UPDATE - THIS SUMMER HE WON 1ST PLACE FOR DOLL CLOTHES AND JUDGES’ CHOICE AT THE DUTCHESS COUNTY FAIR. So I’m finally getting around to blazing him because I want you all to see him. They had him in a cabinet but put a table in front of it so I don’t think anyone but the judges got a gander. Gander! Gawk at my Molly! ^_^

In February 2020 I started a little project I’d been considering for a couple years to turn Synergy from Jem & The Holograms into Mollymauk Tealeaf from Critical Role. I finished it on 4/27/2022!

I own an entire set of Jem dolls and knew that the purple skinned and purple haired embodiment of the holographic computer would suit Molly perfectly. So I hit eBay and got a loose doll for about $10.

I made an outline of all the aspects of the project which would have me costuming for a doll, embroidering with a much smaller needle and thread I’d ever used, learning how to remove and repaint a doll, and sculpting with polymer clay. I also did some graphics work to make tiny tarot cards and put together tiny jewelry elements. I had all of the fabric and thread on hand, but had to purchase many items for the project such as the doll, 3d printed tiny scimitars, a paid of Jem boots, some faux leather, tiny buckles, acrylic paint and tiny brushes, Sculpey, and itty bitty teeny tiny sun and moon charms. I also wish I knew how to properly style and cut doll hair. I decided not to go whole-hog with the repaint, opting to just remove and simply repaint with acrylics.

Pulled the Mylar out of her hair… then started making clothes. I used Barbie patterns adjusted for the larger size of the Jem doll. The shirt (this was an early version) is terrible but I’m never taking the coat and jacket off again.

 I wish the horns were smaller and the tail a bit smoother, but it’s ok.

I made many, many mock-ups of the clothes before I was happy, but decided that once I had a tail and horns that were ok, I wouldn’t push it and went for it. I remember sewing the sleeves for the jacket while playing D&D on Roll 20 during the lockdown.

Teeny tiny stitches!

Thank goodness I got the McFarlan Molly before I hit this stage! It really helped to figure out the construction of the coat.

I love the relationship horror podcasts have with weird and creepy deer

But actually Vax deciding to not be upset that his sister got married without telling him because he’s going to die soon is just the most emotion ever like one of the last things she said to him before they parted ways for a YEAR was, “You better not get married without me being there and if you do I’ll kill you” (paraphrasing). He’s really choosing to use the very limited remaining days of his life to live it to the fullest, to love the hardest he can, and forgive and see the bright side of things that would’ve caused him to brood and get angry like mere months before. Liam O’Brien I love you and every single piece of yourself that you put into this character.
