FEB 7, 2018 / an easy & slow morning a few weeks ago. i got a print from one of my favourite artists and put it up right away. also finished a lengthy journal entry with a large cup of coffee!! :~)
it hasn’t been a great half term for me really :/ went on a crazy night out with my best friend and got an unconditional from Nottingham which were both fab but have been stressing about an aptitude test and mocks 😭 and also trying to get through some Greek art essays before school starts up again tomorrow :/
me in the middle of an art piece: WOW I wish i knew how to fucking DRAW
shoutout to international students who didn’t grow up speaking english but are now doing complex readings and writing essays in their second/third language and being held to the same standards as native english speakers, i never hear anyone talking about it but that’s hard as fuck

writing conclusions in papers is like the stupidest thing ever though like what’s the point of dedicating an entire paragraph to “so yeah i know you just read my paper but this is a summarization of what you read in case you need to be reminded about what you just read” like why can’t the paper just end
I keep seeing this post and similar ones, and if y'all’s teachers and professors have left you with the idea that a conclusion is a summary, they have failed you in a big way.
Your conclusion is your “so what’s the fucking point” section. You’ve given you’re reader a lot of info and now they need to know why they care. Depending on the type of paper you should be giving a plan of action, explaining how this knowledge changes our understanding of the topic, link your paper to other disciplines, suggest further areas of study, etc.
One of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever received is that if you can’t envision yourself dropping the mic and strutting off stage at the end of your conclusion then it’s probably not strong enough.
Wednesday: Jan 17, 2018 (Day 17)
I finally analyzed the data from my hourly OD readings from yesterday only to find out that the growth is INCREDIBLY slow, which was very wrong for this particular strain at these conditions. I double checked the protocol for the growth medium with Colin and Gennady and found that I did not add a very important component for growth. To do that, I have filter sterilize and we are out of filters…
So my project is getting pushed back a bit, which is just as well because I found out that I was up first for lab presentation. I’ve finished my final paper today and will be starting the actual presentation making tomorrow. I am incredibly anxious about this because my PI can be highly critical. If he asks me something I have no idea about, I think I will probably burst out in tears in front of everyone in lab.
Things that went right today:
- Snow!
- Got A LOT of recreational reading done
- Learned a new step in ballet
