hey good news

there's a specifically designated role in the naked mole rat ecology for "guy who runs off into the wilderness and fucks their way into a stranger's house"

Y'all have no idea how absurdly strange naked mole rats are as creatures They're cold-blooded mammals that live in a eusocial structure with a queen and drones, similar to ants, bees, termites and no other mammal on the planet. They barely need to breathe, with a respiration rate low enough to let them thrive in burrows with 2% oxygen, and survive with 0 oxygen whatsoever for about 20 minutes with zero lasting effects.

They live for over 30 years, which is absurdly long for a rodent, don't grow frail with age, and are basically immune to cancer because their telomeres just never shorten.

Naked Mole Rats are rodents that attempted to evolve into bugs, failed, and unlocked the secret to immortality in the process.

If you dare come at me about banning straws, I will throw you into the sun cannon. I’m disabled, I’m crippled, I need disposable plastic straws, and all those pricey ridiculous alternatives aren’t working as well. Plastic straws were invented for the disabled.

Way to shit all over a vital access need because you think straws are worse than corporate greed.

We all care about the turtles, the seals, the oceans, obviously. Notice how the easiest thing to yell about was something that would barely affect anything but appealed heavily to emotional discourse.

The disabled community is huge, and it can be joined by anyone. Most of those As Seen On TV products were invented for us. Society still mocks us and ignores us, and often outright harms us in multiple ways.

Communicate better. Listen better. But stop putting us out in the cold because you are inconvenienced by our simplest needs.

Straws aren’t killing the planet, its animals, or people. They’re a microscopic fraction of an iota of a percentage of the problem. You want to do something? Ban plastic fishing nets. Anything else is just a hollow feel-good gesture at the expense of real living disabled people.

i have an environmental degree and i’ve been saying this since this straw ‘debate’ started: its all a tactic by those in power to distract people’s attention from bigger issues such as fishing waste. don’t fall for it. and don’t be a dick to disabled people who need straws to make their lives easier.

“Paper straws.” “Oh you mean a practical joke in sraw form”

That’s the best analogy. Thank you.

There are single-use plastics that don’t need to exist (don’t kill me, let me finish, please). Spices are the most obvious to me—yes, a lot of spices need to be finished off before they expire because otherwise they’re not as potent/don’t taste as good, but salt? Ground pepper? Dried onion? There are other shelf-stable spices that are good for YEARS—slap a best-by label on each batch, put it in a bulk dispenser, and have customers write it on a sticker and put it on a reusable bottle. Customers who care will do so, customers who think “it all tastes the same” won’t but won’t be bothered. Sell reusable bottles or let customers bring their own containers and sell by weight. A few isolated places do this (Winco comes to mind), but very few.

But some stuff can’t be reused, or can technically be reused but it’s really not safe (for example, syringes). We need to focus on things that do not impact QoL, and stop throwing disabled people to the wolves.

Genuine question,I feel like there must be something obvious that I’m missing: what disability prevents one from using a paper straw?

Some people have allergies to wood pulp. Any organic material will have this issue, unfortunately, and people with the kinds of disabilities severe enough to need straws almost certainly have comorbidities such that anything potentially triggering to the immune system could be a problem. As some examples consider chemo patients, organ transplant recipients, and people with autoimmune disorders.

Paper straws also dissolve, which can cause problems for people who need to drink more slowly to avoid choking (there are a TON of disorders where this is a problem), and people with Parkinson’s, some forms of cerebral palsy, and similar conditions may need a straw that bends, which paper cannot do. People with Alzheimer’s struggle to drink and may reject an unfamiliar kind of straw because they can’t process new information, and low-functioning/high support needs autistic people may require assistance drinking but find that paper straws are a Bad Texture, and thus avoid them to the point of dehydration.

@thebibliosphere has a fantastic chart on the different kinds of straws and what the pros and cons of each are for disabled people, and the reality is, only plastic ticks the boxes that cover everyone, and some straws are simply impractical for daily use (figure out how to carry a glass straw in a purse!). (Joy, if you see this, I don’t remember a single stitch of text from that post to look it up on your blog, could you do me a solid and share the link?)

Also aren’t paper straws like, not gluten free? Or at the very least they trigger people who have a gluten intolerance/celiac/similar things (I know I’ve seen ‘not gluten free’ come up before as an issue with, some kind of not plastic straw before). So like, that’s ANOTHER big problem there.

I think you’re thinking of a similar type of biodegradable straw that’s made of wheat something-or-other. I know the one you’re talking about, the details are just failing me at the moment. It’s not paper, but it’s marketed along the same lines.

The glue used on some paper straws uses wheat, so they are not guaranteed to be gluten-free either.

And I’ll do you one better, here’s Jessica’s video and the straw ban:

And here’s the chart:

Apologies for the lack of image description, I’m on mobile and my crippled hands hurt.

I will point out that I know some people who are allergic to disposable plastic straws (if having a mast cell disease has taught me anything, it’s that your body can develop a reaction to anything) but as you can see from the chart, disposable plastic straws are the most allergen-friendly next to glass.

Unfortunately, glass is not safe or accessible for many disabilities (my own included) so disposable plastic straws remain a vital necessity for disabled people.

"I think Pacific Rim is unrealistic now because instead of everyone banding together to defeat COVID, the governments just gave up and abandoned everybody-"

Are you kidding me? Pacific Rim 100% predicted this kind of thing. That's literally what the Pacific Perimeter Program was about. Once the PPDC decided fighting kaiju was too expensive, they just gave up and chose to ignore the problem by putting it behind a big wall. Pacific Rim is literally about the people who were abandoned by the institutions that were supposed to protect them and kept on trying anyway.

isnt it crazy how the term for a person's attraction is "sexuality" and how that is emblematic of society's narrow focus on sex as a primary reason for a relationship's existence lol anyway fuck allonormativity and amatonormativity

It is so so important to show that queer people have always existed and are allowed to live long, happy lives. Young queer people–especially those in conservative areas–need to know that being queer is not a death sentence. Despite the many struggles we have faced, throughout history there have always been queer lives filled with joy and love. and you will find yours.

What’s everybody’s most useless skill? If you show me any picture of Godzilla I can tell you exactly which Godzilla suit it is and who was wearing it.

What about this one

This is from Godzilla Minus One and it’s CGi. No suit actor involved in this movie (but the big Godzilla head in the water was a practical effect).

I welcome anyone to challenge me on this

How about this one??

Oh shit now this is a challenge! I’m 100% sure that the suit is the SoshingekiGoji suit, but this suit was used in like 4 different movies, so the real challenge is figuring out which movie this is.

I’m pretty sure this shot is from Godzilla Destroy All Monsters (the first movie that this suit was used in), because of the lack of wear and damage to the suit.

And we know that Godzilla is being played by Haruo Nakajima in this shot because of which movie this is (but it’s also extremely obvious based on Godzillas posture)

That is:

A: 100% correct

B: Incredibly hot

A challenge from my friend!

This is KiryuGoji (the first one) played by Tsutomu Kitagawa

I really like this one! At first glance it looks like it could be a Heisei era suit, but this is one of the KiryuGoji suits from Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla Tokyo S.O.S!

The spines are the dead giveaway for this suit! They have the same shape as MireGoji but without the purple tint that we see in the image below. We only ever saw this style of spine in the Millennium era films.

The only other suit with the millennium era spines in this color is the FinalGoji suit. We can rule out this being FinalGoji by comparing FinalGojis face to the one in the picture.

KiryuGoji has larger eyes and the whites of his eyes are more visible. FinalGoji (on the right) has more prominent ears, and you can’t see the whites of his eyes.

Here’s the thing though, there are actually 2 KiryuGoji suits. The second suit looks a lot like the first one, but it had a big scar on its chest. The lack of scar on this suit means that this is a picture from Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, and not from Tokyo SOS, and that is how we know that this is the first KiryuGoji suit.

Oh I've got this really hard one. Can you figured out where it game from ?

I sure can! It’s a fan design made by tumblr user @yagamimi-aka-mimi and it’s one of my favorite Godzilla designs that I’ve ever seen!

also hey are you brainrotted enough to know which suit this one is lol

Oh!! Oh!! I know this one!! It looks kinda like GyakushuGoji but this is the T-Rex suit from “The Volcano Monster” (I think it’s called GigantisGoji).

I mainly know this because I’m familiar with this photo. (This is the only known photo of this suit in America!) but you can also tell because he doesn’t have ears!

The volcano monster suit (on the left) has no ears, while GyakushuGoji (on the right does).

Other than a few similarly small differences, the Volcano Monster suit is nearly identical to GyakushuGoji. This because it was going to be used for an American movie (called The Volcano Monster) that was planing to also reuse special effects shots from Godzilla Raids Again.

Ok ok I fully intend to stump you with this one. If it doesn't, I'll uh. I'll say "aw shucks".

Image

Awwww heck. You have in fact stumped me. What is this from? Is this a fan animation?

I tricked u it's my own thing I made a few years ago. I figured it's extremely unlikely you'd possibly come across it before but the chances weren't zero lol

honey y'all couldn't fathom the amount of autistic studying and general media consuming towards this that i've done in my 25 1/2 years of life. I've seen things even most toku fans wouldn't believe. 'immovable object' is putting it lightly.

and yes the skill on display in this long post does do something for me, what of it

the older i get and the closer i am to reaching 30, the more the people around me try to deny me my age. it’s a constant ‘oh you’re just turning 29 again teehee 🤭’ or ‘dont tell your SO that, he’ll leave you for a younger model 😉’ and i just???? hate it?????????

i spent my entire teenaged years fighting for my life. i crawled through the deepest pits of my depression to cling to the promise of a life beyond that pain. i was so convinced that i was going to die young, that i would never see the grace of my age starting with a 2, let alone 3.

so im going to turn 30, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me from loving it.

this post was up for like five minutes and already im being told how wrong i am

fuck you, you can kiss my 30 year old ass

Turning 30 was a relief, like a weight of pressure I hadn't known about being lifted off

Turning 40 also has been great

Sure I'm going through a rough patch but thank god I'm not 20 and going through this. At 40 I know I can handle it

I like getting older in a lot of ways. Also I'm always closer to being able to get away with old man crimes, like stealing all the diner jam packets

Also the older I get the more I think wrinkles are fucking adorable and handsome as fuck on people

Aging is great actually

40 will be, too!

I get to turn 50 this year. I *Get To* not *have to.*

I hope you get to turn 50 one day, too!

My 30s were such an improvement on the BS that came before and that has only escalated into my 40s. There's some kind of wondrous release once you get passed the infamous 25, where we're so often told that everything goes downhill.

The pressure to do everything and be everything by 25 and, if not then, by 30, is exhausting, depressing and false. You don't have to. You can figure yourself out and take as long as you need. Age is just a number.

I am 41.

Thought I'd be dead at 28.

I have a partner I adore (and who adores me in return). I have more friends than I ever imagined could fit into my life. I have experience that tells me- you've seen this before, you can deal with it. And I have silver hairs that are like starlight beacons in my blond hair.

I am anxious and joyous and confused and adventurous and working it out and a million other things. And I'm glad for every day I get another wrinkle, another grey hair that says: I did not stop. I am still here. I am still going. And it's worth it.

If you’re unemployed, it’s not because there isn’t any work.

Just look around: A housing shortage, crime, pollution; we need better schools and parks. Whatever our needs, they all require work. And as long as we have unsatisfied needs, there’s work to be done.

So ask yourself, what kind of world has work but no jobs? It’s a world where work is not related to satisfying our needs, a world where work is only related to satisfying the profit needs of business.

This country was not built by the huge corporations or government bureaucracies. It was built by people who work. And, it is working people who should control the work to be done. Yet, as long as employment is tied to somebody else’s profits, the work won’t get done.

Was expecting classist bullshit, got the exact opposite

This is so ubelievably important and I hate that I have to keep re-explaining it to people.
