Zebrafish - Biomedical Sciences Best Asset?

The zebrafish (danio rerio) have been a big name in the world of biomedical research for around 15 years now. The University of Queensland was one of the first places to begin studying the strange stream dwellers - and the use of their labs has only risen. You see, the benefits of these fish - which at first glance seem somewhat unimpressive - is that their embryos are both transparent and grown outside of the body. This means that scientists can manipulate their genes in such a way that they can model human diseases and observe the changes in these animals. Cool, right? (Photo: Janelia Research Institute, Ashton, VA)

Additionally:

  • They’re small
  • Easy and cheap to maintain
  • They can reliably produce hundreds of eggs a week
  • They have the same major organs as humans making them a good model
  • 84 per cent of genes known to be associated with human disease have a zebrafish counterpart.
  • They can repair heart muscle!!
  • The zebrafish genome has been fully sequenced to a high quality degree
  • They’re cute as fuck

zebrafish are actually the most amazing little fish, literally i spent eleven weeks working with them and now they’re one of my fave species to cross this earth.

when they’re embryos they’re almost completely transparent so you can observe their circulatory systems and other organ systems develop - and there are lines that have been developed that remain clear into adulthood - there’s one thats called casper!

their embryonic development has been studied so closely that you can follow their development to the hour or the number of cells within the embryo pretty precisely

researchers have developed fish which have different fluorescent proteins - i was working with fish that had green fluorescent neutrophils and red fluorescent macrophages, and there are many different fluorescent tags that can be used to visualise all different types of proteins and when they’re embryos you can look at them down a microscope whilst they’re still alive and swimming around and see all the fluorescence

they only mate when you set them up in particular conditions so you can house males and females in the same tanks

they lay their eggs as close to when it first becomes light as possible, so basically first thing in the morning

they’re tropical fish so they always have a nice, comfortable, warm environment

guys, i just love zebrafish so much <3

My babies! (We can share them, right?) I worked with zebrafish embyros during my research project for my first degree. You really can time their development exactly. I think we owe a lot to the animal models we study,  and it’s amazing how much a few species have contributed to our understanding of biomedical science. I certainly look back on researching their development with fondness. As a former aquarian, I’ve also had them as pets. Cute little things, and very underrated.

Wait, tumblr mobile allows photos to be added now??? (In reply to your tags)

Yeah mine must have just updated because I noticed it for the first time today and indeed Tumblr mobile let me add an image in an reblog like a functional piece of software that understands how people use its platform

It works

Fucking finally

Mammals both produce milk and have hair. Ergo, a coconut is a mammal.

I know you’re being facetious, but this is an actual issue with morphology-based phylogeny.

*leans over and whispers to person beside me* what are they talking about

*leans over and whispers back*  Human ability to quantify and categorize natural phenomena is sketchy at best and wildly misleading at worst

consider the coconut

this reminds me of that time Plato defined humans as “featherless bipeds” and Diogenes ran in with a plucked chicken screaming “BEHOLD A MAN!”

i love how you say “it reminds me of that time” like you were there.

Boys, protect girls. Call people out when they make offensive jokes. Stand up to those who treat girls like objects. Walk a girl home if she feels unsafe. Listen to them and be considerate of their feelings. Destroy that myth that women are inferior.

Girls, protect boys. Call people out when they make fun of a boy for showing emotion. Stand up to those who tell boys to ‘man up.’ Support boys who enjoy feminine things. Destroy the myth that men can’t be victims and that women can’t be predators.

Boys, protect boys. Protect your bros from violent relationships. Comfort your bros when they need somebody. Stand up for your bros who are ridiculed for not wanting/liking sex. Destroy the myth that two men can’t be close without it being “gay.”

Girls, protect girls. Defend sisters who enjoy having sex. Stand up to those who define sisters for what they wear. Don’t judge your sister’s worth from how many boyfriend’s she’s had. Destroy the myth that girls have to constantly compete with each other.

Protect everyone from the patriarchy.

Hallelujah.

Amen.

Fucking important. Idc.
