Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1

The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.

So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.

So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.

Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.

And the probe is working again.

From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

That is amazing for three reasons. 1. that they figured out what was wrong with it, 2. that they reprogrammed it, and 3. THEY STILL KNEW HOW TO REPROGRAM IT.

I cannot emphasize just how MUCH computer languages have changed since the mid-1970s. Voyager I was launched in September 1977. My phone has far more computing power than the entirety of that probe, and many times more computer coding to make it run.

Knowledge of the old languages is going away. I was a little kid in the 1970s. I'm in my 50s now. That means anyone who worked at NASA at the time that probe launched is in their 70s, if not their 80s...and anyone still alived who worked on that probe's computing code probably hasn't used that particular programming language in decades.

Yes, with zero doubt NASA kept records on the programming language, but it is a language. You use it or you lose it So the fact they could still reprogram it is also something to be impressed by.

I'd be hard-pressed to code in the first computer language I learned, which was BASIC...the original BASIC (aka Microsoft BASIC), and I had enjoyed learning how to do so. (Even got the first Girl Scout badge in Computers because of it!)
