I had a glass of whiskey and here’s what I want to say.
I fell in love with Sailor Moon in the year 1999. That is almost 20 years ago. There were several reasons I was drawn to it. The action was cool. The animation was different from anything I had seen before. The foreign language was interesting to me.
But the main reason I fell for Sailor Moon so hard because it was queer, it was magical, and it was feminist as fuck.
I have made many friends through the sailor-community. The universe is so dense - from comics, to anime, to musicals, to live action, to updated comics, to new anime, to new musicals, to new stage works, to merchandising out the goddamn ass. We all have particular favourites that resonate with us.
Over the years, I’ve met countless sailor moon fans who didn’t like certain parts of it. And that’s fine. I don’t like parts of it. It can be overly childish. Certain plot holes aren’t fun to explore. The commercial side of it is exhausting. We all have our likes and dislikes.
But the one thing I cannot stand are Sailor Moon fans who selectively ignore what it is. A queer work of art. A magical universe. A feminist narrative through and through.
As a white cisgender man, there is a world of artwork made specifically for me with easy accessibility. But there is a world of artwork not made for me. That does not make it less valid, relevant, or meaningful. If anything, it makes such work more important to me, because I have to challenge myself to find it, to process it, and to understand it.
You do not have to be queer, magical, or feminist to enjoy the stories of Sailor Moon. But to ignore, minimize, or exclude the queer, magical, or feminist narratives is missing the entire point of the story.
