i learned about Marion Stokes, a Philadelphia woman who began taping whatever was on television in 1979 and didn’t stop until her death in 2012.. The 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes she made are the most complete collection preserving this era of TV. They are being digitized by the Internet Archive. (x)

i feel like this is selling her a bit short tbh.  It’s not like she was a random woman who decided to tape ‘whatever’ was on television.  She was a civil rights activist and archivist, who was extremely concerned about preserving history.  She believed that, by taping television, she would be preserving history EXACTLY as it was perceived at the time; she didn’t want the detail in the news to disappear with time.  And she was RIGHT.

Like I said, she didn’t just tape ‘whatever’ was on television.  It was extremely targeted towards news stations.  There were 8 VCRs running at all times in her home.  Her life—-and her family’s lives—-were centered around 6 hour blocks, since that was the amount of time that a tape would record for.  Her collections were also extremely organized.

That unique writing frustration when you’re researching something ridiculously specific or weird that you nonetheless KNOW some other writer has also researched in stupid depth and could write a doctoral dissertation on but there’s no practical way to find them so you’re just like two soul mates cruelly separated by time and space

Hi! I was just wondering, what's the best way to make/write out a plot?

Guide: How to Outline a Plot

The best way to write out a plot isn’t the same for everyone, and sometimes it’s even different from story to story. There are lots of different methods, and most writers use a combination of them, so you just have to try different things to see what works best for you. Here are some of the most common methods:

1. Just Write

Some writers are what’s known as “pansters” meaning that once they have a story idea in mind, they prefer to “fly by the seat of their pants” and start writing without any planning in place. The key to making this method work is to remember that you’re only writing the first draft. Nothing you’re doing is set in stone, so don’t feel the story has to be perfect in one shot. Follow your gut and write the story to the best of your ability. Worry about tightening and polishing in subsequent drafts.

2. Synopsis

Some writers prefer to start by writing beginning to end summary of the story, describing all the important details and events in the order that they unfold. Summaries can be a great way to flesh out an idea for a plot, and they can also serve as a nice guideline if you want to “just write” your story but need a bit more structure first.

3. Old-Fashioned Outline

Do they still teach outlining in school? I don’t even know… when I was a kid, we learned how to do outlines with Roman numerals for the main points, capital letters for the minor points, and numbers for sub-points. If you’re good at outlining, this can be a great way to outline your plot.

4. Timeline

Creating a timeline for your story can be a great way to map it out. All you need is a beginning event, climax event, and end event. From there you can start filling in the events that follow and precede those events. Even if you don’t know the exact date for when a scene takes place, you can still mark it down in the right general place.

5. Scene List

If you have a pretty good idea of the scenes that need to take place, or at least a good number of them, you can start by writing out a scene list. It’s nice to do them in a table if you can so you can organize important details, like chapter, scene number, date and location, who’s in it, and then a short summary. Though, how you organize it is up to you. If you prefer, you can just write the scene number and then a brief summary.

6. Story Structure Map

Some writers like to map out their story according to whatever story structure they want to follow. They’ll pull up a graphic or chart of the structure, transcribe it onto paper or into a document, and then note each relevant event for each structure “mile marker.”

7. Subway/Tube Map

This is a new one I recently heard about. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but I think it’s fascinating. And there are even subway map creators you can use if you don’t want to draw it out. Ultimately, the goal is to map out the events of your story in the style of a subway/tube map. This method makes it easy to illustrate subplots and see how they relate to the rest of your story.

8. The Mind Map

Mind maps can be a fantastic way to get the most important parts of your story out on paper, and to start figuring out where other parts fit in and how they relate to everything else.

9. Index Cards

Some writers have luck writing out key scenes, moments, bits of dialogue (or anything else they have in mind) on individual index cards, which can then be laid out in order on a table, allowing for cards to be easily moved around, added, subtracted, etc. until a more complete story starts to emerge. Some writers even invest in giant cork boards for this purpose. Others use a dry erase board and draw out the “cards” instead. A lot of story writing software, such as Scrivener, even includes digital bulletin boards and index cards that you can use to visualize your story.

10. Method/Theory/Template

There are numerous methods/theories/templates dedicated to building/fleshing out plots. Some to look into:

- The Snowflake Method- Dramatica Theory- Save the Cat! for Novels- The Hero’s Journey

If one of the above doesn’t work for you, you’re sure to find even more ideas online. Try doing a search for “how to outline a plot” or “outlining a novel” to see what comes up. You might even try searching for your favorite author’s name plus “outlining” to see if they’ve done any posts sharing their own methods. You may also want to look into books, software, and apps/web sites that offer ways to help you plot your story.

Good luck!

if you have a writer friend and are planning to give feedback, please remember to give the feedback that's needed at that point in time

sometimes writers need tough love, sometimes we just need someone to tell us what's awesome about our work. sometimes we need line-by-line critique, sometimes we need plot-sized critique. sometimes this, sometimes that.

it all depends on the time and the writer. there is no "one size fits all" critique.

And don’t be afraid to ask them what point they’re at! Maybe they won’t know, but maybe they were just too shy or embarrassed or scared to say that they want to know what parts you like. Maybe they’re frustrated about one part and just need someone to smack them upside the head instead of console them. But you won’t know until you ask!

And if you get it wrong? Ask for forgiveness and - more importantly - ask how you can provide better help next time.

Learning to give an artist feedback is like learning a new love language: it might come naturally to you or it might take a thousand tries, but everyone reacts and wants and needs differently. Learn how to love your writer friends the way they receive love instead of how you give it.

Hi, I have a question, how do I stop being so attached to my characters? It's gotten to the point of me trying to write an emotional scene and it taking an hour for me to get one paragraph out. I stop a lot and think how it would look and also really get into it and it's even harder for me to write since I barely do any of it and mostly just worldbuild. I want to be able to write the stuff in my head, but my body just can't and it drains me a lot. How do I get over that?

The thing is, that exhaustion is completely normal, especially when you’re writing a particularly emotional scene or overall story. I completely understand the pain and frustration of only being able to get out one good paragraph a day, but if you’re struggling with getting a zero or first draft done, it’s because you’re simply trying too hard to make it presentable. If you’re still doing a lot of writing, it’s not in a phase where you need to be worried about how good it’s coming out on the first try. Just get the words out and worry about the quality later.

For you, it sounds like you’re also the kind of person who instead of moving forward, re-reads over and over and fixes tiny things that aren’t worth the trouble at that point. I challenge you to write 500 words without looking back at what you’ve got. Just keep typing. Don’t stop, turn off the correction suggestions, and just keep writing. You’ll never get a draft out if you don’t just keep writing.

I know that a lot of writers, including yourself perhaps, get so wrapped up in writing things exactly how they’re appearing in their head, but that’s not what the draft process is for. You already have the images in your head, so zoom in on them later. Just get the basic idea out and add the details once the bones of the stories are there for you to stick the flesh on.

➩ hc: katsuki + a spacey s/o

a/n: anon.. the way u described me in this ask. all i do is daydream. that’s literally all i do. i also went into a bit of detail and rambled... oops pairing: bakugou katsuki x (l/n) (f/n) warnings: fluff & swearing
  • Let’s get this out of the road first— Katsuki probably calls you space case. At this point, you’re not sure if it’s a term of endearment or not, but you’ll take it. Your relationship consists of teasing, and to an outsider it does look concerning, but most people know that it comes from the goodness of your hearts. Usually, Bakugou tends to be your rep for the media— so when you two make it big as pro heroes, don’t be surprised if your name gets dragged through the dirt sometimes. You’ll be staring off into space at a gala and some interviewers come over and Bakugou ignores Midoriya’s cries for him to stop trying to ruin your career.
  • In class when you’re daydreaming, it literally takes everything he has to not start spluttering out laughter— you can tell, since his shoulders are shaking but he tells you that it’s from ‘anger’ but nobody believes him. You and Kaminari happen to be the two that would zone out in the middle of a battle, and as you all get older, it becomes the bane of Katsuki’s existence. He could be fighting a villain and you need to use your special move, and he looks over and sees you staring at a puddle, caught in your thoughts. He tries to resist the urge to scream everytime it happens.
  • He lowkey thinks it’s adorable; but he won’t let on. He thinks of it as his own personal secret. Being laidback— let’s assume like Todoroki— will honestly annoy Bakugou from time to time. He just doesn’t understand how there could be a literal fire, and you’re just there with a soft grin like: “it’s all good!” Like. Sir. How are you not popping a blood vessel? If you and Todoroki are in the same room, you can guarantee that Bakugou is screaming in his head. He sits with the most monotone expression whilst internally it’s just: “how the FUCK are they SO INDIFFERENT.”
  • But honestly— your chilled, yet head in the clouds personality is a bit childish, but it’s good. It’s nice. Having someone who isn’t caught up in the whirlwind that is U.A. High, and you’re just doing your own thing. It’s like a breath of fresh air of sorts— I think Katsuki needs someone like that. We see throughout the series that he does overthink, and he takes the blame easily. I think having a s/o that sees things for what they are would really help him. He’s been put on a pedestal his whole life (his own mother, Mitsuki, even explicitly states it in the parent-teacher meeting episode after his kidnapping.) and that led him to believe he’s the best, and anything less than #1 is unacceptable. Bakugou’s canon personality is that he didn’t have friends growing up (which is theoretically why Kirishima is so friendly with him.) — he only had followers and those who feared him.
  • So, having a laid back and reliable s/o is really good for him. Someone non-judgemental, someone sweet, someone who says things as they are. However, he does become afraid that because of how likeable you can be, that someone will replace him. He’s scared that you think he’s too mean, too much of an asshole or just a bad person in general. Personally, I think deep down Katsuki does care what other people think. And at the top of that list, is you. He’s an insecure teenaged kid— he worries whether he’s good enough for you. But he does come to know, you wouldn’t have anyone else. You two are, pardon for lack of better phrasing, made for eachother.
  • Okay back to some lighthearted stuff!! In the future, when you two go grocerie shopping, he dreads it. Every single time you two go out, you end up wandering off somewhere and he spends around forty five minutes trying to find you. Or, in public gatherings (like galas, class 1-A’s reuinions.) he has to hold your hand since you have a tendency to get distracted easily. However— he knows your worth. Especially when you point out his stupid mistakes. (Like baking a cake until it’s as hard as stone. Bakugou.. you good?)
  • ALSO I FEEL THE NEED TO SAY THIS: you come out with the weirdest stuff at two in the morning and katsuki is like: why do i love this fool. god you could’ve given me ANYONE but i get her? (mf acts like its a burden. Katsuki you act as if you aren’t enamoured with her... okay bet.) But seriously, when you ask him: “Katsuki.. do you think leaves feel sad in autumn when they fall?” He has the biggest grin on his face before he starts full on belting out laughter. (One time, you two got a noise complaint from your neighbours.)
  • He’s probably laughed more than he ever has with you— and you can tell. He’s constantly giving off an aura of soft happiness even if he has a ‘scowl’ on his face— it’s really sweet and fulfilling because you can tell he really does love you.

@ all of my followers who use the mobile tumblr app!!!

please go to “General Settings” then to “Dashboard Preferences” and turn off “Best Stuff First”. This is killing artist exposure! Please, please, PLEASE, turn it off if you really do love the artists you follow! You’d be helping us so much! Please reblog this so that more people may know!

Artists and writers are losing a lot of exposure over this new feature.  Someone recently posted a photo of their notes over the last month and there was a HUGE difference from before the “Best Stuff First” feature and after.

The things many people create on this site is getting buried.  Some is commissions but a LOT of content is done for free.  Changing your settings does help them, but it also helps YOU still find the things/ blogs you enjoy.  If you want to actively help, hit the reblog button if you enjoy something.

Please guys, reblog this like crazy. AND if you like someone’s artwork of fics, please reblog it too

Sigh, I was wondering why my dashboard was so samey these last few days. You can end up missing out on a ton of art if you don’t turn this feature off.

Settings>Dashboard Preferences > Turn off “Best stuff first”

Pass the word out :)
