My son once came back from a record shop visit with his uncle and with wide eyes and excited smile presented me with a cassette tape. “Look what I found!” As though he’d unearthed ancient pottery at a dig sight.

I love it. I love when my kids discover something that I take for granted. I hear songs with new ears because they are in a state of wonder. My son played me “Paint it Black” the other day, I’m like yeah Rolling Stones so what? And then I see his face and that LOOK like he just discovered sunsets and he’s like yeah but listen to this part, listen to the guitar right here - and I hear a song anew. Like watching a puppy see a bird for the first time, and oh oh right yeah birds are fucking amazing, forgot about that.

#finally a comment that doesn’t have disdain for kids discovering old things #isn’t it cool that someone didn’t know Queen and they got to hear it for the first time? #isn’t it cool to witness that excitement?

I think this is largely why “react” channels on YouTube have become so popular. Watching someone experience something you love for the first time is exciting. Rediscovering that thing through their eyes is also exciting.

Nanowrimo

So I'm trying to do Nanowrimo this year. For a variety of reasons this may be the year I can actually do it.

I've been very ill and am still recovering, but being home from work and advised to do things like writing which has always brought me happiness, this could be the year.

I'm also working with a writer's group so that's also motivation to write.

Could I actually finish this novel that's been in my brain aching to come out for over a decade?

So far I'm just a bit over the daily goal - a couple hundred words more than I need by now to make it. I've always been behind by now because of work. This might be it!

Still Here

Alive if not entirely well. Currently on disability but not done having to be put over the barrel by the insurance company, just on a reprieve for a few months.

Trying to write some original stuff but also thinking about fanfics I've left half done.

Still here in the world. Slowly on the mend.

Eggs; boiled

Steak: Med. rare/rare

Warm drink: Hot spiced cider ( the American, non- alcoholic kind)

Tagging anyone who wants to play. Y'all know I’m terrible at tagging.

Fun! (though admittedly I can say I feel enlightened about anyone after reading those answers lol)

Eggs: All kinds but especially Eggs Benedict

Steak: medium rare T-Bone

Milk: organic whole milk either plain or with chocolate mixed in

Alcohol: I raarely drink but sometimes I’ll have a very tiny amount of Irish cream or rum chata

Warm Drink: black tea (Tetley) with honey and heavy cream

Hmm.

Eggs: Any BUT scrambled

Steak: Medium, but as long as it’s not cold in the middle, I won’t care

Milk: Whole, thanks to my aunt who’s husband is a diabetic and found out that the lower percentages are just sugar water.

Alcohol: I don’t drink with rare, rare exception, and if you ever tried the things I will drink, you would probably still not count them: Kopperberg (sp?) cider or mead.

Warm drink: Coffee. Tea. Black tea. White tea. Rooibos. Rose. Mexican hot chocolate. Green tea. Alllll the warm things.

Not up for much lately, but I’ll give this a try:

Eggs: Mostly hard fried or omelette. Occasionally over-easy, but hate scrambled unless they’re cooked to rubbery and don’t like anything gooey on them (not counting cheese)

Steak: Medium - medium well. I don’t want it overdone, but not raw in the middle either.

Alcohol: I don’t drink a lot, but when I do it’s wine (red or white) or cinnamon whiskey and I don’t care how “basic” that is. I likes what I likes.

Warm drink: Peppermint or licorice-spice tea

My brain might be ready to start writing again. I actually looked a couple of things up for research for a story that’s been in my head for a couple of weeks. Well, it’s more a scene in a story, but it’s a start.

It’s Prodigal Son related though which is bad for my languishing Magnum fics. I just was not mentally able to do anything creative for a while.

Narrator: She was not, in fact, ready to focus well enough to be writing again and is now on medical leave from work.

When the doc said I had to take time off (thankfully I have benefits to cover being off), I was really upset, but then thought maybe I can use the time to try to write and be creative again. Hoping to get there.

Every day I’m just focusing on still being here tomorrow: listening to the doctor, taking the meds, and *being*. That’s enough for now.

Experiencing burnout in an area you love doesn’t mean you are no longer passionate about that thing, or are any less good at it. It’s often an indication that there are other parts of your life that need your care. A garden looks most beautiful when every flower is watered, and you deserve to nourish yourself in the same way. You will flourish again.

This was timely.

Would anyone be kind enough to transcribe this or link to a text version?

Everything Is AWFUL and I’m Not Okay: Questions to Ask Before Giving Up on Yourself

Are you hydrated?

If not, have a glass of water. Dehydration can mimic or increase feelings associated with anxiety and a well hydrated brain functions optimally. Avoid excess caffeine.

Have you eaten in the past three hours?

Don’t be a victim of hanger! Get some food–something with protein, not just simple carbs or high-fat. Nuts, hummus, and veggies are great options to feed your studying brain. Keep healthy snacks within reach to avoid mindlessly chowing down on sweets.

Have you stretched your legs in the past day?

If not, do so right now. If you don’t have the energy or time for a run or a trip to the gym, just walk around the block or building. Even minimal exercise preps the mind for learning so that you can focus better and recall things easier, plus it’s good to get a change of scenery.

Have you said something nice to someone in the past day?

Do so, whether online or in person. Make it genuine! We bet your study partner would appreciate a compliment.

Have you moved your body to music in the past day?

If not, jog for the length of a song at your favorite tempo, or just dance around your bedroom for the length of an upbeat song (singing along is a bonus)

Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days?

If not, do so. Don’t be afraid to ask for hugs from friends of friends’ pets. Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; you’re not imposing.

Have you started or changed any medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand?

That may be screwing with your head. Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesn’t settle down.

If daytime: are you dressed?

If no, put on clean clothes that aren’t PJs. Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether it’s a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.

If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep?

Put on PJs, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes while focusing on breathing deeper with every breath- no electronic screens allowed! Adequate sleep is a necessity for stress management.

Do you feel ineffective?

Pause right now and get something small completed, whether it’s responding to an email, loading the dishwasher, or tidying up your room. Good job!

Do you feel unattractive?

Take a darn selfie. Your friends will remind you how great you look. You are always insta-worthy.

Do you feel paralyzed by indecision?

Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.

Have you over-exerted yourself lately–physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually?

That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether it’s physical rest, taking some time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment for a little. Time spent refreshing yourself is never time “wasted!”

Have you waited a week?

Sometimes or perception of life is skewed, and we can’t even tell that we’re not thinking clearly, and there’s no obvious external cause. It happens. Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.

You’ve made it this far; and you will make it through. You are stronger than you think.

Because someone might need this today

You have survived 100% of your worst days.

This too shall pass.
