fucked up how cooking and baking from scratch is viewed as a luxury…..like baking a loaf of bread or whatever is seen as something that only people with money/time can do. I’m not sure why capitalism decided to sell us the idea that we can’t make our own damn food bc it’s a special expensive thing that’s exclusive to wealthy retirees but it’s stupid as hell and it makes me angry

bread takes like max 4 ingredients counting water and sure it takes a couple hours but 80% of that is just waiting around while it does the thing and you can do other things while it’s rising/baking plus im not gonna say baking cured my depression bc it didn’t but man is it hard to feel down when you’re eating slices of fresh bread you just made yourself. feels like everything’s gonna be a little more ok than you thought. it’s good.

bread is amazing and it’s also been sold to us as something really hard to make? Every time I tell someone I made a loaf of bread I get reactions like “you made it yourself???” and “do you have a bread machine then?” I haven’t touched a bread machine in probably 10 years. You CAN make your own bread, folks, and it’s actually pretty cheap to do so. I believe the most expensive thing I needed for it was the jar of yeast. It was about $6 at the grocery store and lasted me MONTHS (just keep it in the fridge.) The packets are even cheaper. destroy capitalism. bake your own bread.

You can also make your own yeast by making a sourdough starter, so that cuts cost even more.

But you have to feed the starter daily/weekly and that means it grows quickly, but there are tons of recipes online for what to do with your excess starter. Cookies, pretzels, crackers, pancakes, waffles, you name it!!

Make it even easier - “No-Knead Bread”. All YOU do is mix the ingredients together and wait until it’s time to heat the oven. The yeast does all the rest.

Here’s @dduane’s first take on it and the finished product. We’ve made even more photogenic batches since.

Kneading is easy as well; either let your machine do it, or if you don’t want to or don’t have one, get hands-on. It’s like mixing two colours of Plasticine to make a third. Flatten, stretch, fold, half-turn, repeat - it takes about 10 minutes - until the gloopy conglomeration of flour, yeast, salt and water that clings to your hands at the beginning, becomes a compact ball that doesn’t stick to things and feels silky-smooth.

Here’s what before and after look like.

My Mum used to say that if you were feeling out of sorts with someone, it was good to make bread because you could transfer your annoyance into kneading the dough REALLY WELL, and both you and the bread would be better for it.

Then you put it into a bowl, cover it with cling-film and let it rise until it doubles in size, turn it out and “knock it back” (more kneading, until it’s getting back to the size it started, this means there won’t be huge “is something living in here?” holes in the bread), put it into your loaf-tin or whatever - we’ve used a regular oblong tin, a rectangular Pullman tin with a lid, a small glass casserole, an earthenware chicken roaster…

You can even use a clean terracotta flowerpot.

Let the dough rise again until it’s high enough to look like an unbaked but otherwise real loaf, then pop it in the preheated oven. On average we give ours 180°C / 355°F for 45-50 minutes. YM (and oven) MV.

Here’s some of our bread…

Here’s our default bread recipe - it takes about 3-4 hours from flour jar to cutting board depending on climate (warmer is faster) most of which is rise time and baking; hands-on mixing, kneading and knocking-back is about 20 minutes, tops, and less if using a mixer.

Here ( or indeed any of the other pics) is the finished product. This one was given an egg-wash to make it look glossy and keep the poppy-seeds in place; mostly we don’t bother with that or the slash down the middle, but all the extras were intentional as a “ready for my close-up” glamour shot.

I think any shop would be happy to have something this good-looking on their shelf. We’re happy to have it on our table.

Even if your first attempts don’t work out quite as well as you hope, you can always make something like this

can we have more posts like this in future please? this is really useful and could help those who are struggling

Does anyone know how to adjust recipes for baking on a high altitude? More yeast? Less yeast? Internet opinions are conflicting. Made pizza dough according to an adjusted recipe, edible, not so good :-(

the reason i’m still on tumblr.

I forgot I was planning to make bread tonight and then this post cropped up at exactly the right time to make bread and have it be ready for dinner

Bedridden Witch: The Setup

A revamp of my very first bedridden witch post, which now pales in comparison to all my themed ones! This post is all about setting up your bedroom/space to aid in witchcraft while bedbound. See my other bedridden posts for ideas on performing witchcraft while bedridden (click here!).

The Bed:

Pillow:

  • Pillowcase color correspondences
  • Sigils in pillowcase
  • Scented (or not) sachet under pillow
  • Crystals under pillow or (small ones) in pillowcase
  • Tarot cards under pillow

Mattress:

  • Sheets/bedding color correspondences
  • Sigils under mattress
  • Spray with scented mist (I have one from a local lavender farm)
  • Wash with scented (or not) detergent that has specific correspondences/components

Under the bed:

  • Tie a sachet underneath the bed
  • Place/secure a physical tie for your wards under each corner–if you spend a lot of time in bed, reinforcing the wards specifically on your bed can be helpful
  • Keep a crate/drawer of frequently used witchy supplies you can easily access; crystals, herbs, divination tools, spell components, etc.
  • Keep a stack of witchcraft books you want to read

Bedside table:

  • Store supplies: crystals, books, sprays, etc.
  • A surface for candles; flame or electric, or a Himalayan salt lamp. Wax melters are also fantastic.
  • A surface for a EO or reed diffuser
  • Keep a charging board there for the crystals you use
  • Keep your favorite divination tools nearby
  • A nice spot to keep your grimoire/journal
  • Create a small altar
  • Spell jars

Walls:

Hang….

  • Herb and/or spell sachets
  • Artwork that relates to your craft
  • Devotional work/prayers
  • Star and moon phase charts
  • Witches ladder
  • Herb/flower/plant garlands
  • Plants to dry
  • Fairy/twinkle lights along the top of the walls
  • Physical tie for your wards in each corner
  • A hanging altar

Window/Windowsill:

  • Curtain color correspondences
  • Hang a rainbow prism to let the sunlight scatter through your space
  • Place some houseplants or herbs on the windowsill
  • Hang windchimes outside
  • Hang bird feeders outside
  • Place a rain gauge outside

Other:

  • Decorate with seasonal things (flowers, leaves, paper snowflakes, etc.)
  • Keep jars of the different elements and/or their correspondences (water, earth, air, fire)
  • Keep spell bottles nearby.
  • Having a bed tray (typically used for food) can make a great working surface
  • Technology can also help tie everything together: ambiance tracks, videos of things like a fire crackling, snow falling, a stream, a forest, etc.
  • This post remains fairly neutral/vague, but designing your space with a certain theme can influence your craft!

I woke up this morning to find my home surrounded in a really deep fog. It’s been ages since I’d last seen such an eerie fog, but I was super excited about it! I quickly got dressed and took my dog out for a walk through the woods behind my house, and it was amazing!! Walking back I also stumbled upon what I think was a Red Kite flying above. It was hard to see it clearly through all the fog but it hovered right above to have a good look at us, so I was able to see it’s silhouette pretty well! • #folksscenery #countrysideliving #slowliving #seekinspirecreate #aseasonalshift #gowildlyandslow #ofwhimsicalmoments #the_gentle_manifesto #folklife #findyourwild #folkwitch #cornishwitch #traditionalwitch #natureandnourish #whimsicalwonderfulwild #embracingtheseasons #greenwitch #witchesofinstagram — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2qmZuTV

Happy December!! This is one of my favourite months since it’s so cosy and festive! Happy Lughnasadh/Lammas to those in the Northern Hemisphere, and Happy Imbolc to all in the Southern Hemisphere! 🌾💕 Truthfully I’ve always struggled to connect to the Sabbat of Lughnasadh, though I am fine with Imbolc! I’m not sure why that is, perhaps it’s because I can more easily recognise the seasonal changes of Imbolc compared to Lughnasadh? Do you struggle to connect to any of the Sabbats? I’ve heard that some people create their own personal Wheel of the Year and I really love the idea of that! 💕 #folksscenery #countrysideliving #slowliving #seekinspirecreate #aseasonalshift #gowildlyandslow #ofwhimsicalmoments #the_gentle_manifesto #folklife #exploretocreate #postcardplaces #findyourwild #culturetrip #stayandwander #folkwitch #cornishwitch #traditionalwitch #natureandnourish #whimsicalwonderfulwild #embracingtheseasons #visitbritain #cornwall #cornwallcoast #cornwalllife #visitcornwall — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Zpv67N

It’s been a little while since I’ve read with Lenormand cards and I definitely feel rusty! I normally read with Tarot but it feels so nice to use other systems too. “In the folklore of the West Country we find the concept of the ‘Trod’, a green pathway along which the faeries move at the four quarter points of the year (the liminal gaps in between the seasons.) The Faery Rade can be seen as a stream of unearthly lights floating along the Trod at these times. To be caught upon the track when they are hovering always results in the individual being caught-up and 'taken’ out of themselves by the Host.”

Under the Garden Moon: Woodland Whimsy

I love the idea of making a witchy patchwork quilt. Each patch could represent a spell or it could be covered in protection and comfort sigils. You could tuck herbs or scraps of paper behind each patch and then have an epic witchy blanket 😍

20 Tips to being a Safe Witch

Altar Safety

  • When burning anything always keep a glass of water near you, unless you are working with burning oils, then keep a fire extinguisher or baking soda on hand.
  • When working with essential oils(EO), do not burn them they are highly flammable
  • Never leave anything burning unattended, be it a burn bowl, candle, incense. DON’T LEAVE IT!
  • Please remove anything flammable such as paper or string from the candle, it will ignite and you will be alarmed.
  • Make sure that what you’re burning your candle in is fire safe, metal and cast iron are good bets. Do NOT burn in a glass, if you have to put it out and dump water on it, it will explode.
  • Make sure you tie back loose hair and don’t have any floppy sleeves or necklaces to get in the way.
  • When putting out a candle it is best to use a candle snuffer and do not use water.
  • Don’t burn kitchen sage, it gives off a toxic smoke. Not something you wanna inhale.

Essential Oil Safety

  • Please, please dilute them properly. I have a chemical burn scar I can never get rid of due to undiluted cinnamon bark oil. The proper dilution is one drop per teaspoon.
  • Never ingest EO, there are some that are now generally recognized as safe by the FDA, but the quality of EO are not regulated. Who knows what a bad quality EO could do to your internal organs, not something I wanna test.
  • Essential Oils are photosensitive, meaning they deteriorate in light store them in a dark area to prevent them from spoiling.
  • DO NOT put them near on your skin and get in the sun or a tanning bed, especially citrus oils, they will blister.
  • Water will not dilute essential oils, only other oils(canola, olive, sweet almond, olive will all dilute). If you want to use them in a bath it is one drop per a teaspoon of oil.
  • Please seek medical attention if anything seems off after using EO, they seem harmless but can be very dangerous
  • Pets can be very sensitive to essential oils(particularly cats) and it is almost impossible to cover all my bases here. The sources provided below have some great resources.
  • Always go by the scientific name, German and Roman chamomile are very different products.

Kitchen Magic Safety

  • Wear shoes if you’re doing anything, I nearly lost a toe the other day cause I dropped a knife. I got lucky I was wearing boots.
  • Wear correct clothing, and tie back hair. No matter if you have a gas, electric or induction stove, I’ve caught a lab coat sleeve on fire thanks to a torch while making a creme brulee.
  • Use your knives correctly, learn about the pinch grip and use the correct knife for the job. Using a paring knife for chopping potatoes is asking for trouble. There are tons of videos online, I like the ones from Alton Brown and Jamie Oliver.
  • As a side note use sharp knives, a blunt knife will do more damage than a sharp one.
  • Don’t leave knives in the sink, someone could begin to wash dishes and cut themselves.
  • Watch the steam. Steam can give a worse burn than dry heat, open pot lids away from you and don’t stick your face and phalanges in steam.
  • Don’t leave food products unattended.
  • Use your damn pot holders, they protect you and your counters.
  • Store raw meat on the lowest shelves, and never store cooked meat on the same shelf
  • Wash your hands before, wash your hands after handling raw meats, wash your hands after.
  • Don’t leave food that is meant to be cold or hot out for more than 2 hours, this is to decrease foodborne illness.
  • When using the store turn handles in, to keep yourself from bumping them off the stove.
  • Cook meats to proper temps(there is a chart in the sources)
  • If you are using herbs be sure to use kitchen grade herbs, those that are not kitchen grade are not held up to the same purity standards and could have more pesticide residue.

Herbal Safety

  • Please be aware a lot of herbs can work against prescription medications, or should only be taken in very specific doses( St. John’s Wort I’m looking at you.) Check in with your doctor or a licensed herbalist or naturopath before ingesting herbs.

Crystal Safety

  • Identify your crystals, some are water solvent some are not and it matters
  • Some that aren’t safe in water include malachite and selenite. They have copper and if aren’t sealed they can become toxic. There is no way to know for sure if it was sealed or not keep -ite crystals dry as a good rule of thumb.
  • Some crystals fade in sunlight like rose quartz, amethyst and citrine, in order to prevent fading try cleansing them with sound, flower petals, moonlight and energy.
