good movie

But... the multiverse was already going to be in the MCU... Like it's just that the idea is in the zeitgeist...

I just have to say that it's so weird reading how transphobes think of trans bodies as mutilated and gross when they never would have thought my body pre-transition was worthy. The "argument" of mutilated beauty that transphobes have tossed around is just a fear mongering tactic, because they don't tend to actually love or appreciate and see value in bodies that don't "neatly" fit into male and female, with no overlap and no nuances.

The idea that bodies have to be "pure" and "unmutilated" and "free of sin" or whatever else is a deeply fascist mindset, and I do not say that lightly and I do not say this as a joke of any kind. It is inherently fascist.
