i understand the appeal of publishing "fic with the serial numbers filed off" as original work but i also feel like. what makes something a good fic is at odds with what makes something a good original story.

a good fic is in conversation with a source text, it may give a character an interesting role, it may reinterpret or subvert the rules established in the canon universe, whatever. but like. its transformative by nature. whereas original stories - good ones, anyway - have their own internal, non-referrential sense of logic and rules. it can be in conversation with the genre writ large but it has to have internal substance that can stand alone. which fic inherently cant do.

I used to work for a trade book reviewer where I got paid to review people's books, and one of the rules of that review company is one that I think is just super useful to media analysis as a whole, and that is, we were told never to critique media for what it didn't do but only for what it did.

So, for instance, I couldn't say "this book didn't give its characters strong agency or goals". I instead had to say, "the characters in this book acted in ways that often felt misaligned with their characterization as if they were being pulled by the plot."

I think this is really important because a lot of "critiques" people give, if subverted to address what the book does instead of what it doesn't do, actually read pretty nonsensical. For instance, "none of the characters were unique" becomes "all of the characters read like other characters that exist in other media", which like... okay? That's not really a critique. It's just how fiction works. Or "none of the characters were likeable" becomes "all of the characters, at some point or another, did things that I found disagreeable or annoying" which is literally how every book works?

It also keeps you from holding a book to a standard it never sought to meet. "The world building in this book simply wasn't complex enough" becomes "The world building in this book was very simple", which, yes, good, that can actually be a good thing. Many books aspire to this. It's not actually a negative critique. Or "The stakes weren't very high and the climax didn't really offer any major plot twists or turns" becomes "The stakes were low and and the ending was quite predictable", which, if this is a cute romcom is exactly what I'm looking for.

Not to mention, I think this really helps to deconstruct a lot of the biases we carry into fiction. Characters not having strong agency isn't inherently bad. Characters who react to their surroundings can make a good story, so saying "the characters didn't have enough agency" is kind of weak, but when you flip it to say "the characters acted misaligned from their characterization" we can now see that the *real* problem here isn't that they lacked agency but that this lack of agency is inconsistent with the type of character that they are. a character this strong-willed *should* have more agency even if a weak-willed character might not.

So it's just a really simple way of framing the way I critique books that I think has really helped to show the difference between "this book is bad" and "this book didn't meet my personal preferences", but also, as someone talking about books, I think it helps give other people a clearer idea of what the book actually looks like so they can decide for themselves if it's worth their time.

Update: This is literally just a thought exercise to help you be more intentional with how you critique media. I'm not enforcing this as some divine rule that must be followed any time you have an opinion on fiction, and I'm definitely not saying that you have to structure every single sentence in a review to contain zero negative phrases. I'm just saying that I repurposed a rule we had at that specific reviewer to be a helpful tool to check myself when writing critiques now. If you don't want to use the tool, literally no one (especially not me) can or wants to force you to use it. As with all advice, it is a totally reasonable and normal thing to not have use for every piece of it that exists from random strangers on the internet. Use it to whatever extent it helps you or not at all.

What I Know Now

Using a powerful spell, Magnifico is able to go back in time to before everything went horribly wrong, at least as far as he's concerned. This time, he's determined not to lose control over the kingdom that should rightfully be his. But there's just so much the Wise King of Rosas still has to learn.

Chapter one is up! It's a Peggy Sue-style fic where the Peggy Sue is a Disney villain who doesn't realize he's the villain, at least not yet.

Will it show up in the tumblr tags? Probably not! Am I posting it anyway? Sure! Am I living up to my promise to chew on Magnifico like a gummy spider? Put him through the washing machine? Absolutely.

The Pinned Post

Hello! This is my fanwork-oriented blog, by which I mean almost exclusively fanfiction. You'll find some Portal (and Portal AU) stuff, Madoka, Red vs Blue, Transformers, and whatever else I stumble into liking.

Current Active Works

Their New Disasters: Long form sequel to Grief Science, a Portal-Madoka fusion AU I wrote some years ago. Returning to the universe and the characters should be fun, I hope. Ships will be all over the place. Updated monthly.

Red Team Orange Dragon Blues: Red vs Blue. Grif is alone on Iris, and something has turned him into a dragon. And Iris is a much livelier place than he thought. Grimmons, eventually. Updated when it updates, basically.

Recent Complete Works:

Sole Mourner: One shot, posted the day after Christmas. Implied m/m.

“He mourned Jacob Marley, whatever Jacob Marley was in life. It was a faint thought, a mild passing regret, but there is still power in such things.”

Destabilized Accumulation: Red vs Blue, multi-chapter. Post-Chorus Trilogy, Simmons is forced to confront his demons and his, uh, growing issues. Grimmons, m/m, goofy premise with angsty core.

I'm having a lot of trouble with posts on this tumblr not showing up in tags, so I made Cornet on AO3 for sharing my fanworks specifically. I will still use this blog to talk about writing but I'm going to start using cornetespoire as my "main" reblogging stuff blog again. Trying to reorganize a bit. Exiles stuff is still on Exiles tumblr.

Update: Well, stuff posted on that blog doesn't show up in tags either. Hmm. I contacted support. It's not a big deal but I would like to, you know, share my fanworks in the fandom tag where the fandom can find it fandomishly?

I realized I never posted these here on tumblr! 2020 did unspeakable things to my mind and body…I staggered away from lockdown with a whole pitch of how I would make an animated Cats adaptation. I got the whole thing up here *taps skull*—it would be Very Good. I can’t think about it too much lest I awaken my sleeping obsession…still want to finish Old Deut and Macavity one of these days.

Fun fact: The term "Jellicle Cat" is actually the cats’ mishearing of the term "Dear Little Cat" (this gives me much joy)

I want to see OCs. I want to see original works every day. I want to see people coming up with strange shit I'd never come up with. I want to see you go fucking nuts and transcribe your insanity into delicious visual feasts. I have no desire to see what I have seen before; I have already seen it. I now want to see your weirdest, most unhinged trash. I want it in my eyeballs. I want it in my ears. I want to feast upon the stuff that isn't marketable or franchiseable or keeping up with the trends. I want to see your deep gouges on the media landscape. I want your bizarre internals to become sandpaper on the eyeballs of the media illiterate. I want your weird take on a standard formula. I want to never see another another billion dollar multimedia cross promotion again. I want your bad art and your unpracticed sketching and the stuff you think nobody wants to see specifically because I am the art equivalent of touch starved. I live in a fascist hellscape from which the only escape is your bizarre tastes that do not live up to the idealized social media image of what it means to be a person.
