I keep seeing fic with words censored in the body of the fic like so: c*nt, f*gg*t, q-slur (seriously, come on), r*pe, *nc*st. I even saw a fic where someone was described as “sitting next to his unalived body” which was so absurd it made me laugh.

I’ve seen this trend in tags as well, which would be ACTIVELY FUCKING DANGEROUS if AO3 tag wranglers weren’t literal, actual angels who make sure that “rape” and “r*pe” (and all such transpositions) are treated like the same tag.

AO3 isn’t TikTok. Tag accurately and completely for your fic themes so people can search AND filter. Use the correct words in your fic content so people who use blacklist extensions can actually benefit from the tools that protect them.

If you don’t feel comfortable using a word without censoring it, then don’t use that word at all. Maybe consider why you’re even writing something that contains that theme.

Sincerely,

An actual real life rape and incest survivor who has actual fucking PTSD and really doesn’t want to have to stop reading fic for my ship because people think a god damn asterisk is going to somehow save people like me from being triggered.

I feel like maybe people newer to fandom don’t realize that putting asterisks in words like that is not to avoid triggering someone. Alternate words and alternate spellings are for tricking the algorithm from censoring/blocking your content from distribution (like on tiktok, not showing your video to anyone if you use the word “dead”, so you use the word “unalive”).

Tumblr and AO3 both don’t have that issue - your posts will still be seen if you use the full version of those words. And, as OP stated above, people rely on you using those words so that their blacklisted words/phrases work and they can actually avoid the things that trigger them.

The internet is vast and ever-changing and rules vary from site to site - this is good information for newer AO3/tumblr users!

adulthood is carefully writing a two paragraph email that could actually just be reduced completely to “hey, what the fuck”

As a young librarian, I started trying to figure out why more young people aren't ever coming in; 90% of our demographic are the elderly and parents of children, and the rest are a rough mix of the kids and teenagers who come in just for school projects. As a result, I've been attempting different ways to get the Youth TM to come into libraries, but first I wanted to see why they don't come in. Please reblog to get this poll out to more people! <3

anyway since we’re all baking bread and dealing with a plague, here’s a quiz on who you would be in the middle ages

Sorry, everyone.

disaffected noble just here for a good time

when the plague hit paris, you fled to your distant estate to sit it out. your father thinks this is a great time for you to finally start learning how to manage the estate, but you’d rather host parties and entertain your equally bored noble friends. you try to impress upon him the importance of supporting minstrels and artists, but he just keeps blathering on about land taxes and duties. when he dies and you inherit his lands, you’ll most certainly bankrupt them, but until then, you just wanna get lit on wine and jam to the latest fourteenth century bops.

*opens mouth* … *closes mouth*

serf who dies from the plague by twenty-five
you lived a good, god-fearing life. you have left your grieving husband with four children to raise (all sons, god is good) and a small farm to tend to. sure, your final days were full of pain and the townsfolk almost burned your house down around you to keep the disease from spreading, but you know the good lord will reward you in heaven. hey, you made it to adulthood, that’s pretty exciting.

god damn it

monk reknown for his homoerotic poetry

you joined the monastery out of a true love for god. marriage never interested you, and the spiritual life called to you. now though, you’re starting to make some waves with your almost scandalous poems about an unnamed man. you swear the poems are merely about your love for christ, but the abbot is suspicious. you and brother wybert might want to keep your distance for a few weeks.

Hehehe

Happy Pride Month Eleanor Roosevelt was queer, the Little Mermaid is a gay love story, James Dean liked men, Emily Dickinson was a lesbian, Nikola Tesla was asexual, Freddie Mercury was bisexual & British Indian, and black trans women pioneered the gay rights movement.

Florence Nightingale was a lesbian, Leonardo da Vinci was gay, Michelangelo too, Jane Austen liked women, Hatshepsut was not cisgender, and Alexander the Great was a power bottom

Honestly just reblogging for that last one

Probably not historically backed but fuck yes

Freddie Mercury is well known for his attraction to men but was also linked to several women, including Barbara Valentin whom he lived with shortly before he died. Friends have talked about being invited into their bed and walking in on them having sex (documentary Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender)

Jane Austin never married and wrote about sharing a bed with women (Jane Austen At Home: A Biography by Lucy Worsley)

I want to hire you to follow me around and defend my honor with meticulous research

You’ve never experienced sarcasm and rebellion against the System like Hawkeye and Trapper and BJ’s sarcasm and rebellion against the System.

Do yourselves a favour and go watch this show

Seriously M*A*S*H is… okay you know pretty much every Mood Whiplash Ironic Combination of Horrible Despair Drama and Absolute Hilarity (often at the same time) that hits so hard and well, like… This show was good and formative and our faves have *so much* to thank it for.

I watched it as a kid and didn’t really get it and I have owned the DVD box since it became available and no matter how much I love modern shows, this will always be my #1 favorite of all time. Nothing, and I mean nothing else, gets even close.

JB - A Far Bell Ringing

a.k.a. the WIP that wouldn’t die after I look up one painting I stg, I don’t even like art appreciation my brain has strange obsessions

Welcome to the fic that expresses my displeasure with modern espionage and everyone’s inability to integrate with technology + there needs to be more diversity in the Bond ‘verse (INCLUDING disabilities because somehow everyone skims over the gritty details). Also let’s give a warm welcome to my new favorite pasttime: invasion of the asexuals. Blame the blokes compiling the series all ur favs are ace, but especially @moonstalker24‘s Domestic Bliss and Other Nonsense and @wordsformurder‘s Naughty Hookers (Swathed in Wool) for being the first 100% relatable ace!fics I ever found.

Anyway this fic is looking to be a crockpot of all the WIPs and headcanons and fix-its I’ve compiled over the last few years. This bit is the WIP that wouldn’t let me sleep until I decided to extend it into a real story.

And she's fading down the river, But in England's song for ever She's the Fighting Téméraire Sir Henry Newbolt, The Fighting Téméraire

J.M.W Turner and James Bond were at odds in many significant ways: Turner lived in the 1800s, Bond for the duration of the modern era. Turner was an artist and a romantic; Bond considered himself a soldier and bachelor. Turner used artistic license, Bond a killing license.

Little things between them, in the larger scheme.

Their views on modern practicality was their greatest polarization.

The Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up, better known as The Fighting Téméraire, spoke to Turner’s view of the dawning Industrial Age – dirty, overwhelming and insignificant in the face of the previous century’s accomplishments. The setting sun and rising moon, as if the Industrial Age would pass in the wake of something brighter.

Bond had often felt like a relic set to be scrapped for parts, but in no way did he forsake the gains of new technology for outdated methodology. Hearing aids, hidden microphones, handheld computers, none of them were from his century, and better them for that. To be a spy was to use the tools of the enemy and the taboos of allies. Technology was no one’s friend and everyone’s hesitant colleague, reliable if only in learned hands. Maybe Turner had dismayed of the new because he’d never experienced the relic, only seen it in the light of victorious battle. Maybe he hadn’t been capable of keeping up.

Q compared him to the Téméraire, maybe for his age, maybe for his attitude, but his schooling was in the classical humanities, not art appreciation.

M—his M, Olivia Mansfield—had stood him in front of a travelling gallery of Frans Hals’ paintings just two corridors down and two decades earlier. Patrons’ interest was heavier on the featured portrait, the Laughing Cavalier, but M sat him down on a bench in front of Young Man with a Skull. “A vanitas,” he’d said blandly. “I hardly need a reminder of my job description.”

She’d side-eyed him then returned her cold stare to the painting, running a curious gaze down the long plume of the boy’s hat, over his unkempt hair and ultimately to the skull in his left hand. “Hals did another one like this, but the skull was painted out.” If the boy had been flesh and blood, Bond would have assumed her dislike was for his disarray or choice in bedmates. To his eye it was a clean job, a standard order vanitas for Hals and Dutch Golden Age art in general. But M had crossed her arms and settled back on her low-cut heels. “They’ll always try to paint the skulls out,” she told him.

Really, Q’s comparison was kinder in that light. Bloody big ships were his preferred ilk.

So about that hiatus

Whoopsie. Honestly this last year has been insane. If you thought switching majors was a hassle, switching genders is even more so. THE PAPERWORK WTF?!?!?!? But I’ve come out to my parents, I’m getting the freaking paperwork confirming my sanity, and then I can FINALLY start T. And our insurance covers trans treatments and surgeries, thank the glow cloud (A L L H A I L)! Even better was finding a bro that’s just started T to bemoan all this shit with.

So yep, that’s my alibi. I’ve been writing in the meanwhile, but mostly WIPs that I need to whip into shape (hehe pun intended). Some will get posted. Eventually...

Finally I’d like to thank all my fellow fanfic writers out there. Y’all are the only reason this accounting class hasn’t bored me to death. You can expect to see me going back through all your fics for the fifteenth time during my evil, evil required stats class next semester.

John Cho: You know, I had requested that my husband be Asian. A.V. Club: Why was that? John Cho: The reason was that I grew up with some gay Asian male friends. You don’t really see Asian men together very often. It’s very rare in life. I’ve always felt that there was some extra cultural shame to having two Asian men together, because it was so difficult to come out of the closet, so difficult to be gay and Asian, that they couldn’t really bring themselves… It’s easier to run away from people that look like your family. I wanted the future to be where it was completely normal and therefore, aside from the gender, they look like a traditional heterosexual couple. So that relationship, to me, the optics of it are that it looks very traditional on the one hand and very radical on the other.
