✨✨✨Mental Health ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
It’s been on my heart and mind to discuss about mental health within the black community 💕
By the way I emphasize black men primarily in this post and that’s just because within the black community especially with men, mental health is not really spoken about that much but this post is applicable to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

For me personally, growing up in an African home, I wasn’t or I should say I never felt so free and open to have conversations with my parents regarding my feelings emotions thoughts because in an African community, talking about your feelings and thoughts and what you might be going through emotionally or mentally is not necessarily something a parent and child might openly engage in. This might not be the same for other African households, but this is what I experienced when growing up. Also my parents are religious and they usually would say if I have any problems that I may be going through, I should pray to God about it.
That was great and but it closes that door for that relationship with me and my parents because basically, they’re telling me that I can’t come to them and again it closes the door to having that open a conversation with them and I this happens a lot in a lot of black homes.
When it comes to men, typically with most cultures men are not suppose to show any emotions; and within the black community, mental health is already stigmatized. With African culture, people they don’t believe in mental health. They typically believe if an individual is acting “different” or is labeled “crazy”, they require to seek religious help. This completely closes the door on the possibly of mental health initiatives. Mental health issues are not recognized as a serious and import aspect of daily life. This needs to change respectfully and it starts with awareness. ❤️
Social justice among the Black community will remain incomplete until mental health disparities among the black community is addressed. Mental health is an essential part of overall physical health and satisfaction. The Black community suffers from an increased rate of mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression. The increased incidence of psychological difficulties in the Black community is related to the lack of access to appropriate and culturally responsive mental health care, prejudice and racism inherent in the daily environment of Black individuals, and historical trauma enacted on the Black community by the medical field.
📌📌📌What needs to happen📌📌📌
It all starts on the individual level; talk to your friends, family and other about mental health, be open to having the discussion and show others that you are open to discuss it. This is the first step to combat stigma around mental health within the black community. It’s very important that we as a community bring up these topics among ourselves. You never know who living with mental health struggles. Talking about mental health in general open up the door for an individual to feel a bit more comfortable to share their struggles.
Talking about it is a step towards a better future when it comes to combating the stigma around mental health within our community.
