Character.

    in greek mythology, poseida¹ (call her po) is the goddess of the sea and the youngest daughter of kronos (reigning champion of the world’s nastiest stomach award and former ruler of the cosmos) and rhea (mother of the gods and crazy cat lady). she’s the reason why horses exist and, consequently, why horse girls are a thing. she’s also the reason why h.p. lovecraft had reoccurring nightmares until the end of his miserable, fearful existence…but let’s not talk about that. 🖤

¹poseida was born as poseidon but she transitioned into a woman a couple of years after the titanomachy (or titan war) began; her transition was achieved via voluntary shapeshifting rather than through modern methods such as surgery or hormone therapy.

     why, hello there!

     for those that may not know me, my name is sunny and this is my own little corner of this hell site. I’m a 26 year old university student who’s currently taking online classes for a psychology masters program so, expect my activity on here to be sparse. my pronouns are she/her and they/them and I identify as a demigirl. I’m also latina (cuban-american) and my hobbies include: reading, writing, and baking. (trying to also get back into painting!)

Reminder to be kind to ocs.

Be kind to oc writers.

Be they young, old, new to rping and writing, or if they’ve been here for longer than you have… they have decided to create someone new and wonderful and share it with you for free.

So please: engage with them. Talk about their ocs. Try to learn about their story and their world. You may find you like them a lot more than you’d planned, and the writer will thank you endlessly for the interest. All your canon characters are their creators’ ocs, after all. Just because they have been published and shared with the world on a broader scale does not make them more valid.

So please, remember: when someone gives you an oc, that is a piece of themself. It is a piece of their heart and a representation of all the work, time, and effort it took to get them to that point.

They’re trusting you with it. Be gentle and show them respect.

never be embarrassed for being proud of your OC.  never listen to the voices telling you they’re too powerful or too weak,  too angry or too happy,  too hard or too vulnerable,  too strong or not strong enough.  if they are exactly how you intended to create them,  or if they’ve grown beyond what you imagined in a way that makes you happy,  then that’s all that matters.  every published and produced ‘canon’ character is someone’s OC.  you don’t bat an eye at these characters being proclaimed to be powerful.  you don’t bat an eye at them being praised within the text or loved by the writers and fans.  your OC is no different.  there is not any real,  important difference between what you’ve created and what you see on the pages of a book or on a screen.  it’s all of equal value.  it’s all just people telling stories and enjoyment is the only real value.

some advice I got a long time ago about making your characters more realistic:

If you can’t imagine your character in silly or embarrassing situations without feeling very personally offended; take a step back, kick your character off their pedestal and let them breathe.

Let them feel and react in the same way you and others do. Let them laugh at dumb things, let them trip and fall on their face a few times. Let them experience life.

Don’t take your characters so seriously that all the fun qualities are removed in the process.

the roleplaying community cannot be a community without communication. i know it can be intimidating to talk to potential partners, but 9 times out of 10, it won't be bad. just take initiative, be creative, and be a community.
