{♛} —– To be standing here, right now, was an honor; the best of the best gathered to protect humanity. This was the sort of thing that dreams were made of: incredible, wonderful, unreachable dreams with a nightmarish twist, once you took a step back to admire the entire canvas. Right now, Jesse was focused on himself, ignoring the rest; too full of himself to realize that he was here for much more than his skills and abilities. There was a cause he was to be fighting for, something so much BIGGER than himself.
He drew in a long breath as he looked around; the Shatterdome, it was incredible up close, full of other people who were just as good as he was at their job: the brightest, the strongest, the quickest, the whatever-else-st. A hand silently moved to his hat, tipping it upwards to get the full idea of what the Shatterdome really was like, and he still couldn’t grasp it all. Some of man’s greatest feats were accomplished here, were started here, and would continue to be made here -- Right?
The tour seemed never ending, and yet, he wished it hadn’t ended so soon. There were so many faces here, so many people who were so different from him, and so different from one another, but were capable of working so well together. He frowned at the thought, tongue pushing against his bottom teeth. So many pilots who stayed together, who came here together. Who needs ‘em, right?
He was left with a more than bitter taste in his mouth for the rest of the day, only allowing the discontent to subside when he was being led down the alley where he would be housed. He was looking for a specific number, watching as people around him disbanded to their rooms. By the time his number popped up, he was left alongside a small group, a couple faces he felt it necessary to remember.
The next morning came too soon, beginning with breakfast and training. It was something he was used to, but the circadian rhythm of his body was so badly offset, he had quite a time getting to sleep to begin with. It would be a few days before he was into a proper schedule; besides, other people were surely dealing with the same problems. That night, as he returned to his room, he found himself casting side-glances to a face he had seen the night before.
Another day, a similar cycle. Finally, Jesse felt the need to introduce himself to his neighbor; and with a grin and a tip of his hat, he spoke.

Jesse’s eyes were focused on something across the way, cigar burning down wastefully. His mind was blank, and yet, he was too focused on the nothingness dancing in his head to acknowledge the real world around him.
