countdown to christmas day 22 of 24: little women (2019)

“I know they will be loving children to you, do their duty faithfully, fight their enemies bravely and conquer themselves so beautifully… that when I come back to them I may be fonder and prouder than ever of my little women.“

"Ollie always works." She agreed with a nod, immediately wrapping herself in a hug into his chest when he seated her in his lap. "He's the best like that."

She hugged him for a bit, but she couldn't stay still for long (even though she tried this time), so soon she was wriggling again.

"Can I watch some Bluey?" She asked.

"He really is," Steve hugged his daughter tightly and then set Ollie, the stuffed giraffe on her lap. Ronja was starting to get antsy so he loosened his embrace so she could climb down. "Bluey, huh?" He grinned and stood up from the chair. Now that he was a dad he was getting to experience all the kid shows and music. Some of it drove him nuts and some of it didn't, but it made her happy --- and if she was happy that so was he. "Yeah, you can put some Bluey on if you want. Would you like an apple juice and some goldfish crackers?"

She gave him a little kiss quickly pressed to his cheek before he set her down on the floor, happy that she had made him feel better, that her dad was smiling again. And then delighted when she was allowed to put the TV on.

"Yes, please!" She called, remembering about 'please', as she ran over to the couch and grabbed the remote, easily putting netflix on and finding Bluey episodes. It hadn't taken her long to learn how to operate the TV and all the various programs when delights such as Bluey and Paw Patrol were a reward.

“Hmmm. Maybe less soggy but still soggy.” She decided after a moment of thought on the topic of cereal, and she watched as he sat down and made his own meal, curious if he was really going to eat it with milk… and not mind the sogginess.

“Can we go to the ZOO again, please?” She asked, eyes big with hope and using her best polite voice and polite words like the doctors have taught her. “Can we see if the baby giraffe was born yet?” Last time they went it’s been her first time seeing any of those animals and she really wanted to see them all again, but giraffes and lions especially, and maybe polar bears too.

Steve spooned some of the cereal into his mouth and chewed it before swallowing. "Not too soggy. You should try it sometime." He smiled at his daughter and then picked his coffee up to have a sip.

She wanted to go to the zoo again? They had just been there last week, but her wide eyes and politeness were making it very hard to suggest they go somewhere else. "If that's what you'd like to do, sweetie. Maybe I should think about getting a membership so we can go whenever we want." Time was something he had now -- at least until Ronja was settled in and felt like this was her home, so he had taken a small step back from being a super hero. "So finish breakfast, clean up, we'll head to the zoo, and what do you think about getting lunch somewhere afterwards?"

"Yay!" She started eating quicker, excited at the prospect of going back to the ZOO. She loved animals and the ZOO was one of her favorite places.

"Oh, can we have McDonald's for lunch? Please, please, please?" She asked, some of her cereal scattering on the floor when she moved her spoon too energetically. She didn't bother with it though, instead focused on finishing her food quickly and drinking all her milk in almost one go too, excited about the ZOO.

“Here, you can have a snuggle with Ollie today.” She said, bringing her favourite and treasured stuffed giraffe to Steve to cheer him up. “He makes all the tears and sads go away.” @evolutionmastery

"Thanks, sweetie," Steve said forcing a smile when the little girl waved the giraffe in front of his face. His emotions were too deep to share with his daughter, she wouldn't even understand if he did. From now on though he would have to do a better job at keeping his sad, melancholy feelings hidden because he sure as hell didn't want to make Ronja worry. She had gone through so much already and finally she was in a stable home and felt safe and secure with him. Worry might make her scared. Steve took the stuffed animal into his hands and then picked her up and set her on his lap. "Look, it's working. Dad is already starting to feel much better," he said quietly before pressing a kiss to the side of her head.

"Ollie always works." She agreed with a nod, immediately wrapping herself in a hug into his chest when he seated her in his lap. "He's the best like that."

She hugged him for a bit, but she couldn't stay still for long (even though she tried this time), so soon she was wriggling again.

"Happy birthday!" Ronja exclaimed when she saw Steve come out of his bedroom, quickly sliding off the kitchen chair and running to him with a colorful card and a somewhat poorly wrapped gift. The card was entirely hand made by her, something she was very proud of. On the front, there was a picture of Steve in his Captain America outfit and holding the shield. On the inside, there was a picture of them together, in the ZOO, looking at giraffes and zebras. And above, in wonky letters since she was still only learning to write: Heppy Birday Dad!

"Do you wanna open it?" She asked eagerly, putting the gift in his hands and excited to see if he would like it. Sam helped he pick a set of colored pencils for Steve but she had wrapped it herself. @evolutionmastery

Steve cleared the day to celebrate his birthday with his daughter. Usually the Avengers threw him a big party but this year he wanted something a little more quiet. "Thank you, sweetheart!" he said with a smile as he took the card. A small chuckle fell from his lips when he saw the picture she drew and how she spelled some of the words. "I love it. I never had a better birthday card."

She handed him the gift and he took it. "I do want to open it!" he said as he carefully undid the wrapping paper. His eyes lit up when he saw the colored pencils. "This is perfect! I've been wanting to get a set of these." He set the case down on the table and scooped the little girl into his arms and lifted her high into the air. "This is turning out to be the best birthday ever." He kissed her forehead and then set her back down.

She squealed in delight when he lifted her and spun her around, laughing loudly until he set her down, and even then she kept on grinning, big and bright.

"They are lightfast." She informed him about the pencils, climbing onto the nearby chair to be taller as she stood next to him. "And that means when you draw things, we can put them up on the fridge or on the wall and the colors won't change!" She told him, something the lady at the shop taught her and Ronja was very excited to let Steve know just how good of a gift she had chosen for him.

Her unsure expression brightened up at his words, blue eyes looking up at him with surprise.

"I'll have it in a glass!" She said, excited that he let her do it her away and she slid off the chair and ran to get the glass herself, then poured it half full of milk, kneeling on the chair for better leverage. And she didn't even spill any of it! Happily, she started to eat the cereal dry, loving the crunch of it.

"No, thanks." She said over a mouthful, looking up to him again. "Are you having cereal too?"

He watched his daughter carefully pour the milk into a glass with a smile on her face. "Good job, Ronja," he praised her, nodding his head when she sat back down on the chair and began to eat the crunchy cereal.

"Yeah, I'll have a bowl, too." He grinned when she looked up at him. "But I like mine with milk in it. You eat it fast enough it doesn't have time to get soggy!"

He also got a cup of coffee for himself and then sat down next to her. "So...I thought we'd take a day to ourselves and do something fun. Would you like that?"

"Do we have to put milk over it...?" She asked, looking between the bowl of sweet cereal in front of her and Steve, her dad, who just came back to the table to give her the milk she had purposefully left in the fridge. She thought he maybe wouldn't notice, but he paid a lot more attention to her than doctor John and doctor Louise had.

"It makes them soggy..." She said, instead trying to convince him to let her eat the breakfast how she wanted it. After all, he'd told her again and again she could ask him for anything, and though she hadn't done so at first... Well, he's been very nice to her in the past weeks so she decided to try.

He was still trying to figure out this whole 'being a dad' thing. It was almost unreal to find out that he had a daughter. Not a daughter from another reality or a child whom he chose to call his daughter but an actual biological daughter. It had been so shocking at first but Steve wanted to do what was right and take care of her. He always wanted a family of his own but never thought it would actually happen.

"Well, milk usually goes on the cereal but if you really don't want to try it, I suppose you can just eat and drink them separate. You need some calcium from the milk though. It's good for your bones." Honestly, he didn't even think that was true but it was something that he grew up hearing a lot. "Can I get you anything else, Ronja?"
