What made you decide to do some writing conferences across the US?

Avatar

Dear iamthewithintown,

Failure, honestly.

I co-taught a series of seminars across the US last year with Court Stevens. For months, we worked our asses off writing every word of that workshop— eight hours of content, carefully designed to be as digestible and broad and bolstering as possible. Every word was crafted to be useful. I’m proud of what we did, and I loved meeting those students … but I also don’t think it was the best I could do. I felt as if I’d taught people how to brainstorm, how to be creative, how to start to write … but not how to follow it through, and definitely not like I’d taught them how to write a Stiefvaterish novel, which is what I think someone comes to a Stiefvater seminar to learn.

This year I had the chance to teach a shorter seminar — five hours — in Edinburgh, and as I was working on the content, I remembered something I was told before I wrote a talk for the SCBWI (Society of Children’s Books Writers & Illustrators) conference one year. I was feeling very psyched out before giving this talk, quite unclassed, because I’d be talking to a room full of well-published authors. They told me: don’t teach them how to write. Teach them how you write.

So that’s what I did in Edinburgh.

I didn’t tell them how to do it. I just told them how I do it.

And was it the best seminar I’ll teach? No. I hope I’ll get better at it each time I try, just like I hope each of my novels will be better than the last.

It felt pleasant and useful. Instead of trying to be the end-all-be-all-source, I felt like I was one building block in a whole playset those writers would eventually assemble.

That felt more right.

(NYC & Seattle sold out in hours, but there are still some seats in LA and Austin)(or you can wait until 2020, when maybe I’ll like what I’m teaching even better than this year.

urs,

Stiefvater

TRC fandom, particularly white TRC fandom: when you reply to these screenshots of mine with STIEFVATER MAKE RONAN BLACK YOU COWARD, and none of you also say STIEFVATER MAKE NOAH BLACK YOU COWARD, STIEFVATER MAKE GANSEY BLACK YOU COWARD, etc, it’s time to ask yourself why you think the character you wouldn’t hand a baby to is black and the character you want to love and protect is white. It behooves all of us to ask ourselves if our gut feelings are our own or if we’re sliding into a trench built for us by hundreds of years of storytelling and media coverage and stereotypes.

I’m a different creator now than I was in 2011*, and I’m pumped to do what I can to make sure the TRC show is a more diverse place than the TRC book series, but I’m not here for underlining stereotypes that get people killed every week.

*and I hope that I‘ll be a different creator yet again in another 8 years

(also my role in this is writerly, not in casting, so throwing yourself upon my mercy in this department is largely futile anyway).

My phone’s camera accidently started doing a vertical panorama. Decided to give it a go and got this really cool pic!

Dang

“Do you love the color of fire?”

Sometimes I forget everything is made from bits of stuff that the stars are made of, and this makes me feel warm inside.

you know what trope pisses me off the most? when the protag is pointing a gun at somebody and they’re like “you won’t do it. you’re too good” and the person holding the gun is like oh shit i am and they slowly lower the gun while the other person laughs. WHAT THE FUCK. if i were there, and somebody told me “you won’t do it” i would immediately shoot them dead without hesitating. who are you to tell me what i wont do. musty bitch
