You know it’s him before anything is said between you. He’s been your best friend for so long that you can detect that it’s Alex Turner from the sound of him walking across the wooden decking as the song you’re listening to mellows.

You only know it’s him because he’s walked lightly towards you, obviously trying not to distract you as you sit on the edge of the short deck that keeps you above the water.

Alex sits down behind you and pulls you back into him while you both watch the sun set. You give him an earphone and listen to whatever Italian score you have on today and you’re both just peacefully coexisting with each other.

You had your sketchbook out here with you and you’d been drawing on and off for a while. But after a particularly painful shooting pain running up your arm about ten minutes ago, you decided to sit and peacefully watch the sunset instead.

You can’t help but marvel at the reflection in the water of the orange and red colours in the sky. And now leaning back against Alex, just means you relax even more.

“God it’s good to be back.”

It’s a strange feeling walking into your home after being away from it for 6 months. But you have to admit that it feels so refreshing to be back.

Last time you went away with them it was only for 2 months and despite you not coming back to your Sheffield home afterwards, getting into your bed at your Aunt’s house in Wilmslow was pure bliss. Not just necessarily because you were away from Alex that time, but because it was familiar and comfy. You were home.

“Right, I didn’t think we were that bad.” Alex chuckles, putting your suitcase down in your lounge for you.

Unable to stop yourself, you giggle at that and spin yourself around to face your best friend once again.

“You weren’t,” You promise, “But my own space again that isn’t a seven by three coffin is wonderful.”

That day on the beach, he made you feel so safe and he did everything to cheer you up afterwards. Once he felt assured enough that you were okay, he ended up swimming back alone just to grab his black top to bring back out to you so you didn’t have to swim back and feel insecure around the other lads.

You made him promise before the both of you went back that he would not tell Breana that you were upset, and you were thankful when he agreed. She didn’t do it on purpose, she just wanted to bring you out of your shell and she wanted to do it in a playful way that a year ago you would have been all up for.

She didn’t know how bad your mental health had been recently, regardless of what the other boys had said. The only ones who knew the extent of everything were Alex and Y/B/F - and even then you and Alex hadn’t been addressing your flirting and kissing.

A detail that you hadn’t yet told anyone whilst being on tour with the lads for the two months you’d been away, is that every time you were travelling on the bus at night, you hated sleeping. Because after the first few times back in March, you knew a nightmare was impending.

You don’t know whether it was because you were in a moving vehicle, or if it was some form of PTSD. It may have even been the process of trying to get yourself over Matty, which you’d been trying your best to do over the past fortnight since you’d briefly seen him and Adam at the festival. Regardless, if you slept on the bus whilst it was moving, it resulted in nightmares.

That is why you decided to go to sleep last night as soon as you got back on the bus, hoping that if you got to sleep before you started moving, that the awful dreams would be kept at bay. But of course, that didn’t happen.

In the weeks after the accident everything was very difficult at first, but it slowly started to improve. Getting you back home and into your flat was an exhausting thing in itself, despite everyone being there to help you.

The first night back in your own surroundings was more blissful than you’d ever thought your flat could be. The accident happened on the 8th and you were finally getting back into your flat on the 21st.

You felt much better in the hospital once Matty was back with you, and you were so thankful that he was safe and okay. Your Mum, your Aunt, and your cousin stayed the night you were back home.

Both sisters shared the bed in your spare room whilst Adam took the settee. Matty shared with you despite his protests saying that you needed the room and should have the bed to yourself.

But you wanted him with you and you had the best nights sleep with him beside you.

Since your anniversary life has been hectic.

Matty wasn’t joking when he said that Jamie wanted an EP out in two weeks which meant that your workload doubled in the space of a day. Of course, you didn’t mind. You’d been making merch for them for years so the fact that your recent The 1975 designs were actually going to be used and sold made you really excited.

You got all the lads together in your flat the day after your anniversary and went though covers with them, because you knew they all needed to be happy with them. Matty loved to throw ideas out and whilst they were really good, this was about all of them, and you had to make sure they loved it, too.

You all sat down and designed the album cover first and it was a quick decision between them all that they wanted it to be a self-titled album. So through their direction, mostly Matty’s, it was decided that a box was needed and so was the band name.

You’re in his flat as Alex had insisted that you both spend some time together before he was heading back out to tour Suck It And See which was being released in two months. You probably wouldn’t see him in person again until they toured the UK in October, which was gutting.

Their warm up shows started next month and then they had a bunch of press to do before they were on their first North America tour and then they were heading everywhere for festivals. They were so busy that they couldn’t come home and see you on your birthday which was a blow to your heart but you’d rather their tour went well.

You just missed not having your best friends around for your birthday. You guessed Y/B/F and your Manchester bunch would have to do this year.

That didn’t mean you didn’t miss having the lads around though. You really missed having Alex around.

2009 seemed to be a much happier year than your previous two years. For once you were actually content all year round, with nothing sad going on in your life.

There seemed to only be happy occasions.

The rest of 2008 played out with Alex leaving for New York around mid-October, and it left you devastated. You thought you’d be alright because you had the other Monkeys around you to help you out when you were a bit down about it, because they were like your extended family.

But that’s not how it happened.

When Alex left, they all followed him. They were writing and recording their next album over there - you were foolish to think Alex would come back over here to record like they had in the past.

So, you were essentially on your own for the end of 2008, with none of your friends around you except for Y/B/F on the weekends, as she was busy planning a UK tour for a smaller band that Domino assigned her to. You were so proud of your friends, but you did feel alone most of the time.

Two weeks after Matty came to your flat you found yourself back in Manchester, and you and a certain curly haired boy had already been testing the waters. You’d been over for a few days and you two had already had your fair share of kisses and secret rendezvous in either your room or his.

Nothing had yet gone past what it did the night that you’d first kissed. Maybe there had been a little more touching on Matty’s part, or maybe there had been a little bit of dry humping, but it was still all very PG-13. Or it was, until you were at a party of one of Matty’s school mates.

Some kisses had been shared throughout the night, much to Adam’s disgust. He’d at first been fuming at Matty when it came out about you cheating on your boyfriend with him, but after you explained how you felt about it, Adam seemed to let it go slightly.

But you both move past Adam’s looks of disgust and carry on with your little kisses. They get a little longer each time another drink is consumed, but for most of the party you’re just getting on how you used to.

Matty was chilling with his mates and you were with George’s sister and her other friends that you’ve met from the summers you’d previously been coming down. They were a fun group of people, and you were really glad they accepted you into their group each time you came back.

Thankfully the group had grown past wanting to play drinking games, so you had a nice, normal house party of just drinking with your mates. And of course a good house party wouldn’t be complete over here in Manchester until one of your boys was lying on the ground looking like they were about to fall asleep.

This time it was Matty.

It had been three weeks since you’d got back home and a lot of things had happened. You’d gone back to University and finished your degree, meaning that you were now a very qualified woman with a bright future ahead of you.

Your place on your Masters course had also been confirmed which meant that you’d be getting even more qualifications in a year’s time. As good as all that was though, your life hadn’t been all sunshine and rainbows.

Yes, you’d finished your degree but you’d also lost almost four years of your life.

Telling Peter didn’t go very well to say the least. You told him the day after you got back as you just wanted to get it over and done with. You went to your meeting with your lecturer in the morning and then headed straight to Peter’s afterwards.

A situation which ended in a shouting match, and you leaving with angry tears falling down your face. You got your phone out of your pocket and dialled the first number on your speed dial, as their house was closest.

“Alex, are you back home?” You ask, trying your best to hold your tears back.

Matty’s 15th birthday passed in a complete blur. He didn’t care at all that he was 15 on the 8th of April, the only date he cared about this year was June 25th.

Your 18th birthday. And the birthday party that you’d invited them all too.

You’d invited them when you were last on a Skype call with them and your Aunt and Uncle had agreed to bring them all over for the party. Matty couldn’t contain his excitement very well when you invited him over the call.

Matty was a little embarrassed for saying yes so quickly but he quickly brushed it off with a little joke. But inside his head Matty was Mr Serotonin Man.

He’d never been more overjoyed to be invited somewhere in his life. He couldn’t wait to see you again.

Over the past year he’d missed you more than he’d ever let on. Matty always thought back to the summer he shared with you, teaching you how to skate, talking about the band and he missed speaking to someone who had a genuine interest in it.

Everything about you, he missed. And yeah that was probably really weird to admit out loud, so he never did.

Not to George, not to Ross and most definitely not to Adam. Matty was sure that Adam would try and disown him because he was still very touchy about the jokes about Matty actually fancying you.

So it was needless to point out, despite everyone being able to see it on Matty’s face, that he was excited to be going to your 18th birthday party.
