YOOOOOOO, they’re formalizing this?!?!

I used to do community service at a community breakfast, we’d go to the local Safeway and get all their stale bread, the local bakery for their stale baked goods and whatnot.

They throw away so much food it’s ridiculous, I’m glad someone finally created a program like this!

The American app isn’t available everywhere but if you’re broke in NY or Boston, check it out!

The US app logo currently looks like this and was last updated 3 weeks ago (as of January 25th 2020)

TooGoodToGo is available in many European countries, including the UK, much of Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy and the Iberian peninsula.

In Canada we have flash food, I dont know if it’s just confined to loblaw stores but you can get food that stores have to throw out for dirt cheap

I know I reblogged this once already but I’m back to say there’s an Australian version!

YWaste has been around since 2017 apparently, so they’re quite well established if you’re Australian and in need of options

I used to be broke and knowing about this app would have been extremely helpful. Hope it helps some of you folks out there ❤️

I use flashfood and it’s literally what enabled me to pay off my student debt and start saving

Can everyone who reads this PLEASE reblog it?!?!?  Libraries literally saved my life as a child!

Being abused at home, bullied at school and lost in the world, the library and all the books I could escape to the most amazing worlds, kept me alive!

I would walk to the library, and spend all day, from 10 am to 9 pm reading there!! I got special awards for how many books I read, I wrote little blurbs on why i loved the books (probably why I love to BETA and do ARCs)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Just hit the green arrows and the reblog!!!

As a 50 year old woman, the library offers me so much. Digital art pads to borrow, 3D printing, book clubs that are face to face (yeah, the introvert likes face to face because a moderator will stomp on anyone getting snarky)

New books in LARGE PRINT! I’m visually challenged and as much as I love my kindle, The feel of a real book in my hands will always be a beloved feeling!

Our library also has quarterly books sales of almost free books!! For 5$USD we get in a day early and can buy as many as we want. Anyone else has to wait and there is a limit for the first 2 days.

Also many, many libraries have inter library loan(it may be called something different). This means if they don’t have the item you want, they can get it for you. This may include photocopy/pdf of articles. This can also include along with books and DVDs, microfilm/fiche which is also a huge resource. Check around for libraries that are listed as depositories if you want to look at government documents.

Remember that many colleges and universities have open stacks for the public. You will likely have to pay a membership fee but you will get to stuff.

His name is Eugene Goodman. In a now-viral video, he is seen confronting White Supremacists and using himself as bait to provide cover for the evacuation of lawmakers. He was alone in a hallway when the mob reached him, and Congress was being evacuated to the left. He lured the mob away from lawmakers, drawing them in the opposite direction and up the stairs.

Officer Goodman deserves recognition for his amazing bravery and selflessness. Because of him, Congress was evacuated safely and no lawmakers were assassinated on that terrible day. He risked everything to save others, and he is a hero.

Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen

“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard

Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.

Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.

being born in the late 90′s is a really weird time because our coming of age is/was so tied into the expansion of personal technology? like for so many of us the transition from getting your first flip phone to smartphones wasn’t just a technology shift, it was part of growing up. and it created this really weird timeline where new technologies were being created right as we entered the right age market to use them, so now we all know intuitively how to use snapchat or the social context of emoji use or whatever but we can also remember childhoods spent (almost) entirely outside and offline. like you get all the disillusionment of the older millennial generation except now with the stress of spending your adolescence measuring yourself against others on social media and it’s really fucking confusing

you put it into words

Th*nksgiving is coming and so many of us are revisiting deeply seated traumas glossed over with family dinners so.

White ppl commit to reframing this holiday from a celebration of an ongoing atrocity to a society-wide acknowledgement of said atrocity & movement to support natives, dedicate this day to educating yourself & others on native issues, and natives drop your money links ☺️💞

Hey, remember back in 2016 when there was a lot of cynicism on social media about how both the Democrats and the Republicans were hopelessly corrupt?

Remember how a lot of that turned out to come from Russian psy-ops designed to discourage left-leaning people from voting?

Because I do.

Self-reblogging because I’m seeing both a lot of cynicism about Democrats and a bit of “Biden’s got this sewn up, no need to bother voting” on my socials lately.

Anyone who tells you you shouldn’t vote does not have your best interests at heart.

you do know that when jewish and romani people say “never forget” we mean “learn about the holocaust so you can recognize the warning signs of facism and genocide” not “repeatedly bring up the holocaust whenever anything bad happens and exploit our pain and trauma to make people care about your cause” and when we say “never again” we mean “take action to prevent any stage of genocide on any scale by any means, hold collaborators responsible and don’t be complicit” not “only care about genocide when it’s too late”, right? or did you think it was just a fun catchphrase?

no actually reblog this

Um Indiana?

What the FUCK is going on?

Avatar

Listen I don't have a very big reach and I am in Texas so I can't vote against this bill PLEASE signal boost this so people in Indiana can fight back against this!

The bill is stating ANYONE convicted of a protest-related charge (even if it is not related to actual lawbreaking like vandalism, looting or violence) will not only NOT get federal financial aid such as unemployment benefits but also will have to pay restitution to the law agency that arrested them on top of standard conviction/court fees

Indiana please vote, call, and write your local representatives to stop this from going through because the next step is a law agency attacking a peaceful protest for no reason other than anyone who defends themselves will have to pay them money

I cannot stress this enough help me boost this

Oh dear lord, guys... JIM BANKS IS A UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE. AS IN. HE IS IN THE HOUSE AND THIS BILL WILL AFFECT EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY IF IT PASSES.

If you were wondered if this is legit after all (because mostly it’s only FOX talking about it because OF COURSE they are), here it is on Congress’s website.

Hopefully it won’t gain much ground because of the Democrat majority in the House right now, and here’s a good time to remind all my fellow voting-age Americans to VOTE THIS ELECTION AND VOTE DOWN THE BALLOT. Your Senator, your U.S. Rep., your state rep., your state senator... You don’t want shit like this? THEN VOTE.

And also maybe get in touch with your current rep in the House to tell them that this is a shitty idea and you will not stand for it.

I am re-reblogging this because it is frankly terrifying how many people in the notes are being like, “I’m glad I don’t live in Indiana,” and, once again, THIS IS A FEDERAL BILL. If it passes, IT WILL AFFECT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.

Good lord, no wonder we’re in such a mess when y’all can’t even distinguish a state rep from a U.S. Rep!!! I’m not saying that as an insult, I’m saying that as being GENUINELY CONCERNED.

She/her also personally fought against transwomen in prison seeking gender affirmation surgery...

Here’s an article that gives more details on the story, and what Harris said about it.  The key points:

  • It was the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation that refused the surgery to the inmates.  When the inmates fought the policy in court, as Attorney General of California, it was Harris’s job to represent the Department.  Yes, she did it, but it wasn’t something she decided on her own to do.  (Also, not for nothing, the inmates won the case.)
  • Her characterization of the episode:   “On that issue I will tell you I vehemently disagree and in fact worked behind the scenes to ensure that the Department of Corrections would allow transitioning inmates to receive the medical attention that they required, they needed and deserved,” Harris said.
  • A policy now exists for inmates to receive transition-related care in California prisons (although apparently the DoC isn’t doing a great job of holding up its end of the bargain*--quelle surprise).

(*For the record, Harris finished her time as AG and became a Senator shortly after this agreement was reached, so it’s someone else’s job now to enforce it.)

The thing to keep in mind here is that, as Attorney General, Kamala Harris couldn’t wave her hand and have everything in the entire California Department of Justice go exactly as she wanted it--and she won’t be able to as Vice President, either.  We currently have a president who thinks that’s how it works, and we’re damned lucky he’s wrong.

She had (and will have to) work with large number of people who hold different views.  (Another article I read said that the California Department of Justice, which she ran as AG, employs about 4,800 people--that’s a lot of different views.)  If she had refused to back the Department of Corrections in their case, she would have alienated people whose cooperation she needed to be able to rely on.  (If she even had the option of not backing them and staying AG--I’m not sure how it works, exactly.)  Even people who agreed with her about the specific matter might have disapproved of her hanging her subordinates out to dry.  (Another thing our current president does constantly--notice how Harris isn’t saying that the person in her office who actually wrote these briefs is a bad guy that she barely knew.)

So here’s what actually happened when Kamala Harris “fought against transwomen in prison seeking gender affirmation surgery”:

  • The Department of Corrections had a policy denying gender-affirmation surgery to inmates.
  • Two inmates fought that policy in court.
  • Harris defended that policy in court (or, more accurately, was the supervisor of the person who did so--but the legal documents went out under her signature, and she takes responsibility for their content).
  • Harris also worked to change the policy.

If you’ve had a job, you’ve probably been in the position of having to carry out a policy that you don’t agree with.  Your choices are to quit your job in protest or stay and argue that the policy should change.  If you pick option B, you still have to follow the policy while you’re working to change it--again, just about the only person in the world who doesn’t know this is Donald J. Trump, because he’s never had a real job where he answered to anybody.

What this incident shows is that Kamala Harris is accustomed to working in a system where she doesn’t always get her own way, and that she knows how to lose the battle to win the war.  As VP, she’s going to need those skills--especially if the Republicans keep the Senate, but even if the Democrats sweep everything in November, we’re notoriously bad at all pulling in the same direction.  We’ve had about enough of the “I’m taking my ball and going home” style of leadership.

This.

I get it, I really do - but Trump has literally stripped away rights from trans kids and fucked the careers of trans people in the military. Pence believes in conversion therapy.

We can remember and discuss these issues, but at the end of the day, Trump/Pence is the greater evil and we need to vote in a unified way to get them out of office because the second term would be so much worse. Don’t vote independent, just suck it up and recognize that we’re not gonna get a perfect candidate ever.

Voting Trump is a face full of glass shards, and a vote for an independent is a vote for Trump. This isn’t complicated.

I had not seen this explanation, and I’m reblogging it because I probably have followers who haven’t either.
