How's Simon?

Simon is great. He’s well feed, well trained and well cuddled. So yeah, i think he’s pretty great.

Raph takes good care of me

Including yelling at me in Spanish when I forget to eat

You ALWAYS forget to eat, how is that possible?! Dios.

I get really focused on my studying and forget to eat unless you force me to

Sidenote: I am very well cuddled. Raph is the perfect pillow

There are tons of people that are always supporting you rather or not you realize it and thankfully, Simon has been surrounded by Clary, and Luke, and the Shadowhunters and people that have been an inspiration for him and people that will continue to help put him in the right direction. Even Raphael. While they have a contentious relationship, Raphael, in the end, always has the best intentions for Simon because he’s a vampire. Raphael has a responsibility he takes very seriously about protecting the vampires. In all of the meetings you’ve seen, his first thought is “what about the vampires?” Not “what about myself? What about our political statute?” No, it’s always “what is best for my people?” and “what is best then for the Downworld?” and then “what is best for the Shadow world?” His priorities are very straightforward and in his actions you see that.

I totally overlooked this when I first heard Simon say this. The writers probably don’t even realize how big this is. But many Jews do not donate organs. It is “forbidden” by Jewish law. You are supposed to be buried with all organs and parts. Even secular Jews will follow this tradition. Because of this Israel has an extremely low percentage of organ donors, about half that of other western nations. So, I found it very amazing that Simon has a donor card. I think it represents more Reform values which is so interesting to see. Most Jews in television tend to be more Stereotypical and this is, I believe new for television. Not only is he a organ donor, but he drinks blood which is against Kashrut law. All blood has to be removed from animals before you consume the animal. He also mentioned he loved moo shu pork, another no no for a Jew keeping Kosher. He also did the Mourners Kaddish without 10 men present, if I remember correctly. Either these are over sites or they are intentional to represent the modern Jew. I love it though.

Here is a quote from one of the books, “Raphael seemed to him like Loki or some other trickster God, sometimes working for good and sometimes for evil, but always in his own interests.” This Raphael is totally different from the show one. The reason Raphael is pretty much my favorite character is because he is a trickster but never for himself, it’s always for his clan. And now his character has developed into so much more, he cares for everyone. He cares for the whole downworld and you can tell he cares for the clave too. He is hesitant to choose the downworld and he seems to be the only one who really understands that it’s a bad choice. I think he is one of the most complex characters. In the books you don’t realize how caring Raphael is until he dies for someone he loves (spoiler, but they haven’t been following the books), viewers can tell right away how caring Raphael is. In season 1 he wants to save his clan from breaking the accords and when Izzy almost fries his people he immediately pushes them back. In season 2 we learn about his family, his attachment to Isabelle, and his love for Magnus. He is such an amazing character.
