I know this is fairly obvious and it’s probably been mentioned before, but Anya only really tries to be Damian’s friend (go for Plan B) once he shows his nice side to her.

At the start of the dodgeball chapter, Anya wants to earn a star for the mission (Plan A). When Damian comes along and Anya is reminded of the existence of Plan B, she straight up claims she “hates” him.

At this stage, since they’re all still new to school, Anya hasn’t quite given up on Plan A yet (not truly realising how hard it is for her to get a star), but even though befriending Damian can help with the mission and make her Pa happy (Anya’s main goal), Anya doesn’t do it. Because as she puts it, Damian’s mean to her. She isn’t incentivised by the mission.

To Anya, this affirms that Damian is the jerk she thinks he is, except this gets disproven very quickly when he sacrifices himself for her.

Anya is clearly shocked by Damian’s actions and says “are you nice?”. Anya also knows of Damian’s goal to impress his father and she knows he genuinely sacrificed something for her. Damian’s actions are in direct contrast to his jerkish thoughts of “I don’t care how many of the others get hit”. Anya starts to see him a new light. She even claims she will avenge him and calls him “Damian” instead of the usual Sy-on boy (this is not an important point because she does occasionally call him Damian iirc). Even though Damian later complains how he sacrificed himself for nothing, prompting Anya to go “you really are mean after all!”, at least Anya knows Damian is capable of kindness (sometimes).

The next chapters are about Anya getting her first star and Damain subsequently defending her, another “nice action”. When Becky unintentionally reminds Anya of Plan B, Anya is very enthusiastic about it. Because she thinks she can impress Damian.

Imo this shows that Anya doesn’t really “hate” Damian anymore. Even with the incentive of the mission, Anya didn’t want to befriend Damian because he was “always mean to her”. Well, he stops being mean to her for a bit, so she stops disliking him as much. Anya “allows” herself to befriend Damian because he can be nice. Later in the chapter, Anya is assertive and asks whether Damian has a dog, prompting her to start the whole dog friendship scheme.

So yes, Anya did choose to befriend Damian and it’s not “just for the mission”. She only chose to really go for the friendship scheme (instead of completely ignoring it like she did at the beginning of Ch 15) after Damian proved he wasn’t as bad as she thought he was ^_^

What's kind of hilarious to me in hindsight about Damian's crush on Anya is that it didnt actually start when Anya sucker punched him.

He actually first took notice of her when she was staring at him during the entrance ceremony, trying to think of how to befriend him for the mission. And his immediate thought is that she must have a crush on him (stones and glass houses much?).

And then later, when the kids are being led on tour and Damian is being swarmed by other students, he starts up the conversation with her specifically after spotting her among his classmates.

To note. At this point Anya has not said a single word to Damian, she's just been staring at him from afar. But even with that he's already focusing in on her.

All it took was one punch and he was down for the count in more ways than one.

As Yor was thinking, a visual depiction also followed in Anya's mind. First, kill, then butcher deers with a sharp knife close at hand. Anya was scared imagining the specifics of the "tomato festival" (bloodbath), and felt a chill run over her.

Loid smiles looking at Yor, whose eyes are widened in surprise by this "camping" style.

The forest the children are preparing to camp in is also owned by the school, to protect students from kidnapping attempts. "That's true. Then, my heart is at ease."

After hearing Loid explain in detail, Yor let out a sigh of relief. She enters the kitchen with a smile:

"I'll grab some sweets for us to eat!"
