when i was in high school i used to write my papers thinking wow i’m just bullshitting all of this. then like a week before my senior year ended after all the grades were set, i was talking to my english teacher and told him you know i just bullshitted every paper i wrote. he told me that while i may have thought i was just pulling it all out of my ass, i genuinely knew what i was talking about and made well-supported analyses. i only thought i was bullshitting because it didn’t take much effort and it all seemed obvious to me. if you do well on your essays even though you think you’re just making it up as you go, chances are you’re not pulling it out of your ass. you’re just a genuinely talented analyst, even if the analysis that you’re making comes from a subconscious understanding of the material rather than a conscious effort to study it. give yourself some credit.

Quirk counseling is a thing the story brings up but i doubt it’s an one-on-one intensive therapy dedicated to just an individual kid. The manga states that it’s a general thing all kids receive in elementary school:

and that it’s a class’ sole teacher’s responsibility towards the dozens of her students:

She acknowledges that counseling isn’t always enough - but it seems the solution is to hope some Hero trainees senpai can connect with the kids through play. Not exactly in-depth, 100% reliable psychotherapy.

Quirk counseling also seems to continue into middle school, and there’s even some basic quirk training, as seen in Tamaki’s flashbacks.

But note that the students are taught to consider their quirks as being something to be ‘useful to society’. That is a good concept; but unfortunately that also implies negative things about quirks that aren’t useful.

Also note that the students aren’t getting individualized attention specific to their quirk. It’s like any other gym class: the kids aren’t getting a personal trainer, they’re just given generalized testing. A student who does have trouble with their quirk - like Togata above - is simply told to ‘stop messing around’ and ‘you’re clumsy at control’. That’s not help or solution; that’s just a teacher making a (flawed, biased) observation - maybe even a judgmental grade - before moving on to the next student.

As Curious said, quirk counseling is just another school program designed to assimilate children into societal norms and standards. It’s not there to teach acceptance or specific control.

She says it “ends up emphasizing the inherent differences between us all,” and it tracks. If you fit the standard, good for you. If you don’t fit the standards, maybe it’s because you’re messing around, you’re clumsy, you’re not trying hard enough. For someone who really does struggle with their quirk, whether because it’s a matter of biological compulsion or not coming naturally or needing more intense focus or whatever, quirk counseling might very well tell them they’re abnormal - and without any help offered.

Features of conversation, facial expressions and body language AFO-Shigaraki

By examining some of the points in chapter 295, which left a lot of questions behind it, I was able to find something interesting. Namely - from the point of view of the DFO.

Therefore, we put on foil hats and watch!

As I wrote earlier, Afo repeated his words to Midoriya Izuku twice, "let's meet again - 「また会おう」 (mata a ou)" This is highly atypical for such an arch-villain character. He never repeated his words to anyone in the plot. So I dug into psychology and found the answer to my question.

In speech, repetition is undoubtedly used to convey emotional information. The phenomenon of repetition takes place at all language levels: at the phonetic level - repetition of sounds or combinations; at the morphological level, the repetition of morphemes; at the lexical level - repetition of words; at the semantic level - repetition of values; at the syntactic level, the repetition of phrases and sentences. The phenomenon of repetition in speech is used to convey emotional information. The location of the initial phrase and repeat plays a huge role in this. That is, the Beginning or the End. Plus, the very phenomenon of repeating a phrase - speaks of its significance and immediate interest.

Afo ended his conversation with Izuku by repeating "Let's meet again."

This conveys his emotion, because in his speech there were neither exclamations nor mockery, but only regret: "This body needs to be refined, so let's meet later." There is a real regret here that they don't have time to talk.

If judge so, then no matter how Afo does not follow his speech, he still unintentionally makes stupid mistakes. In Chapter 287, he too loudly ignored First's question about Izuku, immediately shifting the topic of conversation to the other side. In chapter 116, Afo ignored the words of All Might about Izuku's fate, without answering anything (but at the end of chapter 115, he remembered that the second semester had now begun at the Academy).

Changing the topic of conversation and openly ignoring the question - this further shows the emotional interest of a person in the object of the question.

Next there will be several interesting points, one of which drew attention to @marunalu . Thank you for your keen eye! This helped me see something else interesting.

1.

The shaking of the hand, the bleeding stigma is a clear containment of the power of the quirk, which caused the trauma due to the forced restriction. + Afo-Shigaraki's hand is turned to the side. Not directly at Izuku. Someone definitely didn't want to hurt the boy even more.

2.

This frame is very strange. The face is completely covered, expressions cannot be read. But. Izuku immediately exclaimed, "Shi...garaki...!!" - if this is really Afo's real last name, then it could awaken something in him. Or it just reminded, for example, a brother, who may have tried to stop him one day, and Afo himself threw him away just like Izuku.

3.

Notice the hand hanging in the air and relaxed. And on the skewed shoulders. The general expression can be interpreted as uncertainty and indecision; Afo doesn't know if he made the right decision or not.

4.

And this is a very interesting point. An expression of humility and a certain sadness is read here. There are relaxed eyelids and eyebrows. And there is a tilt of the head slightly downward. We weren't shown his mouth, so we don't know if Afo is smiling or not. However, all this already says a lot.

5.

And all this time Afo looks at Izuku, and he continues to look after him until the last, while the image of the child can be seen. Although he could turn away, and this would show his disinterest in a boy, as if "tough guys are not looking at the explosion." But no! He looks! He sees!

Conclusion:

1) Afo does not want to harm the child even more.

2) Afo may be catching flashbacks with his brother.

3) Afo is not sure and indecisive in his actions. He doesn't know what to do at this moment, because he probably didn't think that this would happen. Or he thought, but hoped that everything would not come to this. There is obvious confusion here.

4) He is sad. He is in despondency and humility that everything happened this way. It can be seen that he did not want to lead to this. And he probably didn't want the boy here at all. Regret. He looks after him.

5) Words spoken in chapter 295. I am more than sure that they will sound thoughtful, quiet and ... even a little gentle, warm, despite the insult "worthless". As a "pathetic brother", yes.

6) In the battle "Afo-Shiga vs Izuku"(chapter 285) - he was trying to capture him, tie, catch the boy. And he definitely saw and heard the rushing Bakugou - he hardly lost all the experience of past battles. At the last moment, he pierced him, knowing and understanding that such a sacrifice Izuku would definitely appreciate and go mad, which means he would make a mistake. But with other kids like Nejire and Shouto - he didn't stand on ceremony. He didn’t stand on ceremony, but he didn’t do anything special either, he mostly avoided. Like midges. And there Machia came running, giving him a break.

Putting it all together, we can definitely see that no matter how Afo tries to hide his interest in the boy, he still makes mistakes. He is hesitant to make a decision regarding Izuku. He tries not to talk about him. Only in this chapter 295 did he allow himself to enter into dialogue with him, directly addressing Midoriya Izuku. And it will definitely have consequences.

The way bnha is making dabi out to be some crazy brother-killing lunatic as if he isn’t completely right about endeavor. Is the narrative REALLY trying to ignore what endeavor has done and say “well it’s okay because dabi is worse”??? Bnha is ruining dabi and shouto. Post reveal touya is so out of character just for the sake of making him crazy and evil and “wrong”. And horikoshi is shoving Shouto into the role of ”the ideal victim” ie. a victim who plays nice and shuts up and forgives. And I’m so angry for both of them and all the abuse survivors reading this crap because it is so so dirty

OH NO YOU DON'T

I know that "Endeavor stan= bad person" logic

i'm Acker, insult me, talk crap about me but i'm just gonna say it here out and loud:

I LOVE ENJI'S CHARACTER because of his flaws, because he went from being a total piece of trash to a man that is triying to redeem himslef, he recognized his bad actions, and tries to become a better person no matter what, if he's forgiven or not and that.....THAT IS SOMETHING ADMIRABLE

I can relate to him to a spiritual level

ENJI TODOROKI IS A GOOD MAN WHO TOOK THE WRONG CHOICES

In conclussion i'm a proud Endeavor Stan

let’s talk unreliability real quick: bnha 291

so in light of recent bnha events, i wanted to write up a real quick thing on unreliable narrators based on some things i’ve seen going around and some stuff from my own experience based on my work with unreliability.

just because someone says something in canon story, doesn’t actual mean that’s exactly how things are. there’s some important factors that play into how much you can trust information from a character.

some of the main ones being:

  • how old were they?
  • what circumstances were they in?
  • could they be reliably asked to remember this event?
  • how much information were they privy too and how much are they assuming?
  • do they have a reason to lie?

let’s look at shouto for example:

This is an Endeavor fan safe space~ ( as much as I love Endeavor we can all agree he has majorly FUCKED UP and there’s a lot of work to be done there. You can LIKE a character, but not condone their actions, it’s really that simple. You would not akin a villain stan to being someone who condones the actions of a real life mass murderer, so don’t do the same for us.)

It is often hard for people to separate their feelings from real life occurrences and situations that mirror that in their favorite media and that is completely valid. But this can sometimes come across aggressive and I will tell you now, there is little you can do to change a persons mind. They are valid to feel the way they do especially if the subject hits too close to home. However, it is not okay to attack other people who don’t have the same experience and belittle or call them horrible things for liking a character in fiction.

Do yourself a favor, don’t interact. Blocking is such a powerful tool, use it. It costs zero dollars to hit that block button and relieve your headache. scrolling through your fav tag and see something you don’t like? BLOCK. The internet is vast and wide and you will not miss a single thing removing that person from your freetime to enjoy what you love.  ❤

Anonymous asked:

Oooo, what do the light novels say/show about Shinsou??

here’s the chapter if you want to read it for yourself but here’s some points that i found particularly interesting:

-a lot of this chapter is ‘shinsou feels guilty for things he shouldn’t’. one of the biggest things he feels guilty about is his transfer to the hero course--which since this is during the cultural festival, was not yet set in stone. he’s really upset by the idea of ‘lying’ (he’s not actually lying, he’s just very anxious) to his new classmates and he’s extremely worried that they’ll hate him for transferring to the hero course. he’s described as “plagued by doubts and unease” regarding himself and his relationship to others.

-his feelings of guilt and anxiety are described as “dark thoughts” and the narration gives off the feeling that this is incredibly common for him and that shinsou spends a lot of time in his head thinking about this stuff

-similar to above, one of the most interesting things in this chapter is the fact that it explicitly says that no one is angry at shinsou for the things he did in the sports festival. all the class A students including ojiro (who is specifically mentioned with this) do not hold it against him because they realize that shinsou was playing by the rules and doing the same things the rest of them were. however there is an exception to this, and that’s actually shinsou himself. he feels guilty about it and there’s a portion of his narration where he says that he actually wishes that they were angry at him.

-for a kid whos “not there to make friends” shinsou is very concerned about how people feel about him.

-there’s a point in the beginning of the chapter where shinsou stares up at the sky and has a moment of introspection that’s very, very reminiscent of young aizawa in vigilantes. it’s so reminiscent of that scene where aizawa stares out at the sky from the rooftop that the official translator for bnha (including the light novels) pointed it out on twitter after he translated this scene.

-similar to above, shinsou is described as having a “lack of confidence” and his doubts about entering the hero course are expanded upon. again, it’s all extremely similar to young aizawa and that’s pretty clearly the parallel that’s supposed to be drawn here

-shinsou’s very certain that he’s more likely to be placed in class A due to aizawa’s involvement with his training than class B.

-shinsou has been too well behaved with aizawa to ever earn a scolding from him but when he sees a bunch of class A kids impersonating an angry aizawa, he actually feels jealous that they have.

-he genuinely thinks mineta should be expelled for sexual harassment.

-aizawa’s feelings towards shinsou are described as “having an affinity for him”.

-there’s this entire scene in the chapter where shinsou comes across class A’s band practicing and he literally just stands in the hallway and stares at them in genuine fucking confusion about how they’re so friendly and warm with each other. my favorite part of this is that this is where hori chose to do the illustration for the chapter and shinsou’s face as he just. stares. at these kids being friends is genuinely the funniest thing

-shinsou literally just studies all weekend and does not understand doing anything different, like hanging out with friends. it’s so weird to him that he can’t actually imagine it. he doesn’t think that kids who do hang out with friends on the weekends are bad students or anything, he just does not understand it

-aizawa has been taking a lot of days off to be at the hospital with eri, but he goes out of his way to find shinsou and check in with him about training and school. they also have an... interesting? slightly bizarre in a way only shinsou and aizawa can achieve? conversation about cats

-shinsou was actually the inspiration for aizawa’s cat outfit for eri. in the cat conversation aizawa suddenly has an idea and is like “wait. do little girls like cats too?” and then basically runs off and leaves shinsou dumbfounded behind

-finally, shinsou’s classmates know about shinsou’s upcoming transfer, but he doesn’t know that they do. he seems to think that they don’t like him, when the opposite is actually true--the gen ed students see shinsou as the pride of their class and are actually planning a surprise party for him when he transfers
