Reblog for a larger sample size!

No "show results", if you're not a fanfic writer just be patient.

I saw a post about an anon saying it was embarrasing to have an ao3 account in your 30s (it's absolutely not), so I want to do a poll and see what the age range actually is.

Stop putting DNI on your tags and stop bringing shipping discourse into AO3

AO3 hid the story and asked OP to remove the tag (the fanfic is not even removed) due to the inflammatory tag. That's deserved. AO3 is not a social media for people to fight over ship and chronically online discourse. It's a library. If people keep bringing DNI and discourse into AO3 it'll make the place toxic for writers and reader.

What are you trying to accomplish with putting DNI? Do you think people actually care about DNI? No, it's just making you looking like an asshole doing this

Also AO3 was founded by a Wincest and Thorki shipper. Astolat made AO3 because FF net and other sites keep purging nsfw fanfic. AO3 is literally made for problematique shipper that op don't like.

Then OP doing this? For what? People want to enjoy reading their fanfic not seeing DNI and online discourse on AO3. I hate using the word virtue signaling as it's often used to demean progress but this is what a real virtue signaling looks like 🤦🤦‍♀️

(I bet op wrote more inflammatory tags on their fic other than 'proshitter DNI get a life' because it take a lot to get your story hidden or removed)

Louder for the people in the back.

AO3 IS A PROSHIP SPACE

If you don't want to see pro shipping stuff then don't go into proship spaces.

if a character means enough to me i will truly never stop thinking about them. i just retire them into a little back room in my brain and periodically bring them out to stare at them under a little light

Unusual Fic-Specific Asks for Authors

Send me one of my fics + one of the following:

  • Perspective Flip: I’ll write a scene from [that fic] from another character’s point-of-view
  • BTS: I’ll write a DVD commentary about my personal favorite passage from [that fic]
  • For Want of a Nail: Send me a minor detail to be changed (i.e., Character A chooses blue instead of red, Characters B and C swap places in one scene) and I’ll tell you how [that fic] would be different
  • Time After Time: Send me a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of [that fic], or sometime in the past before the story started, and I’ll tell you what happened then
  • The Million Dollar Question: Ask me any random question, big or small, about off-screen events in [that fic] and I’ll answer it!

Rashad walks up and down the dismal line of conscripts, holding back a sigh. Though the crown has sent for every able bodied man between the ages of eighteen and forty to report for duty, he might whittle three hundred from this crowd -- if he's lucky.

Wars have been won with far less, he reminds himself -- but not against German guns. This lot looks like they rolled out of haystacks and alleyways with scythes and rusted swords from the Napoleonic wars a hundred years previous. When Cordonia was a force to be reckoned with.

"Pathetic!" Rashad tosses his coat on the chaise lounge, throwing his hands up when his two remaining officers, Beaumont and Levine, stare at him. They've reconvened to an upstairs office of the barracks to report their findings. Levine, leaning heavily on a cane and already sporting a wooden leg, has been promoted to Corporal Sargent, and will stay behind in Cordonia to train the raw conscripts as they trickle in.

"He sends me men so crippled from the factories and slums that they can't lift a rifle, and boys barely off their mothers' teats!" Rashad runs a careless hand through his dark hair. "Bowlegged bastards he sends me! Does the king think nothing of my reputation with our allies?"

"Surely it's not as bad as all that, sir." Levine pulls the curtain back to look down at the field where the recruits are milling and makes a face. "I see what you mean. But begging your pardon, General, things have been bad in the provinces for a long time, and even more wretched in the city. I'm surprised we even got a thousand able-bodied conscripts at all."

Rashad uncorks a flask of whiskey from his pocket and takes a long pull. "Goddamnit, Levine, this isn't the time or place for a lecture. I've had to put down more rebellions in the past five years than -”

"I say, what's that?" Beaumont points through the window, and Rashad joins him and Levine at the glass.

A plume of black smoke has risen in the north, just over the tree line. Whatever it is, it's coming in rapidly. The recruits begin shouting, and Rashad pulls up the window, leaning out to see better in the frosty morning. His patience is rewarded when a line of steppe ponies come thundering over the hill, men in furs armed to the hilt with swords and pistols. "My God, it's the tribes from the mountains!"

Two motorbikes roar out in front of the formation of horses, and Rashad lets the window fall, turning to Beaumont and Levine, who are staring slack jawed at the spectacle. "We're saved!

Valax is overhyped. She has mediocre writing and is frankly kind of forced considering how heavily the plot centers her and assumes I like her while she's not my LI. I would have liked to have more focus on Mal and Imtura rather than someone new who I'm forced to care about and have like no choice to evade. I also don't like that it was default for her to kill the Empress, there should have been at least a choice to have MC do it.

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

  • Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.
  • Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.
  • In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.
  • In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:
I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.
  • In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.
  • Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

NOTE: All of the above also applies to Amazon products featuring stolen artwork, etc., so fan artists should check too!

UPDATE: Plush Books still exists on Amazon and on Goodreads under the pseudonym "J.D. Geraghty" where the fanfics are also listed. They also have a list of cookbooks that are without a doubt AI written (the descriptions for the books are repetitive nonsense so god forbid what exists inside).

From what I can see on Amazon, most of the stolen fanfics have become "Unavailable." This entity likely operates under more than one name, so it isn't safe to assume crisis averted. Numerous bad actors are posting AI written works to Amazon, which just means plagiarism slurry with a side of potential danger (like the autogenerated mushroom identification books).

There have been a couple of posts going around about how smut writers have the challenge of keeping a sex scene interesting when there's only a few different actions and a few different body parts to talk about

And yes, funny jokes about writing, but when I see posts like these I want to scream

If you feel like the sex scene you're writing is repetitive, no number of synonyms for "thrust" will help you. Synonyms for "cock" or "cunt" will REALLY not help you.

Sex scenes are character studies as much as they are action scenes. What are the characters' frameworks for what they're doing? Emotions, thoughts, specific physical sensations. If there are metaphors, do the metaphors make sense with the characters' experiences/the story's theme's/the setting? Is the sex scene completing a character arc, even a small one? Is there a character arc within the sex scene itself, even a small one?

A really good sex scene is specific and grounded to the physicality, emotions, and thoughts of the characters involved. Even if it's a PWP!

It's been said that the largest sex organ is the brain, and this is not a joke, especially when we're talking about the medium of the written word!
