Not gonna lie, the old anime was funny as hell, but at the same time, I think how much they went out of their way to paint Ash is incompetent was a bad idea in the long run.

Really stifled potential growth he could’ve had earlier in the series, and painted a very potent picture in people’s minds, to boot. Like all of the times people who have dropped out of pokemon only remember Ash as a fool who doesn’t know type advantages/gets pity badges.

After watching I Choose You, for all of its weirdness, I really envied their early portrayal of Ash, as someone who still had a lot to learn, but consistently improved, and wasn’t dragged down at every turn.
