Is Warty's trance a proper ability-ability, or just a trait of his species?

Avatar

It is a type of defense mechanism which intelligent seafolk develop. While they are not exactly like abilities in terms of taking shape based on the user's imagination, they function similarly enough in being a way for the body to defend itself from danger. They are not "customizable" like an ability is in a sense, and they don't originate from the soul after an awakening. They are also more uniform and shared between members across the same seafolk type.

Different seafolk types have different defensive mechanisms. One example described in Icicle Bay Getaway is Mermaids having natural melodious voices that can be used to manipulate listeners, which were formerly used as a way to draw in unsuspecting sailors to their doom - before humans made peace with intelligent seafolk.

Squids like Warty often have patterned, hypnosis-inducing parts meant to ward off dangerous individuals. For Warty, this part is in the eyes, but it could be a body marking elsewhere. Note that the actual hypnosis effect is temprary and fleeting, and is easier to break away from, unlike a proper mind-manipulation ability may be.

Hope that answers you!

In the glimpse of the world we see during shatter does anything exist outside of the boundaries of the map? Like is the world some sort of disc rather then a globe? Similarly how far up can a winged fly? Could they just see ya out of the solar system or something

I prefer to show you the answer to this in-comic eventually.

Small Oceanfalls-Related Details FAQ

Hello! I have written up a list of answers to question about some things in Oceanfalls that I've been asked to clarify several times, so hopefully this clears any small confusions up.

There are unmarked spoilers in these answers from the start of Oceanfalls up to the newest page here, so tread with caution.

Everything is contained below the cut.

has there ever been anyone with a necromancy ability raising dead n shit

Not more than can be counted on a single hand in the entire history of the universe up to Oceanfalls, probably!

Revival of the dead is an incredibly rare occurrence. If accomplished, they certainly do not return in the best of shape, nor can they live again for long. There is only one example of such a thing right now, and it was only accomplished because of the incredible amount of potential that lies in a celestial's wish. This is not an ability that can be held by anybody ordinary.

As for the logistics of it, revived souls effectively re-possess their dead bodies which continue to decay, so they are basically animating rotting flesh as a puppet. When the decay process completes, the soul will no longer have a vessel to possess, and the mind will cease functioning, which fully ends the revival.

Since we're on the topic of revival, I should mention that healers cannot revive. Nino cannot bring back the dead with his ability. The revival described in this post is completely separate and is many levels beyond the healing abilities we're seeing in Oceanfalls.

I realized I might've misunderstood Anon's original question, so I'm writing a more comprehensive follow-up to this answer here.

My original answer concerns only the full revival of someone who has died. For the purposes of complete resurrection, note that a person is only considered whole when they possess their original mind, body, and soul at once.

Hence, a full revival must involve bringing back the deceased's soul into their body to house it & have their mind control it again. This is near-impossible to accomplish as stated in the original answer.

For something more like necromancy, which I'll define as reanimating a soulless corpse like a puppet, that is a possible ability for anyone to awaken given the right circumstances! They could raise a dead-zombie-army as their minions under some kind of limitation, such as a time-limit or a focus gauge, similar to the limitations we see imposed on people's abilities in Oceanfalls.

Necromancy and similar powers would be classified as conducting abilities, where physical dead-bodies are influenced and controlled through the user's mind.

That's it for the answer to Anon's question. I got a few more inquiries related to this on the Oceanfalls Discord, which I'm gonna address here below the cut!

Wait, why doesn't Solis enjoy history? Was he forced into being a nerd instead of coming into it naturally, not enjoying history being a common trait of those who were forced into being nerds/scholars? What type of nerd is he then, if not an ultimate, general purpose Nerd

It's not that he dislikes history per se, but it's also not something he particularly enjoys. He's the type who studies history only because it feels compulsory to do so, especially to honor important historical figures of the monster world.

You can treat him as a general purpose nerd still! It's just that his enjoyment of nerdy stuff lies mostly in subjects that involve active problem-solving like mathematics, rather than knowing and memorizing facts such as historical details.

does kotori go spear fishing or does she use a fishing rod

she does fish right

Unfortunately anon, she does not. Although there are fishing spots in the monster world, Kotori does not live near any of them. Seafood is also considered a bit of a delicacy there, which puts it beyond her paygrade.

In short, that spear's purpose is only to stab people!

What is each characters tarot card?

I did my best to assign most of them here, and not limit the selection only to the main cast. I couldn't fit in all of the Major Arcana though.

  1. Fool/Judgement - Nino
  2. Magician - Solis
  3. High Priestess - Diana
  4. Emperor - Suvillan
  5. Chariot - Kaji
  6. Wheel of Fortune - Meimona
  7. Justice - Lady Oshen
  8. Strength - Corona
  9. Hermit - Reed
  10. Hanged Man - Ruit
  11. Death - Lune
  12. Temperance - Selene
  13. Devil - Zachery
  14. Star/Tower - Aria
  15. Moon - Kotori
  16. Sun - Five

I think a couple readers have given their takes on this kind of question as well, so I definitely wouldn't be opposed to seeing others' interpretations!
