Sometimes I think I’ve got a good idea of sans character then I remember deep down I consider him kinder then papyrus and I have to come to terms with the fact that I have also fandom-fied him and it hurts, anyway congratulations on staying true to his character your the strongest soldier out there

Avatar

lol don't beat yourself up. i wouldn't use "kind" as a qualifier, but i do think papyrus can come across as much blunter than sans. he's loud and banging and over the top in a way that exaggerates his other attributes, and one of those is his social awkwardness. he's shameless! both when he's being positive and uplifting AND when he's being a bitch. sans is more... contained. less vocal. but that's something that applies to his character in general.

more than anything i think—as jaded and more pessimistic as sans has become with time and his reset knowledge—both him and papyrus start from the same core personality. papyrus' kindness is obviously important to his character, but people tend to play it up too much in my opinion. he's just as capable of disregarding people's suffering and unhappiness for his own interests (empress undyne ending, king mtt ending, remaining our friend in spite of our actions) as his brother. he's just... very loud about his positivity and caring for other people and DOES want what's best for everyone... when it's not particularly inconvenient to him. lol.

thinking about how the extra area added on to a pacifist run of undertale, the true lab, is about alphys's past mistakes. how it ends with the story reaffirming that, despite the pain she's caused, the thing that matters is that she has now made the choice to do the right thing. she's still worthy of her friends' love.

thinking about how undertale doesn't expect the player to get a pacifist ending for the first time. how it's more likely than not that the player will kill toriel the first time they battle her, how lots of players don't initially figure out how to end undyne's fight without killing her, etc. what it expects — not even expects, really, but hopes — is that the player, if they care enough, will use their canonically acknowledged power over time to make up for those mistakes.

no matter how many neutral runs a player has done before committing to the pacifist run, the thing that matters to the characters, to the story, is that you've chosen, now, to do the right thing.

compared to alphys, the player honestly gets off lightly, in that you're the only one (other than flowey) who really remembers any harm you might have caused. and any direct guilting the game could have done about it is long past at this point. instead, as undertale often does, it makes its point via parallels: alphys caused harm, and she knows it. she has committed to being better. in doing so, she has unlocked for herself a better ending to her story. and she deserves it. she's forgiven.

those structural narrative parallels are all over undertale, if you know where to look. and that's one of the things that makes it so fuckin' good.

how do you think papyrus will react if he found out sans was a smoker for a while and it clicked to him he's been doing it for years?

Avatar

I feel like you'd be able to smell it on him, but maybe Sans could use the excuse that it's the smell of the bar(tender).

Probably just extra disgust-- it's gross, even by Sans standards. Would that account for Sans being slimy? (Would it even be harmful to skeletons??)

I think he'd assume Sans picked it up from some of his acquaintances at first, and wheel in the local school's TV to show a MTT-brand "say NO! to peer pressure" video. With a sad sigh, he'd have to ask you to be a good example for his brother, since Sans is more vulnerable to social influence.

Real talk though I don't think there's much Papyrus would do except nag. He already nags Sans for the other unhealthy habits he's got going on and hasn't seemed to push deeper into the "why" behind any of it at the time of the game's story. As much as he complains, he lets Sans make adult decisions-- and for what it's worth, Sans does do the same for Papyrus.

How do you think Toriel would react if she knew sans told frisk “you’d be dead where you stand” conversation threatening them and all that?

Sorry if this was asked before x

Avatar

Since everything worked out in the end and he's done nothing else to ever hurt Frisk, I don't think she'd worry too much about it as a one time comment. She'd write it off as being his weird sense of humor.

You know that bit in the game where you can insult Papyrus and Sans flatly says "sarcasm isn't cool". Like that, except Toriel flatly saying "edgelord humor is uncool, Sans".

To use a word Alphys taught her, she'd say that Sans was being ''''cringe''''

so like usually i don’t really like to send it asks but here we go? i really love your undertale content!! it’s been years since i first found the game, and it helped me connect with a lot of friends. your content reminds me of how it felt experiencing it for the first time, that feeling of like “woah this is so neat” and it’s super cool 👍

Avatar

This is probably the nicest message I've been sent! Thank you! 😭

I'm really glad my posts could give you that feeling, they were fun to share! The first time playing the game is something special that I wish I could relive.

Hey, could you please delete or private that reblog of my theory post? It's causing issues for mobile users. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Avatar

Meant to reblog it to my private reblog account, not my main.

oop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Would still like to see another version of it for reference though, it was good stuff.

If flowey didn’t have any sort of conflict with sans

(Aka he didn’t kill everyone in his resets etc)

Do you think they would get along ?

Avatar

It's implied if not outright stated that Flowey started by being friends with everyone first, before he got bored and started trying more violent things to remain entertained. So I think they could get along fine.

On the other hand, Flowey definitely likes Papyrus more and keeps a cool distance from Sans, so I don't think much about Sans' personality is appealing to him. It doesn't help at all that by the time of the game, he's caught on that Sans has some sort of ulterior motive regarding time travelers-- like the dynamic between a detective and the criminal he's trying to catch. But I actually don't think that's the primary reason he doesn't like Sans much.

Even if it were Asriel we were talking about before he became Flowey, he would gravitate more towards someone straightforward, principled, kind, and genuine. Sans is non-committal, secretive, purposely morally grey, and sometimes sinister. In general, it seems like Asriel admires people who are earnest and determined. He admires Frisk and Chara at different points for their unwavering convictions. He seems to be closer to Asgore, since Asgore is the first one he went to after becoming Flowey. He's attached to Papyrus as a favorite character. I could be misremembering but I thought there were lines that he thinks Undyne is cool when pushed to fight, as well.

Comparatively, he actively voices disdain for characters like Sans (with good reason), Alphys (with good reason), and even Toriel. Toriel, who he still cares about, he digs into a lot as an "idiot" who can't take care of herself. These characters often say one thing but do another-- to Flowey this probably feels "flaky" and hypocritical.

Asriel/Flowey has more of a "follower" personality until the end of the pacifist route of the game, when he comes up with his own set of ideals to live by. Until he reaches that point in his character, I think he prefers people who "have the answers, even if they're wrong". It's hard to say how he'd act in a post-pacifist setting, but I think it could be close to this awesome comic from creepyknees

And just my own headcanon-- I feel like a lot of the NPC kids talk about Papyrus and Undyne being cool and entertaining, while it's mostly adults that say Sans is a fun, likeable guy. So I think whatever charm Sans normally has, it's mostly lost on younger folks who just think he's a weird dude with lame jokes.

Avatar

Hi! I had a question, why do you give sans that concavity under his chin? Is that supposed to be a cleft chin? I have a cleft chin so I’m curious lol

Avatar

Oh! It's not intentionally a cleft chin, it's just the odd way I draw his jaw curving around even when the perspective probably doesn't call for it.

Although I do usually picture a squared off chin area rather than the canon round/non-chin from the sprite.

Losing my mind with just the possibility that funeral objects of monsters could possibly turn into copies of the real monsters in the dark world

I think other people have pointed it out already but I need to rant about it

Gerson is part of the special names list, so he has to be somewhat important, but he fell down years ago, so how come he’s so relevant that he’s in the list? His son isn’t in the list for example, but he is

There is also Rudy, and there is a high possibility that he might pass away at some point in the game, not only is he sick in deltarune but in undertale he is already gone. He also shows up in the special names list

I always thought it was interesting that monsters’s dust was spread over an object (in undertale at least), it was a nice detail, and it connected a lot to Flowey’s backstory later on, so it makes sense, it’s good lore

So… outside of the Dark World, Darkness are things like cards, computers, etc. And monsters funerals are different in deltarune, but the importance of objects is still there

Alvin implies something about his hammer as well…

So… there is a high chance that we might meet Gerson, and maybe even Rudy, in a Dark World, but is it really them or just a reflection of them? If Toby explores this idea I’ll truly lose my mind
