EVERY SINGLE DAY there are MILLIONS of characters in their late 20s who get falsely accused of being father figures to teenagers when in reality the description of "weird older cousin" or "step-sibling that moved out before you were born" is 1000000x more apt a description

on second thought, 03 al is still a much stronger character overall, and me saying i like fmab al’s personality more really just comes down to that he’s more inoffensive since he’s very understated and tends to act more like a supporting character than the deuteragonist like he is in 03. 

but 03 al really outshines fmab al. even between their shared moments and themes, 03′s emotional beats are stronger. for example, martel’s death and al’s survivor’s guilt which are present in both series: in 03, martel’s death is treated as extremely horrific for al, while in fmab it’s pretty much brushed off. and later, in 03 al has that same moment of “im sick of watching people die,” but it’s said in a quiet moment of reflection and despair, so it LATER comes back and explains his actions and him standing up for what he believes. but in fmab al’s “im sick of watching people die” comes at a moment where he can be the hero, at a moment of convenience. there’s no prior reflection, and hence, there’s no prior indication that deaths like martel actually had any profound effect on him because fmab says characters cant be emotionally vulnerable unless its a situation where they can look more badass than Human. 

and in what’s unique between the two als, 03 also outshines fmab there. because even at the expense of 03 al being more “annoying” like i complain about, he still has the same flaws as fmab al and yet is more interesting. he’s naive and overly trusting, he’s so patient that it sometimes makes him too passive in situations that require his conviction and action, and ironically he has moments of being the more emotionally detached brother leading him to be rather cold. however, none of these flaws have serious and/or lasting consequences for fmab al. they don’t get him into trouble (with the only major exception being him trusting barry the chopper but ill get to that in why it’s still stronger in 03). 

but 03 al is always paying for those same flaws. he constantly gets manipulated and tricked, he misses the obvious because he assumes the best in people and situations and so doesn’t think to make connections, his passive nature makes him indecisive and flaky even when it really counts and leads to him making an impulsive and selfish decision when he finally does get conviction, and his rationality (and seemingly apathy) in contrast to ed’s emotionally charged impulsivity actually gets a moment of justification where he says he CAN’T feel the same things ed can feel. 

his identity crisis is given more justification and weight as well. in fmab, al is just being stupid, but in 03, al is treated with seriousness and empathy, because how could he not question the nature of his reality when he can’t confirm himself or his memories with his senses? when he can’t feel the same emotions ed can feel without a body? these traits are pointed out to audience long before he has his identity crisis, giving us every reason to feel for al in this moment. to feel “oh yeah if i was in that situation id be going crazy” rather than “al you’re so stupid.” fmab al shows his flaw in being too trusting with barry, but there’s also little empathy for it. it’s a flaw, but it’s not a relatable flaw because in fmab’s case, what person would really believe barry? 

so yes, 03 al is more “annoying” and “dumber,” but he still is the more interesting, developed, dimensional, and relatable al when it comes down to comparing him to fmab’s characterization. 

hate how having a special interest in a character will turn u into a giggly little anime schoolgirl im like kicking my legs and squealing into a pillow and and blushing and smiling like an idiot and its like Oh yeah no this about a guy who should be in federal prison. yeah. yeah like unforgivable crimes

STOP TAGGING THIS WITH CHARACTERS WHOSE WORST CRIME IS THE MORAL EQUIVALENT OF TAX FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they need to be someone that chronically online twitter users will accuse you of being immoral for liking because what they did is so awful. i will not stand for this

if i have a had a nickel for every time my heart broke for a fictional pair of siblings where the older brother swore to protect his younger sister but death and tragedy ultimately separated them leaving the surviving person with unbridled guilt and also the older brother was voiced by taliesin jaffe, i’d have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
