My understanding and analysis of the magical system in The Dragon Prince. Part 2. Primal, dark, love and life magic.

So, this second post (here’s the first one) will present my theory about this: about the magical system as a whole thing (more or less), about love and life magic, I will explain why it’s two different things, what’s their place in the magical system, their role, about how they're supposed to work.

1st part. what proof, in the show, do we have about another kind of magic?

Well, take a look at this:

The two pictures are when Avizandum and Zym are attacking, with lightning. they are the exact same colors (cool, nothing exceptional, Lily, really cool...)

Yeah, but now look at this, when Zym is trying to wake up (maybe even heal?) his mom:

See all the colors, here? We have white, green, blue, purble, some kind of pink-orange-yellow...: well, every colors, as if every kind of primal magic were present. And I don't think it's just to make things pretty here.

Because it's not the only time we see this phenomenon, where “all the colors” are here. There’s two other examples:

Hi everyone! Long time no see!!! I haven't come here in Eons, but what better motivation that earlier release of S5!!!

So! My thought on 5 without spoiler and out of context?

  • We don't see a lot of Aaravos but almost everything he says has a double entendre. He knows it, you know it. The writers know it. EVERYONE KNOWS IT!
  • Terry is a dork. 
  • Callum is a dork. 
  • Everyone is a dork!
  • Amaya and Janai: I'll jump into danger without hesitation and make difficult decision for my people. What? Picking flower? Impossible, I can't!
  • Also that scene with Zubeia who goes full Batman-dramatic-entrance - It was amazing, it was cliche (because hey! No risk to squash the little humans?) and no, I won't give context!
  • Bloodmoon Huntress. Seriously!
  • PIRATE KING!!!!
  • trust issues
  • control issues
  • daddy issues
  • lot, lot of issues! Especially for Viren 
  • Worst of ALL THINGS: that 5 seconds of Ethari content in the credits. Yes, you heard me! This is so cruel :’(

Fanfiction Authors: HEADS UP

(Non-authors, please RB to signal boost to your author friends!)

An astute reader informed me this morning that one of my fics (Children of the Future Age) had been pirated and was being sold as a novel on Amazon:

(And they weren't even creative with their cover design. If you're going to pirate something that I spent a full year of my life writing, at least give me a pretty screenshot to brag about later. Seriously.)

I promptly filed a DMCA complaint to have it removed, but I checked out the company that put it up -- Plush Books -- and it looks like A LOT of their books are pirated fic. They are by no means the only ones doing this, either -- the fact that """publishers""" can download stories from AO3 in ebook format and then reupload them to Amazon in just a few clicks makes fic piracy a common problem. There are a whole host of reasons why letting this continue is bad -- including actual legal risk to fanfiction archives -- but basically:

IF YOU ARE A FANFIC AUTHOR WITH LONG AND/OR POPULAR WORKS, PLEASE CHECK AMAZON TO SEE IF YOUR STORIES HAVE BEEN PIRATED.

You can search for your fics by title, or by text from the description (which is often just copied wholesale from AO3 as well). If you find that someone has stolen your work and is selling it as their own, you can lodge a DMCA complaint (Amazon.com/USA site; other countries have different systems). If you haven't done this before, it's easy! Here's a tutorial:

HOW TO FILE A COPYRIGHT COMPLAINT FOR STOLEN WORK ON AMAZON.COM:

First, go to this form. You'll need to be signed into your Amazon account.

  • Select the radio buttons/dropdown options (shown below) to indicate that you are the legal Rights Owner, you have a copyright concern, and it is about a pirated product.
  • Enter the name of your story in the Name of Brand field.
  • In the Link to the Copyrighted Work box, enter a link to the story on AO3 or whatever site your work is posted on.
  • In the Additional Information box, explain that you are the author of the work and it is being sold without your permission. That's all you really need. If you want, you can include additional information that might be helpful in establishing the validity of your claim, but you don't have to go into great detail. You can simply write something like this:
I am the author of this work, which is being sold by [publisher] without my permission. I originally published this story in [date/year] on [name of site], and have provided a link to the original above. On request, I can provide documentation proving that I am the owner of the account that originally posted this story.
  • In the ASIN/ISBN-10 field, copy and paste the ID number from the pirated copy's URL. You'll find this ten-digit number in the Amazon URL after the word "product," as in the screenshot below. (If the URL extends beyond this number, you can ignore everything from the question mark on.) Once this number has been added, Amazon will pull the product information automatically and add it to the complaint form, so you can check the listing title and make sure it's correct.
  • Finally, add your contact information to the relevant fields, check the "I have read and accept the statements" box, and then click Submit. You should receive an email confirmation that Amazon has received the form.

Please share this information with your writer friends, keep an eye out for/report pirated works, and help us keep fanfiction free and legally protected!

So in many ways, in spite of Ezran’s triumphs (strengthening his bond with Ezran, keeping the crowd calm and paving a way forward with his speech, initially winning over Rex Igneous when no one else could, getting the group to work together), season four is also book ended in some ways by his failures. Twice we see Ezran overestimate people’s willingness to change. 

At first, it’s 4x03 in the Valley of Graves, wanting to honour Zubeia next to the graves of his father she ordered a hit on and his mother, murdered by the Dragon Queen’s mate. It’s not as though almost anyone but Callum and Ezran would have more reason to oppose this even though they’re the ones conducting it, but Ezran underestimates the loyalty to his father and the anger at the dragons. Then he underestimates the anger of the dragons, and how prideful, dangerous, and angry Rex Igneous is, and gets knocked into a wall for it. 

It also makes me think of all the parallels in the main cast of like, people who are trying to move on (Rayla, Soren, Ezran) vs people who aren’t (Callum) or who flat out refuse to (Claudia), or are otherwise left in limbo. Now, the thematic cornerstone of moving on is whether you are actually addressing your feelings and the weight of them, as Ezran points out in his magnificent speech, or whether you are just denying or burying them, but still, Ezran rises far above the rest in doing that crucial work on both ends, and I love him for it.

He just also has a very long way to go.

Aaravos and his (possible) place in Xadia

In the last theory I made (here’s the complete version) about Aaravos and his hidden agenda, I’ve retranscripted some things the creators said about Aaravos. 

One of them was that there’s a part of him who wants power, who wants to be worshiped and revered. 

But I also said it doesn’t make sense since he’s a startouch and a first elf, which means practically a deity in Xadia. He was powerful, he had to be revered just by existing, no?

While discussing with @theoneandonlymagiscientist​, something just hit me (again, yes. There’s always things that hit me…):

if Aaravos is searching ultimately for this (power and worship), then maybe it wasn’t that simple?

I already talked about what kind of power he could be searching for in that theory linked above (life-magic), and that he still didn’t achieve to reach it because he doesn’t understand “love” (if you don’t undersant, go read what I put in this link, it will make sense ^^)

But now, what about the “worshiped” part? What led him to this? What led a powerful first startouch elf, already revered by probably all of Xadia, to want this.

Well… all of Xadia? Not sure.

Hi guys.

Coming back to this old theory, because part of what I thought back then might really be true: the other Startouches elves don’t treat Aaravos like he’s the same as them, as one of them (or something like that)

Why do I come back to this?

Well, first, anyone who’s read “Patience” will get it : 

I have not seen the stars in centuries. But when I see them again—when the stars are forced to look upon me, their dark brother—they will know how I have waited.
And when everything they have built lies shattered, I will savor their fall from the sky.

You can feel the love he helds for them, right? Right?

Oh and also, if there was any doubt left: 

Aaravos has had a long, long time for all of his anger to fester into something even more dangerous than it was before he was imprisoned. (It’s an answer  from Devon in the Discord AMA)

Meaning he was already angry before what happened 300years ago. And all of this? The war, manipulating Xadia and humanity for thousands of years, wanting power and all? Pretty sure this anger is all directed at his kin and mortals are just casualities in his quest for revenge/proving himself/”insert anyone from his family” issues. 

... I really want to know what happened to the cute little bean...

something’s telling me it’s a sad story...

... no, I won’t start tonight to dig into what Justin said in that AMA about Aaravos being able to possess Callum because the kid used dark magic before (even though he said “NO” (remember, hisotry, the book, you write it yourself, all of that)). And I won’t think about how a bunch of my previous stupid theories might be true, like “Evil Callum” being Aaravos (but who’s Villads in that dream, then? hmmm? Remember Villads, the one whose entire being reflect in some ways the sky and the stars arcanum’s phylosophy?... actually I don’t remember if I ever wrote that one... it was really interesting... damn I will have to turn back to this. No wait... that would mean that Aaravos became aware of Callum from that point and added him to his chestboard wh... omg, now I imagine him spying on the kids from afar and enjoying his good show and ... okay I’m rambling) or even that other stupid one where I thought Aaravos is indeed the one who created dark magic (it was never confirmed...)

Always feel exhausted?

I think sometimes we get so bogged in exhaustion and misery that we lose sight of a better life.

I've been in similar places, and I'm really glad I continued taking steps to try to get to a better spot.

I know it's not simple for everyone, but I've found that maintaining this pursuit keeps a bit of hope in my life - which already makes it more enjoyable.

Just some thoughts. Hope you're all well today!
