Heads up, I’m a horror fan and sometimes reblog horror content. I teach kids about animals. If you have questions about zoos, education, and/or the arts and that as a career, message me!

I need to know if these cats are being sold into the the pet trade or not

In short, yes.

The longer answer is that these are in Eduardo Serio’s Black Jaguar White Tiger zoo. This is essentially a non-accredited private zoo, not a rescue and sanctuary as some people have said. He buys baby cats from circuses and breeders and then makes celebrities pay for photos with them. Several animals have gone missing from his zoo as adults.

Most real zoos do not allow the keepers to play with animals like this, especially different species (which communicate differently and have different social skills, so they might fight if put together). They try to keep the animals as wild as possible by keeping them in their enclosures which at good zoos, have naturalistic trees, grass, and places to hide. Most importantly, they don’t let celebrities come and cuddle cubs bought and taken from their mothers at young ages!

Nope! These little kitties are from black jaguar white tiger foundation, a big cat rescue and sanctuary, and the man in the video is Eduardo Serio. He regularly gets orphaned cubs and cubs rescued from the pet trade, when the zoos don’t have enough room. He doesn’t normally socialize with them like this but the margay and jaguar cubs here had already imprinted on humans and can no longer survive in the wild, so he’s been raising them

Black Jaguar White Tiger is NOT a rescue and sanctuary. It’s a private zoo. Eduardo Serio buys cubs from private breeders and circuses, claims he “rescued” them, and allows celebrities to pay exorbitant prices to play with them and pose for photos. He does normally socialize with them this way - you can see this in his videos. Some of his cubs have also mysteriously gone missing once they became adults and were no longer cute.

His lack of transparency is also laughable. The public can never know how or where they “rescued” the animals, even the address of the “sanctuary” is kept secret. Whenever someone (be it a fan or a journalist) enquires about the animals and their wellbeing, they never get answers; sometimes he even complains in videos or comments about how these people don’t understand him and his work, or want to defame him, effectively unleashing thousands of fans on anyone who tries to disagree with his methods (which are questionable at best).

He refuses to sterilise any of his animals, claiming that they may be important for future conservation programs when:

  1. Most of the species aren’t that endangered (and big cats bred for circuses or as pets are never genetically pure anyway, so they or their offspring couldn’t be reintroduced in the wild)
  2. Most (if not all) of the species who are endangered already have reproduction programs in important and accredited zoos

This, combined with his lack of transparency, has led a lot of people to believe that he actually breeds his animals so he can always have cubs available (which he does, all year round). A good number of these cubs are never spoken of again or appear in any of the videos once they’re not babies anymore.

He also lets his (small) dogs interact with the big cats, which is a disaster waiting to happen and seriously dangerous for the dogs. He claims they like to play and it’s all safe.

The enclosures aren’t adequate for the animals and numerous associations criticised him for it. I followed him for more than a year on Facebook and the whole time he claimed that those enclosures were temporary while they built more appropriate ones. They never did it as far as I know, they look the same in the most recent videos.

I understand wanting to believe that lions and tigers and jaguars can be “basically big cats” if socialised that way, I really do. But this isn’t loving a wild, exotic animal worth of respect, it’s wanting to make it fit a mold to make a point, a point that promotes poaching and the illegal pet trade, that spread disinformation and actually hinders real conservation efforts.
