Riding the train that entered into the booming and grand city of Shanghai, I’ve only heard about it from friend’s stories and the local newspaper. The city lights illuminate the cobbled dirt road leading towards my lifelong dream. I left my village to go into the big intimidating city full of aspirations and curiosity in search of becoming a singer. I know it’s a big dream and very unlikely to make it quickly, but it’s something I’m willing to give my everything to make it come true. My family is far from supportive and were trying to force me into some insane arranged marriage with the village Mayor’s son. Some would say I ran away from my filial responsibilities but for me, and probably many other young women, would say I’m simply running after my own happiness and dreams.
I got up from the train car seat and reached for the overhead to bring my luggage down. The train attendant had helped me put it up there, so now I was having some difficulties getting it down on my own. Pushing myself up on my tippy toes I can feel the edge of my suitcase as my fingertips barely brush against it. The train hits a bump and I start to fall backwards, I squeeze my eyes shut about to let out a scream, instead letting out a shrill yelp as a strong bodied gentleman catches me with one arm while his other arm is pushing the suitcase back from falling on top of us. I freeze as I fall into his arms, gazing up at a dimpled handsome man. First thing I notice are his warm and kind eyes, and his smile widens at the look of shock that’s fallen upon my face as I cover my mouth embarrassed at what just happened. He lifts me back up so I’m finally steady on my feet and I thank him for his aid.
“Did you need help getting this?” He gestures at the large suitcase up top and I just nod feeling my face get hot from embarrassment. The kind gentleman chuckles and brings down the suitcase for me as the train slows to a halt as we’ve finally arrived at our destination.
“Thank you, kind sir…Mr….?” I ask curiously, as the dimpled man smiles sweetly at me.
“It’s not a problem. I’m Kun, you must be new to the city.” He says with a chuckle. What gave away that I’m a country bumpkin, I wonder? Likely my entire being and look from head to toe!
“Well thank you Kun, I’m Y/N.” I give a gentle nod and bow to him for helping me.
Kun just gives me a polite nod back, “Well have a lovely day.” As he heads towards one of the train exits, I quickly gather my belongings and follow suit with the rest of the crowd.
