Hellooo~ Iām sorry to bother you if I am.. but Iām 15, and I live in a western state where western magic is a topic thatās often talked about and brought up. Itās fairly dark, but it had me thinking, ācould I become a witch?ā because I didnāt realize how many people around me are witches until I moved here. Iād like to get into it, but (and this sounded weird in my head) can I just become a witch? Is that a thing? If so, where should I start? I was told stuff like tarot cards arenāt a good start
First I have to say you shouldnāt become a witch just because everyone around your area is a witch, but if you feel deep in your heart you want to be a witch then by all means you should be a witch! Btw your no bother at all love, Iām just so sorry it took me so long to answer your ask.
šTips for Beginner Witches
Thereās no exact order you need to follow. Iād advise you to be respectful to magick, to the elements, to the deities, and to mother earth. Start being more aware of all she gives us, if you arenāt already.
š4 Things I Believe Beginner Witches Should Ask Themselves
Note that the answers to these things will change, but that a firm grasp of the answers at any point in your practice may be helpful to you. I recommend actually writing your answers down, and every now and again check back and see if your stance has shifted.
šIs magick real? If yes, then what do you mean when you say, āMagick is realā. (Do you mean that you can effect reality with your will, intent, and energy? Do you mean like, Harry Potter real? What will disappoint you to realize might not be probable? What will inspire you to realize you can accomplish?)
šWhere are your lines? (What do you firmly believe is true/false, right/wrong? Violence, doing harm, controlling others, etc. Would you punch someone if they threatened a friend? Would you curse someone if they threatened a friend? What would you do, if your coven head told you it was right but you felt it was wrong?)
šWhat are you looking for in a magickal path? (Pro Tip ā no one has all the answers and there is no one right way.)
šWhat are you prepared to do in order to accomplish your goals? (How many spoons do you have to give this practice? Can you devote one night a week, are you going to randomly pick stuff up on Tumblr, are you going to leave society to pursue your studies under a waterfall, etc.)
I recommend that no one make any oaths or vows in their first year of practice. Get to know yourself, how you feel about magick, and what you actually want to do before you do any big commitments. (Historic anecdote ā this is what the original year and a day was for.) More strident, but still personal, recommendation: if someone tries to get you to oath to them within your first week of being a witch, run.
šThings People Should Tell Beginner Witches, But Often Donāt
šNever do anything you donāt feel comfortable with.
šNever rush ahead of yourself. Take your time with learning about the craft, you will thank yourself in the future.
šUse what you have! You donāt need supplies to be a witch or have a successful spell. Its all mental and about your flow of energy. You only need yourself, your intent, and a belief in magick. Your craft is your own, do not feel pressured to be more like witches you admire. Do whatever feels right to you. Unless you follow a specific tradition, there are no rules in witchcraft. There is a lot more freedom in witchcraft than you may realize.
šDonāt ever shame other witches. Best example, some witches curse and some donāt.Ā
šBe respectful. Always remember to thank mother earth for everything she supplies us with.
šAlways say goodbye to any entities you call into your circle.
šNever be scared of spirits. They are all around us, all the time, they only make themselves known sometimes. Fear can feed them and help them grow in strength.
šDonāt worry about a title, you donāt need to scramble to find out what kind of witch you are. You will just know based on what you do most in your practice, it will take some time.
šDonāt be afraid to change your mind.
šDonāt throw good energy after bad by continuing to do something that isnāt right for you.
šDonāt be afraid to continue your education, even if that means learning something that was right for you before that is no longer right for you.
šThere is no one right way to do this.
šThere are as many bad people in Paganism and witchcraft as there are anywhere else. Donāt think that these people are all spiritually enlightened beings who mean you well and who will give good advice.
šYahoo Answers is not your friend. You have the internet ā which has access to both all of human information and all of human misinformation. Look for credible sources. Anything that seems too easy or too good to be true probably is. Work on critical thinking.
šYou Should Probably Learn the Difference Between Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft
šPaganism
Pagan is an umbrella term for a member of a religious, spiritual, or cultural community,Ā other than those of the main world religions.
Some Pagans practice witchcraft, others do not.
šWicca
Wicca is a religion. Most people consider Wicca as falling under the Paganism umbrella, although not all Pagans are Wiccan. Not all Wiccans are witches and not all witches are Wiccan.
Wiccan is generally defined as:
Dualistic ā There is a God and a Goddess.
Pacifistic ā Wicca has a rede that requires Wiccan do no harm to themselves or others, though not all Wiccans (such as those who follow Doreen Valienteās suggested guidelines) are Pacifistic, so there are definitely exceptions to this.
Earth-based ā Having a respect for and acknowledgment of the powers of the Earth.
šWitchcraft
The spiritual or secular art, craft, and/or practice of the witch, defined many ways by many different people.
Yes, male identifying and/or presenting persons can be witches.
šPagan and Witch Fallacies
There are certain ideas that most beginners in the witchcraft community will encounter over and over again. Iām going to run down some things with the reminder, that I can only speak for my personal tradition.
šāYou should remove all negative influences from your life! You should purge all negative feelings! Be positive all the time!ā Not everything that is negative is bad. Not everything negative can be avoided. We canāt all just quit our jobs and live in a witch shack in the mountains. We have to endure negative things, both because it is healthier to experience the full range of human emotion rather than to ignore a large chunk of it, and because it isnāt possible. What we should do is stop victim blaming witches who are going through hard times and stop telling witches they canāt be angry when they encounter something that should be angering.
šāBut, tradition!ā Just because an affluent white guy in the 1400-1600s said something, doesnāt mean you should do it. We donāt follow their medicinal advice anymore; we donāt have to follow their magickal advice either. Seriously, I donāt care if tradition says a trans woman shouldnāt be in a sky clad ritual thatās bullshit. We donāt put leeches on our bodies anymore letās leave the past nonsense where it belongs.
šāWe have to make sure everyone feels included and welcome!ā Not if they abuse the welcome of others, we do not. The problem with making some people feel included and welcome is that you make their victims feel excluded and unwelcome because youāve made them unsafe.
šāWe have to support each other and love each other and be a positive force in peopleās lives.ā Okay, yes, in small doses, this is a great aim. It doesnāt work for everyone (some witches are spite and malice fueled and they are still witches), but okay, itās a nice idea. Until it becomes ableist or demands free emotional labor from people, which it often does.
šāWe have to educate them!ā Okay, itās great that there is this effort in the community to educate others. But if you donāt have the spoons or if it seems like theyāre using the demand for their own education as a way to still have access to a community they are abusing, then no, you have no obligation to put their education over your well being. None. They have access to Google (even if they have to go to a library to use it.)
šāYou have to earn your right to be a witch.ā No, no you donāt. Seriously, though, from whom? Dusty white men in graves? A Llewellyn author who couldnāt fact check themselves out of a paper bag?
šāYou have to be ________ rank, degree, etc. to have an opinion on this topic.ā Yeah, okay, Iāll be sure to wave my certificate in your face before having an opinion on my own tradition. No. Your opinion may be an uneducated one and you may be corrected for it, but that doesnāt mean that you didnāt have the right to it before you completed your O levels at Hogwarts.
šAs a corollary to above, āThis is just my opinion and you canāt be mad at me for it!ā People absolutely have a right to their opinions. And everyone else the right to decide those opinions make them a rude person.
šāIām super special and powerful because xyz, which means I get to tell you what to do.ā People only get to tell you what to do if you let them. Sometimes, thatās an exchange we willingly make, but other times, people will feel they have the right to tell you what to do because they are a hereditary witch or because theyāve been practicing longer. Just remember their position doesnāt trump your humanity and you donāt have to kiss the feet of someone who kicks you.
šāThe person really wants _____ from you, and you should help them on their path. Helping them on their path helps you on yours!ā Just because someone wants something from you, doesnāt mean they get it. Being a witch doesnāt take away your right to say no. Ā
Please remember that you donāt have to earn your right to be here. This one is tricky on some level to be the respected person in your community, you need to put in your time.
You donāt have to earn admission to witchcraft, but you do have to earn specific positions and other peopleās trust. If you teach people not to trust you through your actions, they wonāt trust you.
šResearch
This list is designed for the beginner witch, who keeps hearing the advice āResearch!ā but wants some better specifics on what exactly that means.
Now, you donāt have to be a complete expert on all of these or even most of these! You donāt even have to incorporate all of them into your practice. Theyāre just some stuff itās good to have a basic working knowledge of in the craft.
šPlanetary Correspondences- Even if cosmic witchcraft isnāt your thing, a lot (and I mean A LOT) of correspondences in any other category are going to eventually lead back to the planets. Having a basic understanding of what each planet governs is extremely helpful when learning the correspondences of basically anything else.
šHerb Correspondences- Herbs and spices are incredibly useful! Theyāre probably one of the most versatile of the ābig categoriesā since they can be used in herbalism and kitchen witchery, as well as a great add-on to any other variation of witchcraft. Itās good to have a working knowledge of what herbs you can use in a pinch, especially the stuff you already have in your kitchen. When an emergency calls, itās good to know how that chili powder can help you.
šCrystal Correspondences- This is another great add on! Crystals can often be used to enhance and focus the energy of a spell, as well as cleanse any ritual tools you have. Besides, who doesnāt like pretty rocks? Crystals can be particularly great for the witch who has a tactile mind, and likes to have things they can feel and roll around in their hand.
šDays of the Week- Knowing the right time to cast a spell can be very important! Casting a love spell on a Friday gives it an added boost, or at the very least creates a path of least resistance. Besides, thereās only seven of them, so itās easy to learn quickly. You get a lot of bang for your buck!
šPhases of the Moon- I have a really big collective crush on the moon, it seems. And for good reason! The moon is a great source of power and mystery even in a completely mundane setting! Understanding the phases of the moon and how it can affect your craft is extremely important. (Hint: you can cast spells even when it isnāt the Full Moon.)
šBasic Mythology and Lore- This is an absolute must if you plan on going into any type of spirit work. Even if that isnāt your thing, itās good to know a little bit. Firstly, because you may draw unwanted attention from spirits, and itās good to know how to deal with them if it happens. Secondly, because if you draw from a path with any history behind it, itās good to know how the rules go down on their turf.
šBasic Divination- Not everyone has the money or the time to pick up and learn how to read a 78-card Tarot deck, but things like scrying and pendulums are pretty easy to figure out quickly. Whatās more, they can be done on little to no budget. Divinationās a useful tool to have on your utility belt, and who wants to pay someone to use a pendulum for them when you can learn it yourself?
šReligious Roots- You donāt have to be a religious witch at all, but witchcraft still has its roots as a religious practice! Lotās of practices have a cultural context as well, which can be important to know in order to fully understand the action youāre performing. A lot of correspondences, traditions, and rites come from cultural or religious roots. Itās good to know not only what people did, but why they did it! Does x tool have some symbolic meaning or was it just what was available at the time? What was simply a product of the culture around them?
šThe History of Witchcraft- Itās good to know the history of witchcraft because you are now becoming a part of it.
šFamous Witches- Itās up to you if you want to research this topic. It is by no means a requirement to know this. If your interested to know famous witches then by all means research it up!
šTypes of Witches- Itās great to know all the different types of witches not only to figure out what type of witch you are, but just to be educated about all the different types of witches.
šTypes of Magick- For example, white magick, chaos magick, etc. Itās good to research and learn about the different types of magick because then youāll have a better idea of what type of magick youāll be practicing the most.
šTypes of Spells- Such as curses, hexes, etc. Itās good to know the different types of spells because soon youāll probably be practicing one of them.
šTalismans vs Sigils- Its good to learn what each one of them are and how to use them because youāll most likely be using them in your craft.
šWitch Alphabets- It is not required to know this, but itās something good to learn if thatās your thing. Some witches even use certain witch alphabets such as the Theban alphabet in their Grimoire/BOS.
šWitchy Symbols- I have a tattoo of a witchy symbol on the back of my neck. Itās the triple moon symbol and it reminds me that my craft is valid and beautiful. It reminds me that Iām part of the witchcraft community. It symbolizes my faith and my love for my faith. I think itās very important to learn all the witchy symbols because it doesnāt hurt to know them.
šDeities- If your the type of witch who worships deities then by all means go for it! Research more and more about the deities until you have it down pat and you have it memorized.
šDifferent Paths- Secular witchcraft and religious witchcraft. Witchcraft alone, is a practice. However, some paths are indeed religious, such as Wicca. Make sure you know the difference before you begin actively practicing and before you decide on your path, if you do choose to do so.
šColor correspondences- This is something great to know for future spellwork.
šSabbats- Also known as esbats and the witches sabbaths. This is kind of a must-know because if your going to be a witch you must know your own witchy holidays such as Samhain, Yule, Beltane, etc.
šThe Basic Tools of Witchcraft- Itās good to know the basic tools of witchcraft for future reference in your spellwork or so you know what to find/buy for your craft. It is by no means necessary to buy these tools unless you absolutely want to. You do not need any fancy witchcraft tools for your craft. You only need yourself, your intent, and your belief in magick. I prefer to use tools myself though.
šAltars- Itās good to know how to set up your own altar and what exactly is an altar.
šTraditional Witchcraft Practises- Such as circle casting and how to cast a basic circle protection.
šSafety- Itās very important to know what is safe to use/burn/touch/ingest. There are lots of poisonous and potentially fatal plants and ingredients out there. Remember to be safe when working with these dangerous ingredients.
šEasy Magick/Witchcraft- Itās good to start off small with the easy spells rather than to start off big. So look up easy spells/magick/witchcraft to start with.
šElements- Elements are a huge part of magick it would be very good for you to know the importance and use of the elements in magick.
šDream Interpretation- Something interesting to know is dream interpretation. Study what your dreams mean, why theyāre important, and how you can benefit from listening in to the deeper messages they hold. You can even keep a dream journal! Start recording everything you can remember as soon as you wake up.
šCharging- Something that works in everyday witchcraft is charging! Learn how to charge your crystals, jewelry, objects, and sigils.
šEnchanting Objects- Something that works in everyday witchcraft is enchanting! Learn how to enchant objects you use everyday.
šGlamours- Something that works in everyday witchcraft is using glamours in makeup, cosmetics, and everyday wear. Learn more about how to use glamours.
šWitchblr- Donāt underestimate witchblr thereās so much useful information on Tumblr. So research witchblr on Tumblr and read, read, read!
šGrounding- I think everyone should ground themselves at least once a day, it makes you feel so balanced. So learn how to ground yourself and practice grounding yourself everyday.
šRead
Before you even think about practicing magick, you need to study. It sounds tedious, I know, but witchcraft is not a trivial undertaking.Ā
šStart A Grimoire/BOS
Youāll need a safe place to keep all of the information youāve gathered safe, and a Grimoire/BOS, is essentially a journal for that exact purpose. It doesnāt have to be fancy (though youāre welcome to make it as ostentatious as you like.) It can be a bullet journal if thatās easy for you. Within your Grimoire/BOS you should keep all gathered information, spells, failures, successes, records of work youāve done, anything that pertains to your craft, etc.
šDonāt Pressure Yourself To Pick A Path
You might see a lot of witches who class themselves as one thing or another. For example, storm witches, kitchen witches, elemental witches, spirit witches, green witches, cosmic witches, etc. That is cool and their prerogative, but you will also see witches known as eclectic. Eclectic witches, are simply witches who choose to practice many different types of magick and forge their own path, instead of following only one, or following a pre-established path.Ā Basically, there is no need at all, whatsoever, to label yourself. With many of us, our paths found us in time.Ā
šCarry A Little Journal With You
You canāt always carry your Grimoire with you, so I personally like to carry a tiny little journal with me, for those moments when inspiration takes me, or if something captures my imagination or attention. You can add it to your Grimoire/BOS later.
šNever Stop Learning
Oh, and one more thing, donāt ever stop learning, reading, and recording. Witchcraft is a path of continuous learning.
šGrounding
Grounding is the act of centering your energy and focusing it within yourself. You can ground yourself by being out in nature and using visualizing techniques that tie your energies firmly into the ground (very traditional method), or by finding a quiet place that you are content in and meditating.
šKeep Journals
Keep journals. Yes, plural. One for dreams, one for your general day to day feelings, and one for your craft. You cannot record too much! Take notes on everything!
šStart Calling Yourself A Witch
The final steps are to start calling yourself a witch and start practicing witchcraft.
My asks are always open, if you have any questions just ask and I will answer. You can also send me a message. Hope I helped! Good luck babe!
Please add to this so any baby witches can see what you have to say and be informed!

Hello darlings! Today I really want to talk about magical waters. Iāll start with simple waters, then one ingredient waters, and then composite waters. Waters is pretty much anything like water that is used magically, so it ranges from storm water to tobacco and damiana tincture, and other stuff. Any of these can be collected whenever is convenient, but I added the time to collect them to make them more potent.
Natural Waters
Rain Water:
Rain water can be used for any spell to make it more potent, but it is a useful tool in peace magic, to quell anger, to relax, and for dream magic. Collect whenever you want.
Storm Water:
Storm water can be either protective or offensive. Use it to wash down your doors to protect you from hexes, and wash your tools with it to amplify their power. You can use it in any hexes or curses you want. To amplify it, add rusty nails to it and let turn rusty. Collect on a waxing gibbous moon.
Swamp Water:
Can be used in works for binding, hexing, or cloaking. Use when wanting to cause illness. Annoint yourself with swamp water to make yourself unnoticeable to others. Colelct on the dark moon (second new moon of the month) or on the new moon.
Marsh Water:
Marsh water is almost the same as swamp water, but it is more suitable for cloaking than other things. It can also be used for cleansing negative energies. Colelct on waning crescent moon.
Hail Water:
Hail water is melted hailstones. Use it for protection or hexing. Similar to storm water, but more aggressive. Use when you want to break sojmeone, or when you wish to cause physical harm. Collect during a full moon for best results.
Salt Water:
Salt water can be used for cleansing and protection from negativity. Simply add salt to water.
Sea Water:
Use sea water in works involving the psyche, or in hexing. It can also be used for cleansing. I use it to work with demonic forces as well. Collect on a new moon.
Lake Water:
Lake water is amazing in works concerning emotions, love, memories, or past life regressions. Boil it and drink it to enhance attempts for past life regressions. Collect on waxing moon.
Pond Water:
Use when wanting to bind someone, or to limit their horizons. Keep a flower vase with pond water in it on a table to silence a conversation to those not sitting at it. Collect on a dark moon.
Spring Water:
Spring water is super versatile. Use it instead of tap water.
Dew:
Dew can allow the witch to cast powerful glamours for beauty and youth. It is an important ingredient in love potions. Collect at sunrise during a waxing or full moon.
Self Water:
Fancy word for spit or urine. This one is a little nasty, but it is to be used whenever a spell needs to be tied to the caster.
Simples
Sun Water:
Bask any sort of water in the sun for a full day. Use it for cleansing, to bring positivity into a space, or for glamours of youth.
Moon Water:
Used to power up any spell. Let water sit in the light of a full moon for a full night.
Tobacco Water:
Steep tobacco into water for a week in the fridge. When strained, mix with 100 proof vodka, about 1.5 parts water for 1 part vodka. Use it to cleanse or to offer to spirits when working with them. Can be used to cause addiction in a person.
Saffron Water:
Steep saffron into water and mix 1 part water with 1 part vodka. Use to raise winds by sprinkling it in the air, or rub on your lips before whistling and raising storms.
Rose Water:
Use for love, glamours, and beauty. Steep fresh rose petals in vodka for a period of 4 weeks, and then extract all the liquid from the petals by pressing them until they have lost their color. Cut with 0.5 part water.
Orange Blossom Water:
Use for joy, beauty, cleansing, and sunshine. Prepare in the same way as the rose water.
Lilac Water:
Use lilac water for sleep, dream magic, spirit work, and cleansing. Prepare in the same way you would prepare the other flower waters.
Apple Blossom Water:
Create this by the same manner as the three flower waters above. Use for protection, love, and beauty.
Holly Water:
Holly water is to be used to protect your family. It will prick at intruders, or unwelcomed guests. It will also allow you to always have knoledge of the safety of your family. Simply steep holly leaves in water and mix with vodka. Do not ingest this, as it is poisonous.
Composites
All Bite no Bark Water:
A powerful water used for protection of a space. Mix together storm water, hair of a black dog, dirt of a grave, the ashes of psalm 7, rose thorns, teeth of a canidae, and three holly berries. Pour around a room which you wish to protect, or water protective plants to give their produce an aggressive kick. This water will protect a space with the ferocity of a rabid dog, and will not warn before attacking.
Fiery Wall of Protection Water:
Mix together sun water with three hot peppers, red brick dust, pottasium nitrate (saltpeter), sulfur, and blackthorn pricks. Another like the above, but more passive. Attacker might suffer a rash after encountering it.
Pitch Water:
Use pitch water to stop someone from making any progress. Mix together water from a swamp, gum arabic or acacia, charcoal dust, and chapparal. It can also be used to dissorient. Fair warning, this water is hella sticky.
Fuck Off Water:
Mix together sumac, apple seeds, thorns of a blackberry, cloves and storm water. Use it to repel unwanted people.
Goodbye Lover Water:
Mix together sea water, sumac, cloves, poppy seeds, thorns of a cactus, petals of a hibiscus flower, and saltpeter. Use it to get rid of unwanted courters or lovers, or to make two people break up.

need to make me something like this š

Ā Ā In the lore and history of weather witchery, it was common of weather witches to create and sell knotted rope charms to sailors, as it was believed these charms would help enchant the wind in the shipās favor. These charms were made by venturing to a high-windswept place, and tying certain sailers knots into rope to capture the wind while imbuing them with magick ~ sometimes multiple knots were tied, meant to contain winds of different strengths.
Ā Ā While reading about these wind charms, I was inspired to write a more modern project tutorial on how to make such a charm, though mine will be a touch more decorated! These wind charms can be hung above a porch or in a window to encourage a wind to blow away storm clouds, to represent wind or air in a spell or ritual, to summon a wind (similar to wind whistling), and for any other wind-related uses you might find you need witchcraft-wise.Ā
Ā Ā The first step, of course, is to capture the wind using knot magick ~ The knotted rope will serve as the base of the wind charm. You can begin with a plain rope, or make it thicker or more decorative by braiding or macrame-ing multiple smaller ropes together beforehand. This first step is the longest in the tutorial, as it will take some time to find the right conditions. Traditionally, three single knots are made in a rope ~ But for this tutorial, we are going to be knotting the rope three times, each consisting of more smaller knots, to capture and represent different buildups of wind energy - If you wish, you can replace the knots with different sailors knots, if you know how to do so. Hereās how to do this:
Tied of three, knots capture this breeze
Contained by my hand and quelled upon these skies
The gentle air I seize -Ā For my swift magickal disposition
Tied of five, knots gained of brisk wind
Direct and ardent as I exert itsā energy
With my intent and by my will - Magickally intertwined
Tied of seven, knotted storms of the heavens
Vigorous and powerful,
Energy of formidable wind - Seals my magick of air
(Feel free to replace my chants with your own)
Step 1.Ā āĀ Between the first and second knots, and between the second and third knots, weāll be adding herbs associated specifically with wind magick to keep your charm charged and functional.Ā
In the first empty length of rope, tie a bundle of dried lemongrass or dried anise - both strongly tied to the element of air. Or instead (how I made mine), get a small-ish corked bottle, and add the herbs to the bottle in smaller pieces ~ Attach the bottle into the charm - which I especially enjoy the look of!Ā
In the second empty length of rope below the second knot and above the third, tie in a branch or chunk of alder wood, oak wood, or a bundle of scotch broom. Again, you can break the ingredient(s) into smaller pieces and instead put them into a bottle to attach to the charm if you wish. Both alder and oak were traditionally used in making flutes, whistles, andĀ ābullroarersā for whistling up winds, and scotch broom is used in weather brooms, spells, and charms to call up winds. (Tip: scotch broom is the most connected to weather witchery out of the three, so I suggest finding a place to buy or collect some specially for this charm)
Step 2.Ā āĀ Now that the magickal materials are on the charm, you can decorate it however you like ~ For mine, I attached colorful glass beads and tiny bells; Other items to use connected to wind and the air element include feathers, ribbons, the colors yellow and white, and bits of shining metal or glass, etc. If you worship a deity tied to the weather, skies, or winds, a figure or symbol of them may be added.
Step 3.Ā āĀ Once your charm is to your liking, hang it up on a porch or in a window or doorway. On days when you donāt wish to call or whistle the wind to you, remove the charm ~ You can hang it on a wall for decoration when not in use, or just put it in a bag or box until you need it again.Ā
Personal note: The day I finished making mine and went to hang it in the window, I looked out my bedroom window to see a smallĀ ātornadoā of dust (we get them commonly in the dry seasons out here) quickly form and dispel in the backyard area nearest me!
