Thinking back, they were foolish to think that they could ever defeat Uchiha Sasuke.
He was trapped, certainly, with all his escape routes cut off. Naruto blocked the front, Neji and Hinata from the sides, Sai above, and Sakura and Ino from the back. There was no way he could still escape.
However, he was also impossible to approach with Susanoo protecting him. At first, they thought that they were stuck in a stalemate, with neither side possessing any options. But the truth was, even outnumbered and cornered, Sasuke’s victory was inevitable; and he was well aware of it, if his arrogant smirk was any indication, as he only needed to attack.
Naruto was the only one fast enough to dodge Susanoo’s projectiles, the only one out of them who could take Sasuke head on, but he couldn’t do that while worrying about his teammates’ safety. In reality, they were the ones who were trapped. Sasuke only had to attack the others in order to incapacitate Naruto.
Their superior numbers, in this case, was a liability.
It became obvious soon enough – even Naruto, with his unfailing optimism, could see it. So he ordered a retreat, thinking that Sasuke would let them go if they did the same for him. Unfortunately, the Uchiha wasn’t feeling quite as generous. He acted quickly, pretending to agree to the truce then taking Sakura captive just as she passed by him to rejoin her teammates. In one move, he ensured that Naruto would have no choice but to stay and fight even if the odds were stacked heavily against them.
So there she was, encased in the tight grip of the man she loved, watching in abject horror as her teammates tried to dodge the malevolent chakra arrows that relentlessly rain down upon them – a helpless spectator to a merciless slaughter. Their attempt was an exercise in futility, she knew. Susanoo’s projectiles flew far too swiftly and were in seemingly endless supply. Soon, her teammates would tire. Soon, they would start dying. Sasuke would make sure of it. Sasuke would revel in it.
She hoped – prayed – that they would run away, escape. But she also knew with painful certainty that they wouldn’t. There was no way that her teammates would abandon her. But there was also no way that they would penetrate Susanoo’s perfect defense. They could barely even dodge Sasuke’s ruthless attack as it was, much less counter it.
‘It really is hopeless’, she thought. Even if her teammates dodged all of the chakra arrows, the moment they came close enough, they would still have to face Susanoo’s sword. Their only hope was to hold out until Sasuke ran out of chakra, but Sasuke was still at full stamina even after an hour of fighting. And since, there was simply no way to attack from the outside—
Then it hit her. There was no way to attack Sasuke from outside Susanoo, but from the inside—
It was all too simple. His arrogance would be the death of him. He had let her into his defenses, albeit accidentally. He was vulnerable to her, if not to anyone and anything else. It was clear to Sakura that Sasuke was only vaguely aware of her presence now. Each attack, though seemingly done with ease, still required his concentration. His grip on her had already gone slack, she only had to hit him with a chakra scalpel on a vital spot. It would have been perfectly easy.
She could save her team and stop this madman who was threatening their village and the entire shinobi world with one blow.
It had to be a fatal hit. Any less and she would risk missing out on her only chance to defeat him. Sasuke would never make the same mistake twice. He would probably kill her if she failed in her attempt – would probably kill her, in fact, if he had any inkling of what she was thinking.
Could she really kill Sasuke, her Sasuke-kun?
No— There shouldn’t even have been a question. She had to kill him. She had no choice. It was her duty as a kunoichi of Konoha. She owed it to her friends who were out there trying their best to stay alive. She owed it to Naruto who was risking his life to save her. She owed it to herself.
Would her heart allow it? Vaguely, she realized that she was crying. Shamefully, she knew that her tears weren’t for her teammates, but for Sasuke – always for Sasuke.
She loved him. She loved him. She loved him.
She loved him and she would kill him.
But just then, Naruto sent a Tailed Beast Ball hurtling towards Sasuke, requiring the raven-haired boy to relinquish his hold on her completely to concentrate on deflecting the attack.
It was time, she knew. There would be no better opportunity than this.
Breathing deeply, she molded chakra onto her palm, turned around to face him, and prepared to strike—
“Go ahead, Sakura.”, he said without looking at her.
It was first time he spoke to her directly since they entered battle. And like always, his voice sent jolts of electricity through her heart. Unbidden, more tears fell from her eyes. She looked at him then, she looked at Sasuke, noticed the beads of sweat that formed on his forehead, his furrowed brows, the expression of pure determination on his face as he willed Susanoo to deflect the attack, the grim set of his mouth – it was all so painfully familiar.
He was lost and broken and wrong but he was still her Sasuke-kun.
Her chakra flickering out of her hands as she held them up to cup his face.
“I love you Sasuke-kun. I still love you. So much.”
He looked at her then, finally giving her his full attention, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Then watch, Sakura – Watch what love does.”
He grabbed both her wrists with surprising gentleness and turned her around to face the battlefield. Sakura felt Sasuke resting his chin on her head, his arms moving to encase her firmly in an embrace; a mad mockery of the romance she sought after so desperately.
Seconds seemed to stretch into eternity as she helplessly watched Susanoo successfully deflecting the Tailed Beast Ball and sending it hurtling towards her teammates. With painful clarity, she saw Ino trembling, Neji shielding Hinata, Sai trying to run, and Naruto closing his eyes in resignation, the ring of black flames surrounding them. She saw it all. Impact. Explosion. Death.
