Anonymous asked:

how do manatees even survive as a species if they're way too peaceful. somehow nothing wants to eat them. not gators or sharks or whales

it's quite simple, they're their ecosystem's version of a megafauna grazing mammal! they're simply too large for most predators to bother. they are, in fact, fucking huge.

see, manatees don't actually live out in the open ocean. they live in rivers, estuaries, and shallow seagrass bays like this:

so the thing is, large macropredator sharks and superpredators like killer whales don't go here! they stay out in open deep water, so they never really cross paths with manatees in the first place.

there ARE sharks here, but they're small! adult manatees are completely out of their prey size range, and they're more interested in fish anyway.

alligators do live here also, but even a very large alligator can't really dream of preying on an adult manatee! again, they're simply too big.

so, yeah. this is just another case of "this mammal is able to get away with being a gentle giant by simply growing too large for any predator in its area to touch" and I think that's beautiful.

putting you were on blast here because I wanted to answer this- there's a couple of reasons that this doesn't happen!

first- grabbing a bite and fleeing might work for cookie cutter sharks and lampreys, but it just isn't how alligators or american crocodiles hunt. their method is to drown an entire animal and then tear chunks off to swallow, which obviously doesn't work with manatees.

second- even if an alligator DID take a snap at an adult manatee, good fucking luck to it to get through the Bone Torso to even get the bite off in the first place!

(it's not getting through the Bone Torso)

ICE HERE WE GO

i’ve said it before but i am obsessed with this episode. it’s so good. one of my favorite cases & the msr moments are some of my favorite (the way i love the slow build up is embarrassing but i sincerely love every damn step they take in their partnership & relationship). the paranoia, the fear, the trust, the *care* — beautiful

honestly advertising is so fukcing wasteful not even just in the convincing you to buy shit you never actually wanted but like

how much electricity is wasted displaying ads that could've gone to keeping houses warm. How much paper is produced just to be turned into pamphlets and ads that will just be thrown away. how much internet bandwith is wasted just on the amount of ads that are on the internet nowadays. How many hours worth of labor went into producing ads that are going directly into my adblocker or my waste bin that could've been time spent doing literally ANYTHING useful?

Dana Scully, The X Files, s3e18 (Teso Dos Bichos)

Fun fact about this episode: Gillian Anderson is allergic to cats, so the cat that attacks Scully is actually a puppet.
