Something I’ve noticed about Hawaii Five-0

I can count, on one hand, the amount of cases that explicitly mention the victim being raped.

And I know, statistically, that that isn’t great representation because, well, I’m sure they would have come across more than that since they’ve done everything from blackmail to terrorist attacks.

BUT. It’s kind of fucking nice to be watching a show and not have to hear about these horrible things happening to women. It’s awesome that they’ve had episodes with strippers and models and there hasn’t been a single judgemental comment aimed at the women. That they have characters of both sexes admiring each other without being creepy or sleazy.

AND. It’s *really* fucking nice that they’ve had numerous female leads, even female leads who get kidnapped and threatened, and they haven’t thrown in a rape plot because it would make a story. They’ve shown these beautiful, powerful women take a beating, get shot at, make hard choices about life and death, but they haven’t reduced them to a victim for someone (the male leads) to save.

So yeah, at this point, Hawaii Five-0 could be seen as queer-baiting if you’re a McDanno shipper. Because two male leads calling each “babe” is either a really nice way of showing two strong “manly” men embracing their softer sides or it’s riding a line they should have just crossed years ago. But they are doing something right. They are showing that women can be brave, and strong, and powerful, as well as girly, and scared, and need help sometimes. In fact, *all* of their leads have had real actual breakdowns on screen, because just because a guy is a Navy SEAL, doesn’t mean he doesn’t cry with relief after being rescued after days of torture. And just because a girl is young and inexperienced, doesn’t mean she can’t kick ass with intent.

One of the many reasons I love this show.

Speak the truth, girl.

Thank you Kaps, Jim snd Jason for the knowledge and new love of the deeper parts of the ocean. I spent all my time below on both dives with these two who I happily trust my life to. DANNY WILLIAMS TO STEVE MCGARRETT:

“I’LL GIVE YOU A HUG, I’LL GIVE YOU A KISS, PICK A BASE”

I AM BESIDE MYSELF. I AM CRYING. I AM LAUGHING. I AM DYING. I AM SO ALIVE. I AM NOT MAKING SENSE. THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME.

And naturally, Steve took the hug. Not because he didn’t want a kiss from Danny, but because he’s a SEAL-turned-sorta-cop and his outdated masculinity didn’t allow anything public display of affections more than a manly hug. Danny had told him time after time that Steve needed to evolve but it was a slow progress.

So when Steve pulled Danny into his arms and Danny was double-patting his back habitually, he whispered into Danny’s ears, “I’m not forfeiting the kiss. I’m reserving my right for the kiss till we’re home.”

Steve: “He wanted me to tell you that he loved you, Mar, that he should have said it more and that he was sorry.”

Mary: “Sorry for what? Completely letting us down? Sending us off when we were teenagers? I mean, it’s a little late.”
