I dream of.... traveling to far away places, living by the sea, and doing something to make the world more beautiful.

Still not over the fact that I won a seat lottery for Hamilton and that the seats ended up being front row in the orchestra. It was magical and I am so glad that I got to see it, 17 year old me was squealing inside (I was a very big fan of Lin’s original performance at the White House). Luckily it’s one of those things that actually lives up to the hype and even exceeds it. There is so much hope and truth wrapped up in those majestic lyrics and performances. Hope for the future, for what we can be, for possibilities, for telling immigrant stories, etc. Simply empowering and divine to watch (or sob over, if you are like me and just cried during the last half of the show).

i don’t think anyone fully understands how iconic of a film the princess diaries truly is. everything in that film is iconic. the apartment/firehouse. the scooters as a method of transportation. “get off the grass” in 4 languages. “please don’t crush my soy nuts.” the mustang. the weird neighbor who writes poetry. the m&ms on the keyboard and the pizza. “it’s a wango?” lily’s otter backpack. the whole paolo makeover sequence. every foot pop. stop me i could go on forever the princess diaries is so iconic it’s on the same level of iconography as star wars (1977)

You know you are in a room full of young Jewish adults when everyone just absolutely looses it when the DJ plays Israeli hits like Tudo Bom. Always makes me think to myself, I am so glad these are my people. It’s moments like that when I realize my non-Jewish/Israeli friends will never quite understand that particular joy of screaming song lyrics in Hebrew while slightly tipsy. A true joy.

After over a month away, I’m back and ready to scroll through tumblr again (I guess I just can't quite you). After adventures in Israel, Denmark, and Sweden I’m back home for a little while... this trip was so insightful, and I feel so lucky that I got to spend all that time with myself. It was a real privilege to travel and spend that time the way I wanted too, not being beholden to anyone else. I spent a lot of time reading (I devoured 8 books while I was away!), checking out these cities, walking on average 10 miles a day, and eating copious amounts of yummy food. It was a good holiday. Figured it might be fun to make a small list of my favorite books I read while away and a few favorite memories/food eaten.

  • Spinning Silver and Uprooted both by Naomi Novik- What deliciously written books with thoughtful symbolism for those interested in reading into the stories more.
  • Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams- It has been described as a black British modern Bridget Jones, which is a bit apt but with perhaps more substance. Also heard a wonderful interview with the author on The High Low podcast which is worth checking out.
  • Normal People by Sally Rooney- Okay, so I didn't technically read this while on holiday, I read it on the 4th of July, but I’m including it in my favorite summer reads. The hype for this book is real and justified, as it’s absolutely a gut punch of a book.
  • Educated by Tara Westover- Woah, what a gusty memoir and an insightful look into a singular life.
  • Experiences in Sweden: Going to Sweden for the day to eat cardamom buns and spend the afternoon at an outdoor sauna, which was was magical and a highlight of my time in Europe.
  • Experiences in Denmark: Walking around Copenhagen for hours, seeing the V&A clothing exhibit Fashioned from Nature, the Louisiana Museum of Modern art, eating licorice ice cream, and the incredible beauty and kindness of the city.
  • Experiences in Israel: Eating Malabi whenever I wanted too, getting to experience Machne yehuda shuk on a weekday (not a Thursday or a Friday) when its so much quieter and nicer, reading by the beach and people watching numerous afternoons, exploring the unique history and beauty of Jewish historical embroidery, and visiting old friends. It’s always a delight to return to a place that I know so well and yet am always learning more about.

I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one but I give myself to it. I circle around God, around the primordial tower. I’ve been circling for thousands of years and I still don’t know: am I a falcon, a storm, or a great song?

Widening Circles, a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke

so proud to belong to a religion where it is legit to throw hard candy at the heads of your relatives on certain occasions

There is also a tradition to interrupt your relatives and friends with song as they’re giving a Very Serious Drasha in honor of their Bar Mitzvah/wedding/any other occasion.

A few reasons for this:

1. To save the drasha-giver from embarassment.  It’s far easier to fudge sentences when there’s constant interruptions anyway

2. To teach the drasha-giver that life is not easy - they must persevere despite the challenges

Gratitude List:

  • I love that my dad and I text during hockey games. We basically just do a live play by play commentary on the games. Sharing this hobby brings us closer together.
  • Invitations to Shabbat dinner and lunches and feeling welcomed into my new community.
  • Feeling fortunate that I have the time and luxury to spend a month in Israel this summer.
  • Reading books that expand my mind and challenge me to think deeper. Almost finished with The Art of Leaving by Ayelet Tsabari (an Israeli-Canadian who writes about her experiences as a Mizrahi women), and it is completely phenomenal.
  • Making a good cup of tea and sitting down to watch television/movies. Have been really enjoying these programs lately: Derry Girls (just started season 2), Shtisel (in the middle of season 2), Schitts Creek (the 5th season is so good!), and Unicorn Store.

Guess who is spending a month in Israel this summer??? Me!!! I honestly cannot wait. The first half will be work related but then I have 3 weeks on my own. Cannot wait to catch up with friends and to visit some of my favorite spots as well as discover new cool places.
