~Something You Read: From Rick to Michonne~

“I cannot believe he actually logged into class this morning from his bed! I think he’d just woken up like five minutes before. He could barely hold his eyes open and had bed hair and everything. Who even does that?” Michonne scoffed.

Rick chuckled. “That sounds exactly like something Shane would do.”

“Mr. Horvath even had to tell him to put on a shirt…which got a lot of grumbling from some of the girls.”

“You included?”

Rick outright laughed at the look of disgust Michonne shot him through his phone’s screen.

“Richard Sutton Grimes, I am offended! You know I have better taste than that. No offense to Shane, but it would have to be the end of the world and we’d have to be the last hope for continuation of the human race before I’d even consider him anything other than a smug nuisance.”

“Ouch! So I’ll take that as a no.”

“Take that as a hell no!”

“Michonne Colette Richardson with the potty mouth! I’m gonna tell your mama and daddy.”

“What’s the worst that could happen? I get grounded and confined to the house and not allowed to go out with my friends? Too late, Miss Rona already beat them to that,” Michonne replied glumly.

“Yeah, it sucks. I can’t believe this is how we’re spending our senior year of high school. I thought everything would be back to normal by now.”

“I don’t even know what normal is anymore.  I certainly hope this isn’t our new normal…going to school online, not being able to hang out and only seeing each other “face to face” through a screen in class or during phone calls.”

“I never thought I’d say this…and if you tell my mama, I’ll deny it…but I actually miss school. Not the work,” Rick quickly added. “I miss interacting with everybody, even Eugene and his mullet.”

“Really, Rick? Of all the classmates you could name, you pick Eugene…and his mullet…and not me?”

“You know you’re not just my classmate. You’re my best friend, Michonne. Of course I miss you.”

More than you even know, Rick thought.

~Something Created for You by Me: From Michonne to Rick~

Michonne grabbed the last gift under the tree and handed it to Rick.

“So, I know this gift was supposed to be something I made for you, but I have a small confession to make. I got some help with this one.”

Rick staggered back in exaggerated shock. “Michonne Grimes not following the rules?! I can’t believe it! I better go mark this down on the calendar. First a pandemic and now this.”

“Oh, shut it, funny man. This is one I couldn’t do alone, but I think you’ll really like it. Besides, I had a lot of fun creating it.”

“You did, huh? Who helped you? Please say it wasn’t Andrea. She probably slipped something sharp and dangerous in the bag while you weren’t looking.”

“Rick, just open it.”

“Fine, but if I get cut, you’re gonna help me sue her.” Rick cautiously opened the gift bag and immediately teared up when he pulled out what was inside.

“Michonne…really?”

“Yeah.”

Rick stared at the picture in his hand in wonder. The grainy image of “Baby Grimes” was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

“How long have you known?”

“I just found out officially last week.  I had a feeling and I thought maybe I was…but I didn’t want to say anything until I was sure, especially after last time.”

Rick hugged Michonne to him. “You don’t have to explain anything. I understand.” He pulled back and looked at his wife. “You’re good and the baby’s healthy?”

“Yeah, we’re both great.”

“Thank God.”

“I have another appointment coming up, so we can officially start this journey together.”

“I can’t wait.”

A sudden thought caused Rick to double over with laughter.

“What’s so funny?”

“I just remembered what you said. You got help with this gift.”

Michonne chuckled. “Yep.”

“So, I helped create my own gift.”

Michonne nodded. “I literally couldn’t have done it without you. Do you also remember the other thing I said?”

“Mmhmm…you had a lot of fun creating this gift. I know I sure as hell did.”

“You want to reenact the magic moment tonight?”

“Yeah, but, where? The magic moment could have happened at any number of spots around the house.”

“You’re right.” Michonne shrugged. “Well, I guess to be on the safe side, we’ll have to revisit them all tonight and this weekend.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Rick gazed at the sonogram again with a contented smile. “Thank you, babe. Besides your heart, this is the best gift you have ever given me.”

“Merry Christmas, Rick.”

“Merry Christmas, Michonne,” Rick said with a kiss to his wife’s lips.

Rick leaned down and placed a kiss on Michonne’s belly. “And Merry Christmas to you, too, Baby Grimes.”

~Something You Wear: From Rick to Michonne~

Michonne examined the wrapped box in her lap wondering if Rick had gotten the cashmere sweater she’d put on her list…or maybe the leather joggers.

I hope it’s the joggers. I have an off-the-shoulder sweater that would look so good with them.

“Michonne?”

“Huh?”

“I really need you to open your gift.”

Michonne smiled at Rick seated across from her. His knee was nervously bouncing up and down.

“You’re a little anxious, aren’t you? I’m sure I’ll love whatever it is you got me.”

“I sure hope so.”

Michonne turned her attention back to the gift. She tore open the paper and removed the top of the gift box. She pushed the tissue aside and found a piece of paper with the word “Grimes” written on it.

Michonne stared at the paper in confusion. “Um…Rick, how am I supposed to wear your last name?”

“Well, you start by wearing this.”

Michonne looked up to see Rick now down on one knee, holding out an open ring box.

“Rick?!”

“Michonne, I had all these things I practiced to say but I can’t remember even one word. And, honestly, the only word that really matters right now is the one you say after I ask you this question.”

Rick took a fortifying breath.

“Michonne, will you marry me?”

Momentarily speechless, all Michonne could do was nod through her tears before she found her voice. “Yes! Yes, Rick, of course I’ll marry you!”

Rick hopped up and placed the sparkling solitaire on Michonne’s finger before gathering his new fiancée into an embrace and celebratory kiss.

The couple snuggled together on the couch, each lost in their own blissful thoughts.

“Rick, I cannot believe you. How long have you been planning this?”

“Well, I’ve been planning to marry you since the day we first met.”

Michonne laughed. “Rick, we met on the first day of kindergarten twenty years ago.”

“And I knew twenty years ago that I was gonna marry you.  But I’ve been planning on proposing for a few months now. I wanted to have something big with all of our family and friends around but with everything that’s going on right now…”

“No, this is perfect.” Michonne held up the paper from the box and looked at Rick. “Michonne Grimes, huh?”

“Yeah, I know you’ll wear it well.”

Michonne nodded. “I will because it’s a perfect fit…just like us.”

Giving Thanks (A Richonne Fic) by SBK

A/N:  The holidays have inspired me to write about our favorite couple.  I hope you enjoy.

The rain is coming down in white sheets as Michonne Grimes peeps out of her bedroom window.  She ties the belt of her robe and sighs quietly before looking over to her slumbering husband.  She smiles as she knows he’s awake.  He just doesn’t want to move even though he knows their schedule is very tight today.  She steps to him and leans over to place a hand on his head and a kiss on his cheek.

“Rick, I would love to let you sleep but there’s too much to do today,” she whispers.

He lets out a groan before grasping her arm and pulling her back into the bed with him.  “Just 5 more minutes.”  He wraps a well-muscled arm around her waist, holding her to him.

Spellbound (A Richonne Magical Moment)

A/N: For the Richonnefics October Word Table.  Yes, I’m totally late but better late than never right?  I hope you enjoy.

The cobbled street was busy with activity as excited shoppers moved from vendor to vendor, perusing the different and unique wares, crafts, arts, and designs.  The newly organized trade market was off to a grand start and one particular shopper could not be prouder.  She is the one who pushed her friends towards entrepreneurship, knowing that the items she usually received for free would be a huge draw for a lot of customers.  She looks around with a knowing smile, imagining what the success could possibly lead to.  Even the nearby bakery, diner, and bookstore were getting more business.

She steps to a vendor she doesn’t recognize with an array of beautiful handmade scarves.  She is a sucker for silky, smooth material to wrap herself in.  She touches a sheer, teal colored scarf, allowing the material to slide over her open hand.  She gasps as a tingling sensation starts from the top of her head and races down her body, leaving her slightly shaken.  She blinks several times and places a hand to her stomach to calm herself.  She looks to her left and then to her right, wondering what could have caused such a sudden and never before experienced reaction.

A spirited laugh rings out and the sensation returns eliciting another gasp as she swings around, searching for the source of the laughter.  Her eyes roam the square and she hones in as the laugh sounds again. This time, lighter but drawing her in all the same.  She spots a dark haired gentleman seated at a table on the cemented walk right outside the eatery.  He is accompanied by three others and they are all dressed in law enforcement uniforms.

One Step at a Time (Richonne Date Night- September)

Michonne sighed in contentment as she snuggled deeper into Rick’s embrace. “I had a great time tonight.”

“Me, too. I hate that I have to cut the evening short on the one night we can actually stay out past ‘curfew’,” Rick joked while tightening his hold on Michonne.

Rick and Michonne had been a couple for four months. They’d started dating towards the end of the previous school year. Since their kids had spent much of the summer away from home either at camps or spending time with family, the pair had been able to spend a lot of time early on really getting to know each other and their relationship grew serious quickly. Now that school was back in session, the single parents tried to spend as much time with each other as their busy work and home schedules allowed.

Tonight would have been a rare date night when they could stay out as long as they wanted. It was the Saturday before Labor Day and their kids were spending the weekend with Rick and Michonne’s former spouses. Unfortunately, the couple wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the night because Rick had an early shift at the King County Sheriff’s Office the next day.

Michonne sat up to look at Rick. “Do you have to leave right this minute? There was something I wanted us to do tonight.”

“What did you have in mind?” Rick asked. His mind and heart started racing at Michonne’s words.

Daddy Days (Part IV)

RJ

Rick had become an expert at disguising his emotions over the past six years, but he couldn’t mask the nervousness that threatened to overwhelm him at the moment.

One boot clad foot tapped faster and faster against the floor. When he began tapping his fingers against the arm of the chair with one hand, he felt a comforting squeeze on the other.

Rick looked beside him and instantly felt a familiar calm at the smile that greeted him.

“Everything is going to be fine.”

“I keep telling myself that, but I’m afraid something is going to come along at the last minute and mess everything up or I’m going to wake up and realize this is all a dream,”” Rick sighed. It’s happened before.”

For years, Rick had dreamed of this very scenario. Every night he’d see her smile. Feel the elation and the relief. It all felt so real. But when he’d wake to find himself still held captive away from his family, grief engulfed to the point that in the early days, the bleakest days, he’d sometimes hoped he’d go to sleep and just stay in his dream world with his family forever.

He’d just wanted to go home.

The pain of being apart from his family never lessened over the years, but Rick’s determination to reunite with them grew with every day that passed. And now, part of his dream had come true. He was back with his wife.

Rick marveled at how the pain…the grief…the longing began to melt away in his heart the instant he saw Michonne…even as his mind tried to convince him that she wasn’t really there. But the moment she touched him…and he knew she was real, knew it wasn’t a dream…renewed him in an instant.

Now it was time for the rest of his dreams to come true.

Daddy Days (Part III)

Judith

“Come on, Daddy. Let’s dance.” Judith tried to pull Rick from his recliner. “We have to practice.”

Rick looked over to his wife for help.

Michonne chuckled. “You heard our girl. You have to practice. So get up and get your groove on, Daddy.”

Ever since her Honey Bee troupe announced their Daddy-Daughter dance, Judith had been beside herself with excitement…and determination. She was excited to dress up and spend time with her daddy. But there was also going to be a dance contest with prizes given out and Judith was determined for them to win first place.

She’d carved out time every night for practice, or as Rick called it Baby Bootcamp. If she didn’t become a dancer, Rick was certain Judith would flourish as a drill sergeant.

“Alright, Daddy. I’ve found some more dances we could do. Look, this one just came out.”

Now on his feet, Rick stared at Judith’s phone as a teenage girl went through a series of arm and hip movements while a woman proclaimed herself to be a savage on the song playing in the background.

Rick shook his head. “Judith, I don’t know who you think is going to be doing those moves, but it certainly won’t be you or me. Where did you even learn about this, anyway? You’re nine-years-old.”

“Uh…that’s sort of my fault,” Michonne fessed up. “I was in our bedroom practicing the dance when Judith walked in,” Michonne cut her eyes at her daughter, “without knocking and saw me.”

“Why were you practicing the dance?” Rick asked.

Michonne shrugged. “I was trying to see if I still got it.”

Rick eyed his wife. “Well, if you wanted to know that, all you had to do was look in the mirror or ask me. You most definitely still got it. In fact, you never lost it and are getting more of it every day.”

“Daddy, be gross with Mama later, please,” Judith interrupted. “We have to practice for the dance now.”

Rick gave Michonne a wink and turned back to their exasperated daughter.

“Judith, we are doing a basic box step for the dance.”

“What about the dance contest? We have to come up with a routine.”

“How about the Cha Cha Slide or the Weeble?”

“The Wobble,” Michonne corrected.

“Yeah, the Wobble. Your mama taught me how to do those at our wedding.”

Judith looked at her mother and sighed. “We are so coming in last place.”

Daddy Days (Part II)

Andre

“Do you see anything you like?”

Andre looked up at his mother, who had four-year-old Judith perched on her hip, and shrugged.

Carl came running up holding a card. “I found something! I think Dad will love it.”

“That’s great, Carl. Why don’t you take Judith and see if you can pick out a Father’s Day for her to give your dad?”

“Okay.” The thirteen-year-old took his little sister in his arms before he turned to his little brother. “You need help, too, Dre?”

“I’ll help Dre out. Then we can go grab some food and head home. That sound like a plan?”

“Yep. Can we get pizza from Glenn’s?”

“Of course.”

“Great! Let’s go, Judith.”

Carl walked back down the aisle with his sister.

Michonne looked at her eight-year-old son. “You having a hard time picking out a card for Rick?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Andre shrugged again. “I don’t know. Nothing seems right.”

Daddy Days (Part I)

Carl

Rick felt a tug from the small hand clasped in his own and looked down.

“Daddy, look! Cows!”

Rick’s young son, Carl, was currently obsessed with all things cow related.

“You wanna get a closer look?”

“Yes!” Carl nodded excitedly causing his dad’s deputy hat to wobble comically on the toddler’s head.

Rick walked Carl up to the fence surrounding Old Man Ross’ cow pasture. He was about to lift Carl onto his shoulders for a better view when a cow sauntered over to the fence and stopped right in front of them. It looked three-year-old Carl straight in the eye for several moments, studying him. A clearly enraptured Carl stayed miraculously still as if he were afraid any movement would end the moment. Seconds later, its curiosity seemingly satisfied, the cow let out a moo, then walked away and settled back under a cluster of trees with the other cattle.

Carl looked up at his father and smiled so big his eyes were nearly closed.

“Daddy, how did you do that?”

“Do what, son?”

“Make the cow come talk to me.”

“I didn’t do that, son. You did. She came over here because of you.”

Carl gasped. “Really?”

Rick picked the toddler up in his arms. “Yep. She just had to come over and see the best little boy in the world up close.”

“I’m the best little boy in the world?”

Rick nodded. “Yep and I’m glad you’re my little boy. I love you, Carl.”

Carl hugged his daddy’s neck with all his might. “Love you, Daddy.”

On the slow trek back home, Carl sat on his daddy’s shoulders and talked all about his new cow friend.

“Can we come back and see her tomorrow, Daddy?”

“When can come back as many times as you want, son.”

“Yay!” Carl exclaimed. “Daddy?”

“Yeah, son?”

“You’re the best daddy in the world.”

***

Later, as he watched Carl sleep with a stuffed toy cow tucked under his arm, Rick smiled to himself. Rick knew his son likely wouldn’t remember the details of this day when he got older, but he hoped Carl would keep the feelings of the day…the happiness and the love…with him forever.

Feast by SBK

Michonne is awakened by the sound of Rick retching in the adjacent bathroom.  She frowns with concern and immediately leaves the bed to join him and offer some comfort.  She drops to her knees beside him as he hovers over the toilet and rubs his back softly.

They’d had dinner over at Sasha and Daryl’s earlier that night so maybe a dish among Sasha’s feast didn’t agree with him.

“Are you ok?” She asks softly.

Rick inhales deeply and exhales as he accepts the hand towel she offers him.  He shakes his head slowly, wiping his mouth.  “I don’t know.  Must’ve been something I ate.  I hate this crap.  I haven’t been sick like this since….”  He trails off and pauses as he thinks back to the last time he was that ill.

“Michonne?”

“Yeah?”

“Babe, the last time I got this sick, we found out you were pregnant.  Remember Denise said I got the morning sickness instead of you,” he reminds her.

He watches as his wife sits up straight, her eyes darting from left to right as she frowns in concentration.  Rick Jr. was only 13 months old.

“Rick?”

“Yeah?”

“Well…..shit.”
