Indecent Proposal - Chapter 26
“Please…,” I whispered as my eyes closed, unable to bear the look of that man’s face anymore, “let go of me,” I tried to calm myself, hoping he wouldn’t do anything to physically harm me.
Suddenly, his grip became loose, and I couldn’t feel him grabbing me any longer. I opened my eyes, looking to the ground I just turned and ran out of the bedroom straight into the streets. I didn’t even know where I was going or what I was gonna do, I just had to walk. When people say that their entire life unfolds before their very eyes, this is what I had experienced after that horrifying discovery. My childhood, my first job, then becoming Jared’s assistant, and Jamie getting ill, then me signing a devil’s contract, and thinking I’ve ended up in a fairytale when all I did was live a terrifying horror story.
In the middle of my baffling stream of consciousness, I felt somebody touching my shoulder. In one swift move, I turned ready to hit the person, when I saw Shannon.
“Hey, hey, it’s me, don’t kill me or anything”, he said with a smirk trying to make me smile.
“You’re not on my list today,” I said sternly, “What do you want, Shannon? “
“I just want to talk. And maybe make you come back home.”
“That’s not my home, Shannon,” I answered and continue walking, as Shannon started following me, “It never was, and after this, it certainly isn’t going to be,” I answered with blood boiling in my veins.
“Listen, Melody, I know what Jared has done can never be completely forgotten, but,…”
“Forgotten?!” I sniped at him. “Not only will I never forget it, but I will certainly never even forgive him! I thought I was going to die, Shannon. That day, when that man molested me, I actually thought I would die out of fear. How can you forget something like that?”
“I know it must be horrible for you, but Jared isn’t the one to blame. He did everything in his power to stop the bastard. That man just wouldn’t stop. He’s a bully, that’s what he does. And once he made a deal with Jared, which was by the way only meant to startle you. It never should have involved you being robbed, hurt or anything like that”
“He wouldn’t have made the deal in the first place if his intentions were good,” I said still shaking and feeling the tears rolling down my cheeks.
“I know. I don’t say I completely justify his actions, but you know how Jared can be impulsive sometimes. He doesn’t always think rationally, and to be fair, he was not in love with you when he made that deal,” Shannon still tried to soften me. “Once he found out about his true feelings, he did everything in his power to stop the bully from ever coming near you, but the guy just wouldn’t budge. He enjoys inflicting pain, and the minute he saw Jared squirm, he was even more eager to turn a simple tomfoolery into something much worse.”
“See, that doesn’t make me feel any better. Especially the part where he knew everything all along and we still ended up at the scene of the crime. Look, Shannon, I know you love your brother and that you’ll do everything in your power to bring us back together because that would mean the world to Jared, but you shouldn’t hold your breath,” I was trying to be as concise and precise as possible, with no mixed messages.
“What are you saying?” Shannon stood there fearing to hear the worst possible answer coming out of my mouth.
“We’re over. Jared and I are history. He can forget about ever being married to me, just as I’ll forget about him,” I finished, wiping the last tear that was rolling down my cheek.
“No, Melody. You can’t. He’ll die,” Shannon almost begged me to go back.
“Well, at least he’ll know how I feel right now,” I said turning the other way and going into an unknown direction. I just needed to blow off steam and at least try to take my mind off Jared for at least some time.
