okay uh the minecraft end poem was WAY too heavily and comforting and life changing for eight year old me to be reading and comprehending after killing a giant dragon in a video game and its been years and it still makes me cry

“and the universe said you are not alone and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code and the universe said I love you because you are love. And the game was over and the player woke up from the dream. And the player began a new dream. And the player dreamed again, dreamed better. And the player was the universe. And the player was love. You are the player. Wake up.”

I honestly believe that people who lost their childhood, teenage years to mental illness and/or trauma are so strong for still being here. Especially once you’re about 18-25 and trying to relearn how to be in society and healthy and human.

Especially when you decide to work towards getting better.

Especially when your life isn’t where you wished it would be.

Stay alive okay? If you lost your youth, I’m sorry and I’m so proud of you for still being here. Keep fighting. Your best years are ahead of you.

if we’re doing this, my main concern with this season is that…i don’t feel the relationships have much depth. yaz and ryan are these kind of blandly amicable acquaintances. graham and ryan’s relationship is slightly more substantial as step-grandson and grandfather in mutual mourning, but even that connection feels very surface-level. they share stray remarks about grace, but not…too much beyond that. ryan finally calling graham granddad was meant to be impactful, but it feels unearned since ryan wasn’t even there to witness graham making the difficult decision to leave pseudo grace behind to prioritize ryan’s safety. why would that have such a strong effect on him? we never even see graham tell him what happened.

having three companions should theoretically show us three unique relationships with the doctor, but none of the companions’ relationships with thirteen feel distinct from each other, it’s all…very simplistic. they share this earnest, blanket approval & admiration of thirteen but none of their travels and nothing she says or does seems to complicate their relationship to & perception of her…there’s been no genuinely meaningful or emotional exchange between any of these companions and the doctor tbh…and there were so many opportunities to create those moments. graham and ryan in particular are in mourning, and thirteen is at the very least ‘involved’ in that loss if not directly responsible. it would have been nice to see either one of them grow to resent her based on that association, and it could have culminated nicely in ‘it takes you away’ but because these relationships feel so flat and undeveloped, grace’s cameo lacked emotional impact…like, i’ve grieved before and it’s messy and illogical and intense, and for 2/3 of your companions to experience such a massive, recent loss and react so mildly…feels like a waste of a death.

99% of what makes doctor who so special is seeing how much the doctors adore their companions. rtd is obviously, rightfully famous for this but even in moffat era, as much as i hate to praise him for literally anything…just look at the evolution of clara and twelve’s relationship. the emotional highs and lows-the heated argument, the moments of pure fondness and affection, the shared development, the self-sacrifice. for all of that era’s faults, you never doubt the strength of their relationship and this becomes the driving force of the series and permeates nearly everything they say and do. by comparison, thirteen and her companions just give the impression of a group of casual friends going on an adventure…that’s the premise that was set in the first episode and it truly doesn’t seem to have developed beyond that. i don’t get the sense that thirteen loves any of these people on a deep, individual level. i’m sure she would die for them, but then, she would just as readily die for a total stranger so that’s not saying much.

i would almost prefer that they picked one companion and focused more closely on their relationship with thirteen, flaws and all. this just feels very sanitized? which is kind of disappointing!
