The stigma of self-inserts is so harmful to the creative process. Relax. Admit it. Everything you make is derivative of yourself, always, no exceptions. You can turn the mirror into tinier and tinier shards or you can make it as big as you want to reflect as much as you want. At the end of the day it's always going to show you inside of it. Pretending otherwise is stupid.

It doesn't matter how hard you try to point the mirror at something else. At the end of the day you are the one holding the mirror up. You define what you create, even if it is in defiance and opposition. The single common denominator in all your art and all your designs will always only ever be you. Stop believing in the same creative advice you learned when you were 12 that taught you to be terrified of the ultimate dishonor and shame of "Liking a setting so much you want to live inside of it".

If a friend admitted to you they were scared they were uncreative for making a self-insert (and daring to enjoy it, even), would you agree with them that they were a hack and should be ashamed at themselves? If you wouldn't then why are you pretending that it's different somehow when you do it? You aren't special. Stop acting like it's okay to beat yourself up because it's you.
