Korea.. I just wanna talk. I need you to tell me why your language is like this Why do you have so many words that mean ‘and’ or ‘with’ and ‘together’ Why do you have so many words that are usually interchangeable (except when they’re not!) Do you really need this many conjunctions? Is it necessary? Why are you doing this to me.

I mean it’s fine. really it is. I speak English as a native language I don’t have a leg to stand on here, I know that. But still.

Learning in the Time of COVID-19

Going into university, I was so excited for the new opportunities to learn about things that I truly wanted to learn about. I stayed on top of things for the first couple of months, but then I slowly lost the enthusiasm that I wanted to have. Now, I’m really struggling to get anything done.

In the time of online learning, it’s incredibly hard to get and stay motivated, and I really feel as though I’ve lost my passion for education. At this point, I don’t feel as though I’m really learning - just trying to meet due dates. I want nothing more than to be able to go to my university’s library and study, but I’m stuck in my bedroom all day. When I’m with my parents, at home, rather than by myself in the city my university is, I’m constantly being pushed to do work every minute I’m awake. Again, I don’t feel like I’m learning, I feel like I’m making deadlines.

COVID-19 has taken so much joy from people’s lives, and I truly cannot wait for the time when we’re able to do the things we love again; when we’re able to reignite the passion we have for education.

1.9.20 - looking back at a few of my older book collections and journal spreads reminds me of how much we capture ourselves at a moment in time based on the purchases we make or the way we express ourselves. I went through a phase of being obsessed with Latin, and found books on learning Latin. I never actually did learn Latin, but I loved looking through the books and just taking it all in. Looking at my bullet journal spreads, I see how far I’ve come from my early calligraphy and what multimedia I used at the time. I collected paint chips and used them for color palettes for spreads.

to everyone else in school right now:

please use sparknotes. please use khan academy. please listen to school house rock songs and watch the history of the entire world i guess and tim and moby and bill nye. any documentary you watch in class can be found somewhere online with a quick google. get your books from project gutenberg and z-lib. download textbooks off the internet whenever you can find them. use desmos for a free online graphing calculator. if you’re learning something and you don’t get it look up the wikipedia page on it and put it into simple english to get the gist, then put it back into regular english to get the full story. cheat if you have to. school sucks so bad rn and if you’re like me and you get all your materials secondhand or from the lost and found, online resources are really useful rn; all of the above have helped me pass a class in some way, and i hope they can help you too.

stay inside and stay safe. best of luck to all the students out there.

Back to (Online) College

Since my classes begin tomorrow and it is mostly online I thought I'd share some simple study/self care tips that I will be sticking to.

  • Decide where you will work - even if it is at your kitchen table, having a designated work spot is so important for online classes and study. I understand that for some people this can be difficult, so you could break up your day instead of sitting down for a few hours straight.
  • Get enough sleep - Summer is over, it's time to settle back into a semi-normal sleeping pattern. Being tired can be a terribly difficult roadblock for concentration.
  • Get up early - by this I don't mean "get up at 6am every day". I mean don't stay in bed until five minutes before your class starts. Get up maybe an hour or so beforehand, which leads me to my next point-
  • Eat breakfast! - it will help you concentrate on your study. Plus, now you're at home you can snack throughout the day as well!
  • Hydrate! - It is SO important to drink water regularly. Try to keep a tall glass or a bottle nearby when you're working.
  • Wash and Dress - if you don't have the time or energy to shower, you can brush your teeth and wash your face. Trust me, it will makes a world of difference. It also might be tempting to throw a sweater on over your pyjamas for lectures, but you will feel a lot more alert and ready to work if you change out of the clothes you slept in. A change of underwear and even clean joggers and a shirt can freshen you up a lot.
  • Take your breaks! - even a 15 minute break for you to stretch your legs and grab some air will help so much!
  • Stay in touch with your friends and classmates - working alone can feel very daunting, so it might be a good idea to reach out to friends and organise a study session on a group call or video chat. You needn't be lonely just because you're alone.
  • Keep any medication you take close to where you work - I started doing this not long ago. It can be frustrating to have to break the flow of work to get up and take it, so it may be tempting to leave it until later. If you have it within arms reach you can take it without disruption. It also might help to set an alarm if it is time sensitive.

That's it! This is a pretty basic self care list for studying online but sometimes it's best to keep it simple. Good luck my loves and mind yourselves!

“If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else” • This has never felt more accurate after the year we’ve had. I’ve always been an introvert (or an ambivert at most) and have always found peace in hanging out alone, but I also do love going out and spending time with others, which has been missing a lot in 2020. I’ve learned this year more than ever how important it is to be comfortable with ourselves and to be our own best friend, and how prioritizing ourselves is not selfish. I’ve learned to say “no” and “I’m not comfortable with that”, especially in the times we live in. I’ve learned not to depend on others, and that our friends and family should not complete us but instead should complement us; that we should be whole beings, and a solid foundation on which we can build stronger relationships. That’s a state of mind I hope to bring into 2021, no matter who I’ll be able to see in person or which new people I’ll meet along the way. 💁🏻
