I am always sad that cass doesnt have any chinese role models to look up to. her last name will always be white—whether it be of the father who only loved her as a weapon or of her new family, still primarily a very old-money, very white house
there is no way for her to truly reconnect or even reclaim her mother’s chinese name because it was rejected even by the woman in question; it represented a life that had died alongside her sister, cass’ aunt that she’ll never get to know (or even at the very least know of).
it does speak to a version of reality children of the diaspora has seen again and again—asian children with white names, with white foster families, “saved” from their asian relatives. it’s not exactly played like this in canon but the situation we are left with is the same: the wise white father (bruce) and the volatile and dangerous chinese dragon-lady mother. and we can talk about how david cain is more humanized by the narrative than wu san is but that’s a whole other can of worms. but I do grapple with it, because of the implication that white paternalism is always the solution, that we can’t take care of our own.
the bottom line is, I wish cass had a chinese name. I wish cass had chinese ppl she could look to and connect with

i think that portraying tim drake as east asian can be harmful because of the stereotyping and fulfillment of the model minority myth.
i would advise against it if you're not east asian, and advise east asians to do so carefully if at all.
